This book is not quite the drek of it's title, but it's not a great guide to impolite Yiddish, and the author is not emmes. Her explanations are not always on themark and when you are using another language to be insulting, it's very important to know the exact meaning and power of the words you are using.You could read Wex's Just say Nu or go back to the source The Joys of Yiddish.My bubbe was dead, my zaide would not teach me these words, but my late mother and her friends used these words. This book does not give you a warm feeling and since its explanations are sometimes wrong, I would not use it as a guide; you could get in trouble.

I had hoped for something more than this skinny, undersized volume. to spin an old gag, "Life is a drek sandwich. Sometimes you get more bread... sometimes you get more drek." Not too much drek in this sandwich. For instance I wanted a definition of "Yutz." I had to go to Google to find it. And a couple of other terms that have more than one meaning left those alternatives unlisted.But it's better than no sandwich at all. And I found other volumes I might invesetigate later, if I find myself in need of such diversity.In brief, I got the Drek I paid for, but not much else.

Admittedly I know nothing of Yiddish, so I can't judge it technically, but I can say that this book is a lot of fun. It's a very colorful language and the words are grouped by subject, making it really easy to pick out a few to use. My main goal is to interest my kids in the language and picking out and using fun words is a great way to do it.

If you grew up with Yiddish speaking relatives, this is great. Even if you didn't it's still hysterical.Yiddish is a really funny language. For those of you not familiar with it, it is a hodge-podge of Hebrew and German. It was a language that united Jews by giving them a common language in Europe and Russia.A lot of the vernacular, expressions, words, etc. have made it into the American style of English language.I laughed my rear end off with this one.

The book brought back memories of my parents!

I have not had time to read this book, but I am sure when I do, it will be a good one to add to my library.

A slightly better graduate text is that by Pathria which is in its second edition. It is fairly clear that Greiner has borrowed heavily from Pathria's approach. Greiner's book is more comfortable to look at and read though.Greiner does not include a single reference in this book. I would like to point out that if this were an article submitted to a scientific journal, it would be rejected out of hand for this egregious lack of attribution. This is particularly bothersome with regard to comparing experiment with theory. Mr. Bromley, who wrote the preface, states that these comparisons are a plus for the book. While true, this is hardly unique. Every stat mech book I have quotes experimental results, but the others also cite the reference to the original work. This gives students (and teachers) the ability to look at the experimental work and to get the data for themselves, and it gives credit to those who did the work.What could have been a much better text is marred by too many typos and references to incorrect equation numbers. As well, I find that some "derivations", again contrary to a statement by Bromley, are of the "it can be seen that" variety, which is odd in a text which does go into some detail on many things, e.g. the derivation of the partition function for an ideal gas in the microcanonical ensemble. An example of a non-derivation is given in the discussion that follows eqn 7.67 which arbitrarily splits the velocity distribution into 3 multiplicative pieces. Since the big new thing for a student in this subject is the use of probability, it would have been much more appropriate to find the one-dimensional velocity distribution by integrating the 3d distribution over two of the components. There are other places in the book where the author fails to use this approach. Students find this confusing, I find it inconsistent. As it stands, the formula is correct, but there is not even a hint that it should be derived or questioned.I found the discussion of the purely classical derivation, the semiclassical derivation, and the quantum derivation of various quantities such as the IG partition function to be a bit confusing at times particularly when the Gibbs factor and the quantum correction h^3N were involved, perhaps it is just me. I would find it better if each derivation were given separately with a summary at the end. This would be more helpful, since some of the later derivations, e.g. Maxwell-Boltzmann are essentially classical in nature and could be arrived at from any of the formulas.On the other hand I found Chapter 12 on the Grand Canonical Ensemble to be excellent, especially the discussion of the distribution of occupation numbers on p. 308ff, an important topic that is not often discussed in Stat Mech books.All in all, though, this would be good book with a little more care and with an appropriate reference list. If you get it, pay attention as you read it.

Greiner does it again! The authors do an excellent job of setting up the necessary math and then comprehensively going over the concepts with you. There is a lot of concepts in this text that are given at an introductory to statistical mechanics level for those who did not have an undergraduate course in statistical mechanics. It's relatively low level but it really helps you get the basics and it's very readable.

It seems like a pretty good textbook. I have read a bunch of chapters and found above-average insight and relevant examples that have been good at clearing up confusion. Concepts are clearly explained. What the student may like are the large number of worked examples. This is invaluable to have when you learn statistical mechanics for the first time. Most of Greiner's books are of a very high pedagogical value. True, there may be similarities with other texts, but hey, it must be difficult to present the same old classical material in a different manner.Just a minor note: his discussion of exact differentials on pp.26-27 is wrong. He claims that curl F = 0 is a necessary and sufficient condition for f to be exact. It is a necessary condition, but not sufficient. It is not enough to show that curl F=0. All this shows is that the form is "close" (not exact). To prove that it is exact is a much more difficult task: one must prove that a potential function exists. This topic is covered in many elementary books on differential geometry..

I didn't end up using this text as a reference as much as I anticipated I would. I wasn't a huge fan of the structure or explanation, but I will be keeping it as a reference anyway.

It would be wrong to give it a five star rating, since it has too many elementary misgivings: There are inconsistencies in the notation, it's plagued with typos, and it doesn't give a list of additional problems, and references. On the other hand, its virtues highly compensate them. The book is very easy to read in general, provides a wide collection of examples and solved problems, and is an excellent introduction to statistical mechanics.

As the book says, it is written for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. I really doubt that it is appropriate for students who first expose themselves with statistical mechanics, even as a reference. This is because the book assumes certain familiarity with quantum mechanics and exposures to various applications like solid state physics and high energy physics.There are several things that I like about this book. It starts with thermodynamics. Most statistical physics books focus only on statistical mechanics. I think it is important to see the linkage with thermodynamics for a physics student. Also, the book discusses quantum statistical mechanics formally using density matrix. The motivation and explanation of density matrix are pretty well done. This book serves as a great follow-up course for undergraduate statistical mechanics in my opinion. And I like the treatment of quantum statistics using canonical ensemble and then switch to the grand canonical ensemble. Such treatment provides a lot of insight, which is usually not well presented in other textbooks.I rate this book 4 stars because I am annoyed by it at the same time. As other people have noted, there are numerous typos. I think that the translation from German to English is problematic. Very often, I feel that the English is not exactly what it really means. Finally, the book provides a lot of so-called examples. But does it? Such examples are discussed as part of the main text in other textbooks. For instance, the derivation of the Planck radiation formula spans like 5 pages and it is called an example. The last chapter is on the Ising model. Why is the derivation of the 1D Ising model an example? While I appreciate a good collection of examples, the examples in this book are not for real, in my opinion.

I should change my name to Just Some Dad.Call me what you will but these stories send the wrong message to a 4yo or any young impressionable child.If you want to share the fun and excitement of breaking rules, stealing, submission, sneaking, lying and the sort, this is the one for you. Go ahead and teach your daughter that happiness is finding a man and getting married at 16.Some of the animation in this book literally disturbs my child. I am not a fan.These 'classics' (archaic ways of thinking) once read with my parent eyes are simply not the direction I want my child to go. Maybe if we would all focus on delivering messages of loving, helping, hard working, honest behavior the future can be brighter. That is a description of a book I want my 4 yo to read. Not this garbage.

I have a 4 year old so I bought this Collection Of Stories for 4 year old's and it is perfect for her age group! The stories that are included are; The Ugly Duckling, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess and the Pea, The Little Red Hen, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Elves and The Shoemaker, The Big Ship Sails, Five Little Speckled Frogs, Sing a Song of Sixpence, There was a Crooked Man, Eeny, Meeny, and Old Mother Hubbard. Each story is colorful illustrated to keep little ones attention. I love how all of these stories are included in one book because it means there are not many books laying around to get lost.I recommend this story book to anyone who has little ones, not just 4 year old's. It is a great book that has many stories in one book.

This is for my Granddaughter's 4th birthday. The stories are some of the old standbys. The book is of very nice quality, cute pictures, and stories just right for bedtime. I cannot wait to share it with her.

Got this for my 4 year old grandson. He wasn't thrilled when he first saw it - would rather play with his toys - but he does like to have it read to him at bedtime. It re-enforces that he's 4 years old and makes him feel special.

Love the concept of this book. My daughter feels special because it is "just for" her age! The stories are classic fairy tales and poems, and I look forward to reading this to her several times a week. Also, the book is very well made. I can't wait to buy the one for when she turns 5!
