Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut (Denene Millner Books)

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Rhythmic text describes the feeling of a young African American boy as he gets a "fresh cut" and how a trip to the barbershop changes the way he feels about the world and in turn how the world perceives him. He might just "smash that geography exam" or "rearrange the principal's honor roll" and, of course, the cute girl in class won't be able to keep her eyes off of him. The protagonist spends time looking at black men in chairs next to him and creating vivid stories about their lives: "the dude to the left of you with a faux-hawk…looks presidential…maybe he's the CEO of a tech company." Oil paintings illustrate the intricacies of the haircuts, details in the characters' faces, along with the sense of well-being that is conveyed along the way. While a trip the barbershop is the main story line, the themes of confidence-building, self-esteem, and joy of young black boys are the important takeaways, and the illustrations jump off the page and invite readers to share in the experience. VERDICT A super fun read-aloud, this title is a recommended purchase for all picture book collections.—Kristen Todd-Wurm, Middle Country Public Library, NY

Praise for Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut:“The swagger is on a million. The sauce is drippin’. . . . This book oozes with black cool and timely, much-needed black joy, using the unique and expansive experience of the barbershop to remind young boys that their inner lives have always mattered there. One of the best reads for young black boys in years, it should be in every library, media center, and, yes, barbershop.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review “With language so hot you expect the words to ignite the page, Derrick Barnes endows the boy at this book’s center with flash, strut, pizzazz and the pure unregulated pride of knowing you look like a million bucks. Accompanied by layered paintings that bounce back the beat of the words like the sweetest of jazz riffs, here’s an ode to looking good and feeling great.” —Betsy Bird, NPR Book Concierge: Best Books of 2017 “Crown captures that extra bounce in your step as confidence crackles from the top of your freshly-shorn head down through your feet. With a flawless delivery, Barnes and James’ book is a celebration of self-esteem and a thoughtful nod to the importance of stepping into the world with a touch of swagger.” —The Huffington Post: Best Picture Books of 2017 “It’s not just a pleasure to read, it also does something important, and that is to show up and show out for black kids, black culture and black language. It’s about that time honored tradition for black folks of sitting in the chair at the barbershop, and the power of being seen as a black boy beyond stereotype out here in America. . . . Hook yourself up with this sweet and mighty book, both for you and your kids.” —Rebecca Carroll, Los Angeles Times Top Books of 2017 “Barnes’ language affirms the sacredness of the fresh-cut experience, which allows young black men to feel like kings.” —The Root “A powerfully moving tribute to barbershop culture . . . . Pride, confidence, and joy radiate from the pages, both in the black and brown faces of men, women, boys, and girls featured in Barnes’s majestic paintings, and in writing that celebrates human worth with every syllable.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Themes of confidence-building, self-esteem, and joy of young black boys are the important takeaways, and the illustrations jump off the page and invite readers to share in the experience. A super fun read-aloud, this title is a recommended purchase for all picture book collections.” —School Library Journal, starred review “Alternately precise, metaphorical, and culturally specific, Barnes’s descriptions make each page a serendipity. . . . A not-to-be-missed portrayal of the beauty of black boyhood.” —Horn Book Magazine, starred review “The interchange between the art and the words lights the very pages on fire. . . A long overdue title we couldn't have waited another minute for.” —School Library Journal's A Fuse #8 Production Blog “Barnes mixes fresh and sharp lines with an integral part of the African American experience: maintaining one’s hair. Illustrator James deftly uses bright colors . . . and a colorful galaxy complements Barnes’ words well. The strong voice will resonate with readers, soothe any young child scared of their first cut, and give a boost of confidence to the seasoned pros.” —Booklist “In this homage to Black barbershops, the author perfectly captures the meaning of this rite of passage for Black boys. And breathtaking visuals by the infinitely creative Gordon C. James match the energetic text. If the first three tomes are any indication, Denene Millner Books will continue to highlight the best talent and reads for an audience who truly deserves both.” —Essence “Magnificent. . . . Let this young man’s strut, pizzazz, and pride show you what happens when you get a truly great haircut.” —Evanston Public Library “A top-notch paean to pride, community, and joy.” —Denver Public Library Best & Brightest Books of 2017 “I read this book three times, in quick succession, just so I could appreciate its pictures again and again.”—Houston Style Magazine “Crown is a book you should be looking for.” —The Washington Informer “To say that Derrick Barnes and Gordon C. James knocked their first picture book out of the ballpark would be an understatement about a book with very little that is understated about it.” —KirkusReviews.com “Rhythmic, vibrant words plus bold, oil painting illustrations give this barbershop experience a swagger of its own.” —Imagination Soup “The perfect gift for all the fly young black boys in your life.” —Blavity.com “A burst of energy that makes you so happy it exists.” —Mr. Brian’s Picture Book Picks “A brilliant blend of text and illustration.” —Unpacking Picture Book Power “A beautifully written and illustrated tribute to little black and brown boys.” —Growing Book by Book “A book that begs to be read aloud. It begs to be shared and shared and shared.” —Abby the Librarian

#10,338 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

You ever wonder if a book is too good to be true? Publishers are sneaky little devils. They know just how to lure in an unsuspecting reader. Here’s an example: Let’s say you have a picture book on your hands that’s mediocre in some way. At the same time, you know how many people purchase books based on book covers alone. So really, all you have to do is to take the most interesting image in your book and put it on the cover. Problem solved! In fact, so many publishers do this (or turn the image into a poster/bookmark/tote bag) that the people that work regularly in the field of children’s literature get a little jaded. Now sure, the cover of Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut looked awesome, but this wasn’t my first time at the rodeo. I was trepidatious. I knew that there was a good chance that I’d open the book and find so-so art, good intentions, and underwhelming writing. So I opened that darn book and instead what I got was this electric jolt of vitality, pride, strut, and joie de vivre. This isn’t a book for kids. This is a friggin’ pamphlet on how to seize onto what makes you feel good about yourself and use it to guide your life. I didn’t initially know who author Derrick Barnes or illustrator Gordon C. James were, but if this is the kind of firepower they’re capable of then they better have a lot more ammo in their arsenal. This is a book that desperately needs to be on every library and bookstore shelf in the country.“You come in as a lump of clay, a blank canvas, a slab of marble. But when my man is done with you, they’ll want to post you up in a museum! That my word.” But not the only word on the matter. From the minute a young black kid enters the barbershop by himself he finds himself given the full treatment. The cape, the cool shaving cream on the forehead, and the flawless line that “frames your swagger.” The kid imagines everything that’ll happen to him with this haircut. Tests aced. Girls noticing him. All the people in the shop applauding him when it’s done. Sitting next to men getting their own hair done, he imagines who they are in their own lives. He imagines who he’ll be in his own life. And when all is said and done and the barber has been tipped, he steps outside feeling “Magnificent. Flawless. Like royalty. Hello, world . . .”Imagine if Muhammad Ali were to write a picture book but instead of using his verbal linguistics on his own magnificence he turned those words towards the child reader. I mean, I don’t even know who to really compare author Derrick Barnes to with this book. Lin-Manuel Miranda couldn’t do it better. Barnes isn’t new to this game. You might be familiar with his Ruby and the Booker Boys series or his middle school book We Could Be Brothers. I’m a little ashamed to admit that the man’s work is entirely new to me. I know this because no human being could read the words on this pages and not feel how they pop off the page like little spitting fireworks. This guy is memorable. Listen to the care and attention he pours into describing the other fellows at the barbershop getting their hair done. “There’s a dude to the left of you with a faux-hawk, deep part, skin fade. He looks presidential. Maybe he’s the CEO of a tech company that manufactures cool. He’s a boss. That’s how important he looks. Dude to the right of you looks majestic. There are thousands of black angels waiting to guide and protect him as soon as he steps a foot out that door. That’s how important he looks.” I have rarely had the experience of feeling like I wasn’t cool enough to read a picture book aloud, but this book gets me close, man. It gets me close. But it’s not just how it says what it says but what it says. In his highly necessary Author’s Note in the back (seriously, if you read this book and skip the “Note From the Author” then you’ve just done yourself a terrible disservice) Mr. Barnes gives a little credit to his own childhood barber, working in a reference to Big Daddy Kane while he’s there. But the meat of the matter comes when he talks about what he hopes to do with this book. As he says of getting your hair cut, “It’s how we develop swagger, and when we begin to care about how we present ourselves to the world It’s also the time when most of us become privy to the conversations and company of hardworking black men from all walks of life.” Then, later, key, he writes, “And really, other than the church, the experience of getting a haircut is pretty much the only place in the black community where a black boy is ‘tended to’ – treated like royalty.” The hammer hits the nail hard with that line. I’ve written a bit about how, for all that we demand more diverse books for kids, middle grade novels starring black boys are still shockingly low (in 2017 we’re up to twelve, a number that lingers somewhere between sad and shameful). Picture books do slightly better but if you’re looking for something to bump up a boy’s self-esteem, good luck with all that. They’re out there, but they’re usually along the lines of The Adventures of Sparrowboy or something equally fantastical. The difference here is that Mr. Barnes is not afraid to plant himself in front of you and give you the 411 on exactly how awesome a boy feels after a fresh cut. This book is bold as brass and makes no bones about its intent. There’s something incredibly alluring about that. I mean, look at that kid on the cover. Have you ever seen a boy like him feeling that good about himself on a picture book cover before? You. Have. Not.Of course we wouldn’t even have that cover without Gordon C. James. A fine artist by trade, it looks as if he might have illustrated one or two of Patricia McKissack’s Scraps of Time books about a decade ago. Now a picture book artist can illustrate a book so well that it renders mediocre text invisible, but such books tend to fade from memories quickly. In Crown Mr. James has words worthy of pairing with his skill. Thick paints adorn each page. You see those little crowns on the cover? Raise your hands if you thought of Basquiat when you saw those. Not that Mr. James is emulating Basquiat’s style or anything. Instead, he’s doing about thirty things all at once. His hero, the boy getting the haircut, needs to show his strutting self in a variety of different ways. James can’t just have him replicate the same cool-eyed look, and that’s a tricky challenge for any illustrator. Due to his style, he works with reality. There’s nothing cartoonish about what he’s doing here, but because the words demand a kind of ultra-excellence he also can’t make his art static and staid. So you’ll get a floating head in the cosmos or a starburst behind two award ribbons, even as the book makes it incredibly clear that you seeing all this through the filter of the boy’s imagination. You aren’t just getting his pride from the words but from how he sees himself and others. Be sure you notice that last two-page spread where you have to tip the book horizontally. The artist has made it clear that the last picture in this book shouldn't merely be an illustration, but a portrait. A very fitting choice. A good picture book is like a conversation between the author and the artist. This book isn’t just a mere conversation though. It’s more like jazz. What Barnes drops, James picks up, and the interchange between the art and the words lights the very pages on fire. Now I’m a white, female, 39-year-old librarian living in the Midwest. I have never been in a barbershop of any kind, so I’m taking a lot of stuff on faith here. These guys know what they’re talking about and I’m just following behind watching how they tell it. Some professional reviews have said that this is a great book for black boys to read and that’s dead right, but let’s not go thinking that kids of every stripe wouldn’t also find it amazing. They may not get all the references or understand everything that’s going on but when you read something this lyrical and visually splendid, the art trumps personal experience.So. Here’s the plan. First off, we’re going to make everyone with eyeballs or ears read or hear this book. Next, we bring back in print (possibly with new art) Mr. Barnes’ other books for kids. I’m talking about books with titles like Stop, Drop and Chill and Low-Down Bad-Day Blues. Next, we hire Mr. James to illustrate everything. Nursery rhymes, nonfiction picture book biographies, graphic novels, easy books, you name it. The more work we give him, the better. Then we beg both of them to make a couple more books. You think you can get away with doing one book about a kid getting a haircut and leave it at that? There is a LOT more work out there to be done, and I’m pretty sure we just located the two guys that can do it. No pressure, fellas, but to be honest you kind of brought it on yourselves when you made this magnificent book. Best of all, it gets better every time you read it. A long overdue title we couldn’t have waited another minute for.For ages 4 and up.

I have seven year old twin great-grandsons that love to be read to. I stumbled upon this book looking for books that would give them insights into our blackness. This book captured my heart. I raised six sons and have five grandsons and four great-grandsons. Each one will read or have this book. I also intend to purchase this book and give a copy to each of their barber shops. I am that impressed with this beautiful book!

So happy I purchased this book. It’s truly an investment. I’m confident that this book, it’s message and images will have a positive impact on my boys. It was a great bedtime read, my 6 year old especially liked this. I also liked the authors note. The context gave my an appreciation for the barber and the importance of that experience for our boys.

Fresh Cut captures that magical feeling and sense of pride we all have after a trip to the Barber. My entire family loved this book- the writing was fresh poetry, and the illustrations were just amazing. My 2yo daughter would not let me turn the pages; every time we read it together she points to her favorites, finding something new and interesting each time. It held my 8yo boy's attention when I'm sure he'd rather be on his playstation! I even got him to read it to my youngest. Do your family a favor and pick this one up- it's filled with such a positive message of pride and accomplishment, and the artwork is simply beautiful! Derek and Gordon did an amazing job with this!!

This book oozes affirmation, pride, and confidence into anyone that reads it! The accompanying illustrations are magnificent works of art!

This is a definite must have for any collection. I read this to my 6 and 9 year and they loved it. As for myself I absolutely loooovvveeee this book!! First of all the images are absolutely breathtaking. It is so refreshing to see such a beautiful array of brown and black people captured so eloquently. The mixtures of of red and pink hues in the faces are just perfect. Secondly, the story itself flows so gracefully, almost like poetic form. And lastly, the way story captured that confidence and pride that needs to be instilled in all of our young men was the best part. This story needs to be in all of our homes and schools and not just for people of color. It's a really wonderful book.

I usually shy away from books with 5 star ratings but this one stood out. The boy on the front cover looked confident. When my son had an issue at school with some other kid, I knew I could wait any longer. As soon as I started reading, I knew he lived it. He’s 8 and plays football but LOVES getting his haircut. The only thing I didn’t like was some of the artwork (oil painting look) because it was distracting but I’m glad that it’s not hard at all to see the writing through the artwork.

Gorgeous, Empowering, Inspiring. This book, with its stunning illustrations, and powerful message about the strength of community, is exactly the kind of representation needed in kidlit. I can't wait to share this one with my students, especially the boys showing off their fresh picture day haircuts to me last week! This book is full of #blackboyjoy, and that's exactly why it's a must-have, must-share picture book. Don't miss the author's note explaining the inspiration for the book, and the importance of the message behind it.*This is the second Denene Millner Books picture book I have loved - I can't wait to read more from this new imprint.

The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea, by Sebastian Junger

Amazon.com Review

Meteorologists called the storm that hit North America's eastern seaboard in October 1991 a "perfect storm" because of the rare combination of factors that created it. For everyone else, it was perfect hell. In The Perfect Storm, author Sebastian Junger conjures for the reader the meteorological conditions that created the "storm of the century" and the impact the storm had on many of the people caught in it. Chief among these are the six crew members of the swordfish boat the Andrea Gail, all of whom were lost 500 miles from home beneath roiling seas and high waves. Working from published material, radio dialogues, eyewitness accounts, and the experiences of people who have survived similar events, Junger attempts to re-create the last moments of the Andrea Gail as well as the perilous high-seas rescues of other victims of the storm. Like a Greek drama, The Perfect Storm builds slowly and inexorably to its tragic climax. The book weaves the history of the fishing industry and the science of predicting storms into the quotidian lives of those aboard the Andrea Gail and of others who would soon find themselves in the fury of the storm. Junger does a remarkable job of explaining a convergence of meteorological and human events in terms that make them both comprehensible and unforgettable.

I saw the movie years ago and it was very impactful. My husband and I recently returned from a vacation to Gloucester, MA and it was our first visit since the huge storm in October of 1991. We had spent quite a few vacations in that area in the late 1980s and we stayed in the same place this time that we had way back then. The inn had pictures taken in the aftermath of the storm which just heightened my interest in the storm so I decided to read the book. While the book and the movie differ (from little things like The Crow's Nest doesn't back up to the harbor to large things like the movie's speculation of what went on on-board the Andrea Gail), if you enjoy one of them you will enjoy the other. I watched the movie again shortly after finishing the book just for comparison. For anyone who enjoys non-fiction books about people facing tremendous odds against nature such as climbing the huge mountains such as Everest or through-walking the Appalachian Trial, this would be a good book for you to try. As in most situations like this, each individual decision isn't necessarily bad or wrong, but when taken as a whole the results can be catastrophic. It also gives the reader a better understanding of the lives of the commercial fisherman on the eastern seaboard. While it is often romanticized, it is actually a very hard life with lots of grueling work that contains a lot of danger for both life and limb.I enjoyed the book tremendously and I am sure I will re-read it in the future. Even my husband (who isn't a big reader) found himself fascinated with it.

This is the movie story but it's not the movie story. This is so much more than the film. Sebastian Junger did his research, going back into history about both the fishing industry and the storms of the region, just to provide context to the story of the Halloween storm. He even worked in the area (though not in fishing) for a time in order to be accepted enough by the local people that they would talk with him about fishing, fishermen, and the Andrea Gail. I found it fascinating. And if you think the movie exaggerated things, go read about Ernie Hazard, the Fair Wind, and pitch-poling.

Sebastian Junger’s book A Perfect Storm replays the Andrea Gail’s demise during an epic storm off the East Coast in the early ‘90s. The wonder of his writing stems from his ability to take the readers on their harrowing ride using facts from everything else that happened to other doomed ships and sailors during the same storm. You know from the beginning that the Andrea Gail’s crew does not survive, but he does a terrific report revealing how dangerous life (and, sadly, death) at sea can be.

The Andrea Gail and the events that took place in October of 1991 are brought to bear on the reader by delving into the personal lives of the men who sailed upon her. The reader is thrust into the very essence of an industry that supportes fishing under harsh and sometimes deadly environment."The Perect Storm" details such a time and goes to the very heart of those who were left behind as well as giving us new respect for those lost in the storm tossed waters.True, the book does mix past tense with present and it does take you on a journey, spinning you from time and place while developing the story. However, it presents the facts and gives the reader a chance to understand the life of a sword boat captain and his crew.Junger has given the reader a glimpse into the lives of men who were doing their daily job, yet done in the face of danger. You will come away with a new found appreciation for these men and those that follow suit. I dare say you will not look upon a menu and see swordfish without reflecting upon the printed words with the "The Perfect Storm".It was very thought provoking and the amount of research done shows through in the final work. The errors in grammer and jargon can be overlooked due to its' fast paced style and readability. Take the time to read this book and do not skim over the contents to get to the end.

This well written book is not only a harrowing true story of men against the sea, but also taught me many interesting things about the dangers of commercial fishing which I found fascinating. I was not only gripped by the main events of the storm itself, but I was also interested in the human side of the relationships between wives, parents, girlfriends and the fisherman who would go to sea, maybe never to return. I was amazed at the risks that the rescue teams took, the National Guardsmen Swimmers, and Pararescue Jumpers are truely heros. As you read you understand the construction of the boat, the elements of the storm, decisions made, and how all of these may have contributed to the final outcome. The book goes much farther than the movie, and is a learning experience, as well as a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The movie, which showed unknown events as fact, and left out much of fascinating information found in the book, does not do justice to The Perfect Storm.

For me this is the best kind of book, one that tells a good tale and at the same time informs the reader. The story of the foundering of the Andrea Gail is pretty well known by now, but what Junger also does in this book is explain the nuts and bolts of how ships are lost at sea--- how waves crush them, break them apart, pitchpole them, downflood them and sink them. The description of the physiology of drowning was worth the price of the book for me.I agree with the reviewers who complained about structural problems in the narrative. The book needed also needed more references. But this will not prevent you from enjoying this great book. If the book reads more like a collection of magazine articles, just shrug and accept it as that. The articles themselves are excellent.Linda Greenlaw's book The Hungry Ocean is a good companion to The Perfect Storm. Greenlaw's book details a more normal swordfishing expedition, with funny stories and descriptions of day-to-day living on the sea.

I think this is the third time I've bought a copy of this book. When we travel, and I want to paint landscapes, this is one of those must-have references that push me to use bolder colors with more vivid results.Seriously, I should just keep a copy in my suitcase, so I don't keep ordering it. (Thank heavens for Amazon's two-day delivery. When I need this book, I need it right away. LOL)If you're painting landscapes with oils or acrylics, and possibly with watercolors, this book is a constant inspiration. If you like the painting on the book cover, order this book now. It'll show you new ways to add energy and emotion to your paintings, through color and contrast.

I have a couple of Kevin MacPherson's books on landscape painting. I thoroughly enjoy them and have always taken away valuable information from his writings. The only thing I still struggle with is the limited palette that he recommends in both of those books. I mean...what am I supposed to do with all of my many tubes of gorgeous oil paint? But, I'm working on it and have begun to feel more comfortable with using just a handful (Kevin's recommended handful plus a couple additions of my own) to do my color mixing. There is so much in this book that is useful to both the novice and advanced artist. All manner of practical advice, instruction, and demonstrations are included having to do with landscape painting in the great outdoors. And, really...if you're painting the outdoors, isn't it better to actually BE there rather than painting from a photo? (Although he has a book that addresses that, too, which is wonderful.)One of my favorite pieces of advice that I found in this book is Kevin's challenge to do 100 starts as well as a second challenge of painting a small plein air in one hour every day for 3 months. It's excellent advice. It forced me to stop concentrating on getting every painting "just right." It instilled a feeling of freedom that really loosened me up as an artist.Good stuff.

I have learned SO much from this book, highlighting several things on every page. He is a great teacher and I would recommend it to anyone who is having trouble mixing colors or upgrading their paintings. This is a perfect book for me and I highly recommend it to any level of painter.

Have 2 books by Kevin Macpherson and am using them to teach myself the techniques of oil painting. A friend who saw my efforts immediately noticed how the paintings captured light. Thank you Mr. Macpherson for your wonderful examples and "how to " instructions. I keep going back and re-reading chapters and poring over his luscious paintings. Love his style and enjoy his ability to explain the concepts in an approachable matter. Well done and a must purchase for painters.

Great book. Was recommended to me by a very skilled artist and I would recommend it to others. I need to keep rereading it. Pictures are great. It's not a long book, but it's very so succinct in terms of the information conveyed.

This is a great guide that gives some practical tips for plein air painters. I wouldn't recommend for a beginner though. It arrived by due date and was packaged well.I did not receive any discounts for my review.

Excellent book. Very informative. As a novice painter and student this book offers great advice, technique and insight into painting. I highly recommend it. It's larger book that is easy to read and digest, its really well written and presented. Even the more advanced painter and student should also find very useful information and is in this book. Kevin MacPherson is an excellent teacher who easily unravels they mystery and science of painting.

Excellent foundation for successful plan air painting in oil. Kevin's book hits the nail on the head ... with straightforward approach to mixing colors and constructing a successful painting on location.
