I first bought a copy of this book at Munro's in the mid 1980s. Preparing for a recent trip to Alaska I reread it. (Wouldn't want to confuse an eagle for a raven or a bear for a beaver, after all!) I also bought a new copy to take along and possibly bang up.In roughly 100 pages Stewart takes the reader through the six groups of Northwest Coast people, the basics of their art, the geometric components of the art, how the form is adapted to different shapes and uses, a description of each of the major motifs (primarily animals), and finally a discussion of stylistic variations between the six cultures.A book this length will not make you an expert. But this book succinctly provides a basic understanding, sufficient to understand the figures of a totem pole or the subject of a print. As such, it is a great overview for someone wanting an introduction to Northwest Coast art either as an end in itself, or as a gateway to further reading.

This is just what I was looking for. Gives a simple to understand basic overview of a number of Northwest Pacific tribes' illustrative arts styles. Puts the history in a modern perspective and speaks on the resurgence of Pacific NW Native art in the print-making realm.The author then goes on to detail the characteristics of a numerous animals and figures represented in the art. Each animal gets a page or two with great and varied examples of artwork representing that animal. For instance, there will be a paragraph or two in simple language giving the description on the left hand page, and on the right hand page will be four different images of Pacifc NW art depicting the animal. Sometimes there is only one image for an unusual animal, but they are all well chosen and reproduced.I have no reservations recommending this book to anyone interested in the subject, particularly if you're interested in creating art inspired by these traditions. My ~only~ complaint is that the book could be about 1/3 larger size wise, it's somewhat on the small size and would make a great coffee table book if larger.Along the same lines, I noticed one or two pages where the typesetting of page seemed to run off the edge. I'm guessing this was previously released in a larger edition and has been reformatted to fit this slightly smaller size. Even with these minor criticisms, I consider this book a must-have on the subject.

This book was assigned for my university-level class on NWC formline art, and with good reason. It details the standards of the art form (shapes, colors, subjects etc), illustrates variations among the various peoples of the NWC, and then illustrates how the rules are being stretched by contemporary artists who have been key to keeping the styles alive. This book will help aspiring formline artists understand how to make this kind of art, and it will enable anyone to be able to interpret what they're seeing when they look at formline - at minimum appreciate how the art is put together, and what's being depicted - and with some practice, the specific nation that originated the particular style of formline they're looking at.

I wanted to dabble in this form of artwork, so starting in the mid-1980's I bought EVERY book I could find on the topic (I currently have in excess of 160, including some going back to the late 1700's). This book was one of the first I bought and it remains one of my favorites. This book is absolutely outstanding, especially for someone new to the artform.It overviews the native cultures and tribes, provides info about style difference among tribes, covers the components of the art style, and gives lots of great visual examples, including some good basic info about the symbolism of the elements. It is very successful in giving enough detail to be useful without giving so much that it gets complicated or boring.Regardless of your interest in this artform, whether you just want one book to learn a little or a "first book" to help you get deeply into it, in my opinion this remains the best one to buy.If you want to do this sort of artwork, buy this book to get a good basic understanding, then buy "Nothwest Coast Indian Art: an Analysis of Form" by Bill Holm for a deeper understanding of the elements, and "Learning by Designing" Volumes 1 and 2 by Gilbert and Clark for more help with how to actually do it.

Deceptively simple, seemingly a little book of barely 100 pages, black and white except for the cover - what's to like? All of the afore mentioned. It packs so much without complications. From the Bullhead to the mythical Sisiutl the characteristics as depicted in these line drawings as you see them in NW art, laid out, plainly and clearly, many from varying perspectives. I have admired NW art for years in our various museums, but what I have picked up from this book will inform my 'seeing' in the future.

This book is a bit old. It is the first, or among the first, which addresses the refactoring issue. However, everything in it is relevant today.At the beginning and at the end you will find articles by various authors (Fowler, Beck, Opdyke, Roberts and Brant):* Refactoring , first example.* Principles of refactoring .* Bad smells in code .* Building Tests.* Toward a Catalog of Refactorings .* Big Refactorings .* Refactoring , Reuse , and Reality .* Refactoring Tools.* Putting It All Together.In the middle will find a great catalog of small transformations that define the steps to do the refactoring. This catalog, though simple is very important as explained in the first chapters.Fowler clearly explains why refactoring, some clues to identify the most important issues (code smells) to refactor in order to improves the design, and the catalog of transformations that are commonly used to solve each code smells.Dependending your experience and knowledge of software craftsmanship, you will surely perceive it more or less as a simple topic, but that makes it no less important.It is a fantastic book. It is one of the books that every software developer in the industry should read. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that it is not a truly revealing book. The items inside are all very basic and simple. You should not expect anything astonishing and the first impression is that all of it is obvious, but it is explained in an exceptional way and the catalog created by Fowler is really great.

Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code is one of those amazing books that every professional developer should have on their book shelf. The bulk of this book is a catalog of refactorings, but there is more to it as I will explain below.In case you aren't aware of what refactoring is, I'll give you Fowlers definition."Refactoring is the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure." For the most part this means cleaning up your existing - yet working - code. It involves anything from renaming a method to be more concise with the purpose of that method, to breaking up switch statements into a polymorphic structure. There are many different techniques used to refactor your code, which is what you learn in this book.Right off the bat Fowler throws you into a small sample application that is poorly designed. He then takes you through a few different refactoring techniques that improve the design of this simple application. Right from the start you see how effective refactoring can be. From there he goes into topics such as how to detect "bad smells" in code. This chapter is particularly informative and entertaining. You also learn a little bit about testing. After the introductory chapters you begin to dig into a deep catalog of refactorings. Each one is named. Like design patterns - naming the refactoring and building a vocabulary really helps in communicating thoughts and ideas.The catalog of refactorings is extremely useful. They are structured so that each refactoring has a name, a motivation, the mechanics and a simple example. This is very effective. As I said earlier, the name is useful because it helps build your programming vocabulary and it helps in communicating thoughts and ideas. The motivation explains why the refactoring should be done and when it should/shouldn't be used. The mechanics provide a step-by-step description of how to carry out the refactoring and the example shows a small example of the refactoring in use. All examples are written in Java 1.1.Although the examples are written in Java the book is still very good for any developer. Developers that have never written a line of code in Java, C++, C#, or anything similar may have a little bit of a tougher time working through this book. Luckily most examples are very small and simple so even if you fall into this category you shouldn't have too much of a learning curve. Some of the code is a bit outdated and can be done a bit better now-a-days but what do you expect? This book was written 8+ years ago! Times have changed. The ideas are still very relevant though, which is what makes this book so timeless.Martin Fowler books are always a joy to read. His writing style is humorous, yet often very blunt and to the point. Just like UML Distilled, he is able to communicate a lot of ideas into a very short amount of space - the book is a bit dense in other words, which is very good in my opinion. Martin Fowler does not beat around the bush and he has very strong opinions on certain topics. Unlike a lot of books you read, he actually writes with personality. I have a hard time putting his books down. Here is an example of the type of verbiage he uses...On how comments can be a "bad smell":"Don't worry; we aren't saying that people shouldn't write comments. In our olfactory analogy, comments aren't a bad smell; indeed they are a sweet smell. The reason we mention comments here is that comments often are used as a deodorant." - Martin Fowler. Here he is talking about how people use comments to hide bad code, or "bad smells".I highly recommend this book. If you are a professional developer or plan on becoming one then click the "Buy Now" button without second thought. If you have followed the artisan bread movement, this is an excellent adjunct. If you are not aware of all that and just like pizza or flatbread, you will STILL have a wonderful book that produces AMAZING pizza crust and flatbreads. This method works. I've been a breadmaker for 30 years.

Just made a Pizza Margherita. FABULOUS!!! I made the dough yesterday and put it in my refrigerator. Cut off 1/2 pound today, made the best home made pizza sauce, use my own basil and picked up fresh mozzarella from Sprouts. I will absolutely never buy pizza again. This brought me back to my home town in Olean NY where we had a thriving Italian community. This is as good as it gets. The method is flawless. Any time you want it, cut off an orange sized hunk and make the best, crispiest flavorful pizza ever.

Best pizza I have ever eaten! Period! The dough recipe is a no brainier and is just as easy as the book says it is. We control our ingredients so I know no GMO and I control my food source. We keep 2 dough containers full one for pizza and the other for bread see their bread book! Once you have your dough made up come in from work or yoga start to finish is no more than 30 minutes to eat the best wholesome pizza. We will have the kids and grandkids over on a weekend and have a pizza party they get to build their own pizzas their own ingredients a good family time. Get two pizza stones and two pizza peels and go to town.

Love all of their books. If you think you can not bake bread get their books. You will feel like a bread baking rock star! They present a technique that uses a wet dough. You toss the ingredients in a container, stir them well, put the lid on, and after a short rise, put it in the fridge to use throughout the week. About as fail proof as bread can be.Hint: try the cloche or dutch oven method. Use any heat proof dutch oven...heat it in the oven when pre heating, place your loaf in the pot, put the lid on for the first ten minutes and then remove the lid to finish baking. I bake to about a 204 degree internal temp. I use an instant read thermometer probe to check the temp. Perfect every single time.I use a scale and use metric. I literally line a bowl with a freezer bag and start tossing ingredients in it on the scale. I stir it well, let it rise, zip it up, and toss in the fridge for another day. No bowl to wash. I always use parchment when forming and place the whole thing, parchment and all, into the dutch oven.

I received the book on Friday, and left it on my dining room table until this morning (Sunday) around 9am. I picked it up after feeling slightly hungover from drinking too much the night before and decided to page through it. I hate reading, I have about 5-7 books that I've started and haven't finished.I read through the beginning which details just about everything you need to know about equipment, ingredients, and why this book will work unlike other quick and easy books. Typical stuff.I trusted it, not only because I love pizza, but as hungover as I was I couldn't resist the urge for a solid piece of pizza.12pm Sunday I realized that this wouldn't be that difficult. I ran to bed bath and beyond (thankfully 3 minutes from my home) and picked up a rolling pin, flour canister (no longer will I pour from the bag and create a mess). They didn't have the Danish Whisk and the lady thought I was crazy because I told her I was on a "pizza making mission".Genaurdi's is right behind the BB&B and I quickly picked up a pound of mozzarella, bag of flour, and some yeast. Getting home around 1, I did some work around my house, now 2pm and then prepped to make some dough. The dough took all of 10 minutes after making sure the water temp was just right for the recipe.Now the waiting...2 hours later, I had a large batch of fresh dough. I preheated my over (30 minutes) and then spread the dough, threw some toppings on, and slid it into the oven.Within 8 minutes one of the best and most delicious pizzas I've ever made (I've made pizza for 3-4 years now) was complete. My gf made a second and said herself "This is great and so easy".Now I have a pot filled with dough (my 5 quart container is coming from Amazon in 2 days) and plan on making pizza 2-3 more times this week.Super simple, super easy, and super delicious. Super...awesome book that will change my eating habits and make one of my favorite foods a household staple.Well done

This cooker is well designed and works well. But there is a small limit as to how much food one can stack up on the pizza crust. If I get too much the food will touch the heating element and cause real problems. We consumers need to know exactly how big a space there is between the rotating plate and the hearing element. I will try again with less food. And may just melt the cheese in the micro wave.

2017 was kind of an odd year for Haynes. Although they published a number of fine books, many of their newer "manuals" were novelty books, lacking the in-depth technical details that were a highlight of their earlier titles. This book, for the most part, is a refreshing return to form for Haynes, and much closer in tone to their "classic" aircraft manuals, such as the ones on the de Havilland Tiger Moth and Avro Lancaster.As usual, there are brief introductions focusing on the design of the aircraft, the different variants, and the type's combat record. Where this book really impresses are in the two chapters dedicated to the anatomy of the aircraft and the inner workings of its massive Wright R3350 engine. The author is currently an engineer with Kennet Aviation, which currently has the AD-4NA G-RADR in its collection, and he certainly knows his stuff. The descriptions of individual systems - hydraulics, oil, flying controls, undercarriage, etc. - are surprisingly in-depth, and there are dozens of "guts of the airplane" type photographs accompanying them. There's also a large number of diagrams sourced from original Technical Orders and maintenance manuals, ranging from views of the wing pin-pulling cylinder and hydraulic reservoir to overviews of the landing gear hydraulic system and propeller controls. If you're an airplane geek, you're going to find a lot to love here. Along with the technical material, there are quite a few personal recollections from former Skyraider pilots and armorers, and some modern-day accounts from those tasked with keeping surviving aircraft flying and maintained for the airshow circuit.Unfortunately, the writing in the non-technical areas is rather clumsy in places (too many exclamation points!), as in the translation of an account from a French mercenary pilot. The diagrams are large and clear, but unfortunately quite a few of them lack keys. One major disappointment is actually the binding. Since mid-2016 Haynes has been using proper stitched bindings, rather than the poor-quality glued bindings used previously, which split way too easily and wouldn't stay open. This book seems to use a combination of both techniques. I'm not sure how it'll hold up in the long run, but hopefully this is just a minor hiccup and Haynes will use stitched bindings in the future. That aside, this is still a pretty solid reference, and more detailed than I'd expected it to be.

A nice reference bokk, but not al lot of details, more stories.

I bought the manual because I worked on these outstanding planes in Thailand and Vietnam as a weapons mechanic and was thrilled when I found out Tony Hoskins was producing this manual. I was proud to be a small part of it by sharing some photos. I gave a short history of the role of the A-1 to our Veterans group, which is mostly made up of Army and Navy with a scattering of Air Force. One Navy man identified his Spad on an aircraft carrier that he was plane chief on. He had tears in his eyes when Tony provided me with the original photo I requested from him to be presented to the Navy plane chief. Just reading the manual and the history of building the various versions of the plane with a giant engine as the basis of construction and the reliability and air worthiness of this aircraft backed up the first impression of what a wonderful airplane this was to work on and be part of the crew that had near impossible missions to perform in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam

Nice book. I learned a lot about the Skyraider that I hadn't even suspected before. For example many versions have a two person cabin behind the fuel tank.

I bought this book because, through many arcane marriages, I am a step cousin of a branch of the Goldsteins (aka Bernhards, they, too, changed their names). There was always a lot of talk about their cousin, Harriet. It's not often one has the chance to read about someone whose name was bandied about frequently and whom I met once. Even my 93 year old mother who has a hard time remembering what day it is knew exactly who I was talking about when I told her about the book.So, it was a shock to find out someone who was mentioned in only the most glowing terms and who was most gracious to me during our very brief meeting might not be the paragon I was always told she was. I must admit to a bit of schadenfreude: certainly there was no one in my family who had achieved anywhere near the heights I was told she had and I would have loved to counter with someone. I was of an age and so dazzled by anyone connected to the movies she could have sucked me in with very little effort, but I was of little interest to her. While this review is more about me than the book, I don't think I could offer objective review. But, god, the memories it brought back.

In a memoir, the author's most personal thoughts and recollections are on offer and the result can be very difficult to read. This seems true with Michael Frank's "The Mighty Franks: A Memoir". But what is difficult to read must have been excruciating to actually live through. Frank grew up in Los Angeles in a family so marked by the malevolence of one family member, his aunt Harriet Frank, Jr, whose lifetime of narcissistic behavior terrorised the family for sixty years. Michael Frank doesn't use the word "narcissist" to describe his aunt, but her behavior mimics the narcisstic behavior of several people I know. If you read the book, you may use a different term to describe "Hanky", depending on your experience with such a malevolent person.Michael Frank's aunt and uncle are real people, who have Wikipedia entries. His uncle, Irving Ravetch, and his aunt, Harriet Frank, Jr,(known as "Hanky") were noted screenwriters in the 1950's to 1980's. They worked primarily with director Martin Ritt. (You should read their Wiki entries before reading the book.) Michael was their nephew - a double nephew, at that, because his mother was Irving Ravetch's sister and his father was Harriet Frank's brother. A cozy combination which made for a cozy family unit, whose members lived a few blocks from each other in the Hollywood hills. To make matters even cozier, the two grandmothers shared an apartment after their respective husbands died. Both couples lived in and out of the other's homes, and the Frank's three sons were thought of a surrogate sons for Irving and Hanky, who had no children. However, the Ravetch's, particularly Hanky, seemed to prefer young Michael to his brothers, and, indeed, to anyone other than her husband. She was the "Auntie Mame" to his Patrick and showered him with gifts and attention. But the attention was that of his place in Hanky's world. She was the sun, he was planet circling. He finally rebelled in his late teens but by then Hanky's malevolence to him and the rest of the family continued unabated.Michael Frank's memoir begins when he was a child and continued up through Irving's death in 2010 and to Hanky's continued existence. He spares little of the "true" Hanky Ravetch and her wretched influence in his book. It's a fascinating book, as memoirs often are.

This book was slow-going for me at first, but then it picked up and the deeper it went into Harriet Frank, Jr.'s completely twisted personality, the more it gripped me. This woman was a study in self-absorption and terror plus an enormous need for power over others and control! And all of these traits were simply abided by her very tolerant husband. I could not get over him! Her adoration of her one nephew (out of three) was definitely pathological and destructive to him, but she could or would not recognize that. Childless herself, she grabbed onto this boy ferociously and way beyond what was normal. She rendered his poor parents almost powerless. She was definitely a force! The outcome for him is worth reading the book to find out. And she lived to be 100!

This memoir beautifully captures the seductive yet also destructive relationship that Frank had with his childless aunt, a powerful force in his upbringing who essentially steamrollered his parents into letting her mold him into her acolyte. His aunt was also that rarity then and now, a successful and powerful female Hollywood screenwriter. The book's glimpse into her work world isn't very deep, but satisfying nonetheless. Where Frank's aunt's behavior is concerned, he doesn't use the word "narcissist," but the concept haunts every page, and is especially evident in the final chapters of his aunt's life, after she loses her health, husband, and vitality. Then, without batting an eyelash, she turns her exploitative and exhibitionistic energy to other areas, revealing that essential shallowness of personal engagement so typical of someone with her condition. My only issue with the book, and it is a minor one, is that Frank himself at times feels insubstantial, at least in his portrait of himself as adult. But overall this is an important book for the portrait it paints of an unusual woman and the triangle she created between herself, a young boy, and his family.

I've been a fan of Ripley's since I was a kid and would watch the show in reruns on TV. I have visited three museums so far and hope to do more because they are so fun. When given the chance to check out this book I went for it and was not disappointed. It is a great coffee table book that you can peruse whenever you get bored or just waiting around. I do a lot work that requires wait time of uploading and processing, so this is my standby book to grab and read a section when I can. The nice thing is that you don't have to commit to a chapter rather just read one entry and move on.Some of my favorites are the entries on Coney Islands, the numerous medical conditions (warning - they can get kinda graphic but that's to be expected) and the crazy art they detail. There is also lots on animals, wired places and strange record breakers. The book has a large assortment of topics so it's not easy to get bored by one. There are plenty of pictures and lots of short easy to digest stories.My only caution is that the book has some bizarre and gross stuff in it and it may not be for kids. I've come to expect that kind of thing from Ripley's so it's no shock to me but as a review I felt I should mention it.Overall a fun book to grab and peruse. With hundreds of story you have ample material for months of conversation starters and beyond.

Every year I buy my son The Guinness book of World Records for Christmas. This year I decided I was going to give this book annually to my daughter at Christmas so they both get one.I wasn't sure how this book would compare to the world record book or if they were even the same. I actually found that while it is different, it's quite an enjoyable read. If you've never tried this book, rest assured, it's very interesting and informative.The book has a lot of crazy facts in it. There is also A lot of pictures in it, which is great.and although there is definitly a "fun factor" to this book, there is also educational value to it as well.I think this is going to become a Christmas tradition. Buying my daughter a new edition each year. This is a great present for all ages of the family.

I started flipping through it, page by page, full of mind-boggling and interesting facts, accomplishments, and unbelievable occurrences. I appreciated learning about the history of Ripley and his desire to travel the globe, even to my home country of Colombia, in search of amazing life mysteries, rarities, and discoveries. I love that I can go page by page or just open it randomly and I will learn something that will ignite electrical currents in my brain. I keep it on my coffee table in my living room and I know that guests will be delighted when they peruse through the pages and read the fascinating anecdotes contained within. Ultimately, yes, a lot of this information is probably a click away, but it's also here beautifully compiled and neatly organized with clever design accompanied by unique photographs. I definitely recommend it. It's a hoot!

Not the book I remember,that told you stuff like the world record for eating the most marshmallows without swallowing any(31 when I lookedit up in Ripley's in the '70s)or the national record for being on the line the longest time without a promotion or a raise (that wa made in the 30's,38 years.and still stood in the late 70s.)But try to find facts like that or who ate the most sugar products without getting diabetes in the Ripley's of today.Now it's got proveable,cold,hard facts,so the difference is like having a textbook versus having a tabloid.

Warning! This Kindle edition book is not format friendly with Amazon's Fire HD 8! The print is small, without scalable text sizes, outside of magnification features of the HD 8, which are horrible for this e-book! Navigation throughout is a nightmarish chore, from page flipping, resizing fonts, bookmarks, horizontally stuck without a vertical option, along with some facts being cut off from the terrible formatting of this title! (I only wished that I would've previewed it before buying, but I thought that Ripley's Believe It Or Not Kindle editions, would've had the same quality of care in the formatting department as other titles as EC Comics?! It's my first disappointment in regards to a Kindle edition book from Amazon!) Caveat Emptor... Buyer beware!

Normally I'm one to get something such as Guinness book of world records or something to that affect, but went with this book instead. I have to say it a lot more fun to read and learn about. It also makes a great talking piece when friends come over! It's a very enjoyable read for anyone who love quirky facts.

As a teacher I couldn't wait to place this book in my classes library. The book didn't even make it into my library before the boys in my class were dying to get their hands on it. From the cover to the last page, this book captures every child's attention. Each 'article' is full of captivating pictures and facts, making easy for kids to understand. I can't wait to use it to teach nonfiction text features. This book is a perfect edition to any classroom or children's library at home who loves interesting facts. Even with its sturdy hard book construction, I can see this book 'failing apart' from the amount of use from my students this school year.

I originally bought this book for a nephew, however after thumbing through it and catching myself multiple times saying, "Wow! Really?" I decided to keep a copy for my coffee table. Sitting at home during Irma this book was awesome and gave me not only something to read but things to talk about with company. I highly recommend as a gift or as something fun for yourself.
