I really enjoyed Marie benedict’s two previous books CARNEGIE’S MAID and THE OTHER EINSTEIN so was looking forward to her take on Hedy Lamarr. I was NOT disappointed as she delivered the compelling story of Hedy Lamarr. Benedict brought to life the little known history of one of the world’s most beautiful women and, more importantly, highly intelligent women.Hedwig Kiestler was born in Austria to a Jewish mother and father. While performing the role of Empress Sisi, she came to the attention of the munitions magnate Fritz Mandl. After a short courtship, his proposal of marriage was seen as a way to protect Hedy from the growing anti-Semitism of the time.Mandl spoke openly to Hedy about the armaments and munitions he sold. Always the curious one, Hedy read as much as she could about the arms her husband sold and listened in on conversations he held with business partners. The men never imagined that this beautiful woman had any interest in or understood their conversations.Mandl became more and more controlling and Hedy knew she had to escape his powerful clutches. She flees to England and then to Hollywood where Jewish actors and actresses were fleeing to as they could not perform in Europe. She quickly becomes one of the highest paid performers and is dubbed the most beautiful woman in the world. I preordered this book because I knew a little bit about the real Hedy Keisler. However I regret the choice of the author to write in 1st person voice. I couldn’t help wondering what the real Hedy said and thought. I found the story interesting, especially the early part about the relationship with her mother and father, as well as her teenage marriage to the fabulously wealthy Fritz Mandl. I actually was disturbed by her parents willingness to use her fame/ notoriety to “protect” them in the event Austria fell to Hitler. The book showed me Lamar's steely determination, even at the age of 19. I can see if you knew nothing at all about the actress' history that the book would be extremely interesting. But for me, it was light on development of other characters in her life. Time skipped ahead too fast. And I was left wanting.

"The Only Woman In The Room" is a true story about a wonderful person. It starts when Hedy Kiesler is a 19 year old aspiring actress in Vienna being pursued by Fritz Mandl the wealthiest man in Austria. He gained his wealth by selling munitions in the period leading up to World War II. Hedy is Jewish and her family, being fearful of anti semitism persecution, encourage her to marry Fritz for protection. Fritz was cruel and Hedy plotted to escape from him. She saved money for passage on an ocean liner where she met Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM studios, and eventually became the glamorous movie star Hedy Lamar. While Hedy was with Fritz she sat in on meetings as his trophy wife where discussions of war weapons were discussed. Incredibly, she became expert in the science of weapons technology, so much so, that she was co-inventor of a U.S patent for tracking submarine torpedos more accurately. Hedy Lamar was a truly remarkable woman. Very good read.

I loved Carnegie’s Maid so I was excited that Marie Benedict had a new book coming out. It is an interesting take on Hedy LaMarr’s life. However, one thing that irritated me was the reference to the “adoption” of her son James. He is referred to as a refuge from a European country in the book. The author portrays it like Hedy saved James. I know that this book is historical fiction, but from everything I read, Hedy said James was adopted only because he was actually her illegitimate son.

I can't say enough about how disappointing I found this book. I recommended it for my book group and led the discussion. As I read, I wanted to hurl the book across the room many times. I knew that Hedy Lamarr was a beautiful, complicated and brilliant woman. That she had escaped from a war torn Europe and possessed a genius mind behind her stunning looks. The first four fifths of the book covered her abusive relationship with her first husband, an inaccurate relationship with her parents (yes, she was close to her father and her mother was cold, but they never went along with her decision to marry her munitions mogul suitor), descriptions of her costumes and jewels, the controversy over her nude scenes and simulated orgasm in her first movie, her escape to America and, finally, finally, her invention of broad spectrum technology for which she received no recognition during her lifetime. The book failed to mention that she tinkered with inventions all during her adult life, that the baby she "adopted" because he was an infant refugee from Europe was really her biological son, or that she died a meth addict because she, like many studio stars of that time, was fed uppers and downers so she could work slave hours for the film moguls. While it listed some of her most famous roles, it failed to even mention her most acclaimed and well-known movie, the one that won several oscars, "Samson and Delilah," which co-starred Victor Mature. In short, here was a woman who yearned to be taken seriously all her life and then was given short shrift by this poorly written novel. I kept going back to the professional critic's reviews and just can't understand why they are favorable. Lamarr's story is so compelling and captivating. What a great book it could have been.

Michelle: FYI: the wise old man who spoke of the faith of a mustard seed was Jesus of Nazareth. This is a fine book for all those who are enthralled with New Age, Hoodoo, Voodoo, Santerian and "modern" Wiccan practices and belief systems. Me, I like simple. Truth be told, my thinking is 100% Catholic. Especially regarding the preturnatural and the disposition of the human soul after the death of our bodies. It's easier for me to call a spade a spade instead of trying to invent a vocabulary to explain my abstract thoughts/beliefs as to WTF is really going on. Ghosties? Stagnant energy? Thread-like attachments which are magically placed into 3 vessels after being psychically severed from the afflicted person? Seriously? If more so-called Paranormal Investigators suffered more malign mental/physical consequences from needless bumbling and destruction of the lives of real people, Truth MIGHT become important once again. Sadly, all these shows only demonstrate how self-serving these charlatans are. And sadly, I now see that the literature is also shallow and incredibly dangerous. If all else fails, try Jesus. He'd rather die than live without you.

What this book boils down to is this: Do you want to simply explore haunted locations with newly purchased, expensive paranormal gadgetry to scare the crap out yourself and your friends, or do you wish to involve yourself to the point of helping these spirits move on for their own sake or for the sake of the people who live in these locations? If your answer to this question is the later, than this is a book for you. Michelle Belanger (who often works with Ryan Buell from A&E's "Paranormal State") brilliantly takes you through the steps of survival steps set against the background of a real haunting. This book will help you if you suspect you are a sensitive or psychic and wish to develop these skills. She teaches you the art of cleansing a location (as well as yourself). She teaches you how to be safe when getting personally involved in these cases. She explains the differences between residual haunting, human hauntings, and non-human (spirits who have never been alive in human form) hauntings. She warns and teaches about demonic hauntings and possessions and gives you guides as to how to make it less likely for you to bring any of these entities home with you while still being attached to your energy. In order for this book to work for you, you have to believe in SOMETHING besides ghosts, whether it is a religious affiliation, God in general, a higher power, or simply the goodness in yourself. I have just gotten my St. Benedict's medal that is securely fastened around my neck and will remain there for the remainder of my life. But your own power of INTENTION will allow room for you to use whatever protective device you deem necessary to wear on your body to infuse with the power to call to for help and to store your inner skills and powers. As I said, if you are serious about becoming more involved in the paranormal than superficially or as a hobby, this is a MUST READ. And perhaps if you are NOT so serious about it, you may need to read this book even more, as this is a situation where you are more likely to find yourself in paranormal and/or spiritual trouble (and that is both a dangerous and scary place to find yourself). Ghost hunting is NOT A GAME.

I love Michelle Belanger’s work, and this is no exception. It has helped me immensely in my research (and I’ve been doing this for over a decade), I feel much more grounded and protected after using the techniques I’ve learned in this book, and I really thought I had the whole spiritual protection thing down pat. But what I’ve learned in my years of research is a drop in a bucket compared to the info in this book. Anyone who deals with the paranormal, or thinks their house is haunted, or just feels like something isn’t right with them spiritually should definitely pick up this book.

A primer for those who are seriously pursuing this field, this book covers the bases in regard to natural and elemental energies. I am keeping this on my shelf, certain that I will refer to it again and again. One thing I like about this is Belanger goes to great pains to be inclusive of all belief systems and worldviews of this subject. This contradicts many who study the paranormal, in that many are condescending of some belief systems. I feel I am more comfortable and more confident in dealing with these spirits, though there are so many different origins.

I found this book while we were visiting in New York city at Christmas time. It was at the hotel we were staying at. I got about half the book finished before we checked out and was real excited to finish it. The book was published in 1995 and is Bill Gates predictions of how the tech world will change in the next 10-15 years. He reiterated often that these were just his thoughts on where things would go and that many would probably not happen. What was fascinating about reading the book 20 years later, was all his predictions happened. This included one prediction that robots would not be common place, which apparently from reading the book many in the tech world thought would be case at that time. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Love reading what Bill Gates saw ahead, many years ago. In 1980 he was predicting that we would someday be using computers the size of credit cards.What a visionary he was - and is today! He is a man to be much admired.

Excellent condition,faster than expected shipping. Again,great condition for a first edition. Very insightful and preniscient read by Mr. Gates. I still find it amazing that he wrote this book in 1995 and now in 2013 practically all his predictions has come true.

The book came damaged

Dry as unbuttered toast, a firehose delivery of techno prognostications streamed from the massive brain of a true genius. It just keeps coming, wave after wave of what happened and what's next. Made my modestly average brain hurt until I put it down. The early Microsoft years are fun but then it's just a tedious delivery of the rolling technology wave, mostly spot on, which is amazing for sure. If Gates or his editors only had a sense of humor. But alas, not so.

I am loving this Bible, very impressed. Not a huge fan of the translation, great for study.

I was completely blown away be the excellent material in the book. "Student" in the title is a superfluous repetition of the word "Study" and gave the absolutely wrong impression that it was going to be a dumbed down version of the regular ESV Study Bible. It gives a lot more meat up front. Footnotes for OCDs are reduced to a microscopic font size: I like reading the enlightening commentary without having to look at more subtitles, like some boring academic thesis.Admire the quality of the pages, completely legible print, binding and high quality of manufacture and layout, and surprise - it is made in the USA. The print is much darker and pleasant to read than more expensive outsourced bibles. Much has been said about the green highlighted "Did you know" questions. They are scattered all over this bible, and generously in the Old Testament, so it is hard to fall asleep on the OT. Now I "Know" how large Israel was during the time of King Solomon, and I was surprised Israel covered a lot of countries now at loggerheads with modern day Israel.There are profiles of people in yellow highlighted boxes, notes in blue, lists in mauve, maps and illustrations make this bible a tasteful technicolor affair. I bought this bible for the 900 "Did you know" (which would itself have merited the purchase) but I got a lot more with this "Student" bible than with my plethora of other ESV study bibles. This unfortunately titled product could actually supersede all other ESV study bibles in popularity in future. No adult prefers carrying a bible titled "Student", which implies incompleteness and lower status. It is one thing to be meek, but quite another to flaunt your meekness.This bible should be re-titled "Essential" Study Bible, or "Basic" Study Bible. There is nothing "junior" about this bible. Are we not all still students, whatever bible we use? I can foresee a larger print version, or even a waterproof one in future. Other than the unfortunate use of "Student", this is really a masterclass of a study bible. On another thread, it bodes well for the US economy if it can produce such a high quality bible with so many features at such a highly competitive price.

I had each of my confirmation students buy this Bible. It is great. ESV is a wonderful translation and the commentary, references and notations make this a very functional Bible. As a Lutheran Christian I was also greatly encouraged by the fact that, while not "Lutheran" the study notes are quite faithful to our theological perspective, which is almost unheard of in a study Bible. It is appropriate for Jr. High and high school aged children. I commend it to you.

I wanted to check it out before buying it for family. I really like it and love the wonderful charts with many timelines--which are very useful, plus it has diagrams, and many beautiful and up-to-date maps. The charts organizes the narrative of portions of the Bible and then I like to go back and read the material. The profile of different Bible individuals is wonderful. There is a glossary as well as a concordance and the Bible is filled with cross references that make Bible study easier.The organization of the entire book is exceptional and will benefit all. I have not tried all the features but what I have are excellent. . I used the bookmark feature to get back to where I was since I have an older version of Amazon Fire.We like the translation very much also and think students and adults will find it helpful in Bible study whether they use the book or Kindle version.Bob and mj

The ESV student bible study is a great bible for anyone really, but especially those who are trying to understand more of the scripture. I just love the bible. It has references at the bottom, and before each chapter starts they have a little overview and detail about what the chapter will be about. The pages themselves are pretty thin. It is a hardcover bible, which is great because it makes it more durable. One thing though is that in the new testament, Jesus' dialogues are in red font (not all bibles come like this, only some), but i was hoping this bible would do that but it doesn't, but that's okay. Other than that I recommend this purchase, maybe as gift for someone.

Bought this Bible as a gift for my girlfriend (her old Bible fell apart and she really wanted a study Bible) and am very pleased with what I got. I have an older version of the Crossway ESV Student Study Bible, and frankly I want hers! It's very well made and just overall nice. I am excited to give it to her. :)

Great student bible! The study notes and profiles included make delving deeper so much easier. The notes offer a lot of insight that I may have missed on first reading. The illustrations are wonderful for helping me 'see' what the text is describing.

This is a great study bible. I'm a youth pastor and we gifted these to our graduating high school seniors. I love the ESV, and the Student Study Bible really is right on for a high school student.
