I believe that those of us who have played the game at any level, aiming to win, but faced with middle order batting collapses, were left chewing our nails, or tearing hair off our heads, will relate very well to it.Written with dollops of humour, the book covers the journey of the Captain Scott Cricket team on their around the world in 3 weeks. Madcap adventures abound. Most of it outside the Cricket field.All kinds of emotions are laid out for the reader. All real ones. The ending left me reflecting about how good really is a short life lived well. God bless Harry Thompson's soul for sharing this story with us before calling it a day on planet earth.

An excellent yarn spanning 25 years, about a village cricket teams journey. Full of enjoyable laughable romps, both on and off the field. An around the world tour and all the issues with travel, grog, accommodation, and just getting the team onto the fields.Yes, I would recommend this read to all sports people. I love this book - it is interesting, unusual, wise, witty and warm. It begins with a cricket match where penguins really DID stop play. This chapter has the immortal line, 'Who else but a New Zealander would pack a cricket ball when he's going to the Antarctic'?

This is a thoroughly entertaining travelogue about a village cricket team, optimistically called the Captain Scott XI. Having played up and down England and adventured to a few other countries, they decide to play their way around the world.Harry Thompson captains the team and has played in Antarctica when he happened to be there, so he sets out to be the first person to play cricket on all seven continents. Taking a long New Year break he and the team head off on appallingly mismanaged flights and cram the matches against Barbados, South Africa and elsewhere into the schedule.I laughed out loud every evening that I read this book. I know as much about cricket as you could write on a matchbox. As with Michael Green's The Art of Coarse Rugby, however, it's the participation that counts, not the rule book. I am very sure that cricketing aficionados will get more out of this than I did, but don't let that stop the non-sporty folks from reading it too.Thompson worked for the BBC and drops names such as Hugh Laurie and Hugh Grant into the tale, focusing on how they played cricket when they turned out one Saturday, but the real stars are the varied characters who make up the team.I was really saddened by the end where we learn that the author died of cancer shortly after finishing the copy-edits. However it makes us understand that if there is anything we want to do in life, we should just go ahead and do it.

Wondefully written, funny adventures of a cricket team traveling around the world and losing all but one of their games; HOWEVER, if you don't know much about or care about cricket, you have to skip a lot of pages, which is what I did. Still I enjoyed the book -- and it has a kicker of a conclusion -- but I can't recommend it without the cricket qualifation. P.S. I look forward to reading any other of his books.

Part memoir, part travel book, largely an account of joy of living in relation to inconsequential games of cricket. Cricket is a foreign language to me, so descriptions of play went over my head, but did not take away from my enjoyment of this book. The heart of the author shone through, as well as those of other players. It made me want to travel, and how. It made me envy men with their bonds of sport. It also taught me to avoid British Airways at all cost.Not a great book, it's honest and fun. I rate it generously because of the closing pages.

This book covers all the necessary/pertinent information about Tagalog, and begins by noting the differences in the language between Tagalog/Pilipino/Filipino in a manner that is understandable and I believe the author explains complicated subjects very well and accessible for the public. I purchased this book for my partner who wants to learn Tagalog. I am still learning but have progressed past basics, and I decided to read the book myself; it was a good refresher of beginner-level skills and the way in which material is introduced is very well done, in my opinion. For example, the book delves right in but builds upon the vocabulary, phrases, and grammar as time goes on. I have read a bunch of Tagalog books and think this is probably the best one for someone who has zero knowledge of the language. Maraming salamat po!

Headed to the Philippines to meet my wife's parents for the first time.Always want to make that first impression a good one, even if I call one of them a chair.

Don't even try to speak Tagalog. Just show the non English speaker the phrase in the book.

I didn't like this book. I've stopped reading it.I think it has to do with the way the book is organized. It doesn't do a good job to explain sentence or phrase construction, and content towards the beginning of the book doesn't (in my opinion) start with the useful basics. I moved forward a few sections to find more useful words and phrases but this just leads to memorization. The best part of the book for me was the first chapter which explains some history of the Philippines and the language.I can't resell this like new book for enough $ to make it worth my effort. But I will look for a different book to learn from.

These soups are fantastic. Bread recipes are wonderful. Everything I've made from this cookbook has gotten high marks from the family. Easy,nutritious, and varied. Recommend highly.

It is recipe books like this gem that have resparked my interest in cookbooks. The layout is easy to follow, I love the way that the details about how long it will take plus the “what I could pair it it with” is not a mystery. Ivy has astute culinary sense and you seriously never have to wonder what she was thinking when she offers a recipe. This is a rare gem in our current world of allrecipe disasters. I’m having such a good time with this soup book. Paired with a good Fall it’s a welcome addition!

This is an amazing book, with tons of tasty recipes that will expand your palate and give you some great ideas for your own recipes.Ivy has done a great job here explaining each dish, matching with a great bread for dipping. The photography is excellent.

I love, love, love this cookbook! The recipes are indeed easy, and quick, as advertised and the photographs are beautiful! I especially like the "flavor toolbox" in the Getting Started section and the fact that each recipe has a personal introduction. Ms. Manning is clearly passionate about sharing her love of food and cooking with us and reading her comments throughout is like spending time in the kitchen with an old friend!

Couldn't wait for this cookbook to arrive, as we all have five other Ivy Manning cookbooks. We love soup! The recipes are easy to follow, and we've already made two that were totally yummy. I love how she isn't shy about telling readers it's ok to buy broth in a store - it makes things so much easier! And I'm excited to start slipping anchovies into recipes. Bet nobody notices!

I thought this cookbook was very inventive. I have cooked my way through many soupcookbooks but I was looking for something fresh and this was just what I needed to getmy creativity moving again. It's because of this author that I just ordered Weekday Vegetarian,written by the same author. It looks very creative and fresh just like this soup cookbook. If your looking to give yourtired recipes a rest and do something awesome check this out.

If you really want to make "easy" soups using this book, be prepared to add a lot of ingredients to your kitchen pantry that you may use only once. Seems the recipes are a bit "strange" in that they really do not utilize a standard pantry inventory. Wouldn't recommend it.

Love it!! The soup recipes and the bread recipes are totally out of the box and very creative. Each soup has at least two bread suggestions so the flavors will compliment each other. Love the book markers in there so you can save it soup recipe in a bread recipe at the same time. Excellent book for anybody who loves soup

It confirms many things I thought and heard were going on in the Ministry. I understand the difficulty of giving up on something you’ve invested your life and belief in even in the sight of compelling evidence. It took me years to shake the twisted dogma I was taught by Wierwille. On the other hand I still have some fond memories of the people and fellowship I had in Twig. I am back to being the atheist I was before my Way experience. I do appreciate good Christians with true human love and respect.

I had met Charlene my first year in the way when I was at headquarters for training as the second wave as WOW ambassadors. We went to a coffeehouse where there was dancing and laughter. My memory of Charlene was seeing her on the dance floor doing an interpretive dance with another member of the way. Even then this impacted my life as my thoughts were that I wish I could be as free as she in expressing myself in dance. This time was a time of God truly being love and it being shown to other members. A sidenote to this experience is I avoided the group that was to go out witnessing that night as I tried to do or not do throughout my time with the way. A rewarding book in so many ways I can’t even start to explain. Don’t have to because Charlene has done it so well. Thanks to you Charlene!!!

This is a terrific book and a riveting story about how one young girl escaped years of emotional and psychological abuse from a religious cult. It is a true story. Ms. Edge tells her true story with truth and grace and clearly shows how people can distort God's word. The problem is not with God, as much as people who USE God's word to manipulate others, control others, and the psychologically damaging effects of obedience to a man or group, as opposed to a one-on-one relationship with God/Christ. Anytime obedience and secrecy and compliance are DEMANDED, (as opposed to respect which is earned by how you LIVE your faith) one should question the motivations of the group leader or group. When people are afraid to speak up or question faith teaching because they fear repercussions from a leader or a group, this is a clear DANGER SIGN! RUN and don't look back! This is not an anti-faith book. Far from it. It's a book that shows how crooked people can distort and damage an innocent longing and seeking for a genuine relationship with God. I'm glad she had the courage to honestly question harmful teachings and found the strength to escape.

This is the story of Ms Edge's nearly 2 decades of involvement with a "Christian" group that started out with good intentions, until things ultimately got very twisted. It is the story of one woman's gradual realization that she has been sold a pack of lies.As a 1978 PFAL graduate, I was involved with The Way for a couple of years, even considered myself a faithful member, until I started noticing that it didn't all add up. I still have some of the Way books. I look at them from time to time, thinking "some of this is good. How did it all end so badly?" Fortunately I was never married in the ministry, or financially dependent on it, like Ms Edge.This is quite a lengthy tome, with a lot of day to day detail about the inside of the ministry. From my perspective, the most interesting part is the author's extensive involvement with biblical research, using the ancient Syrian and Peshitta texts. This "biblical research" was Wierwille's "hook" on the naive and innocent public. While it was true that no other ministry was doing this type of work, it became tainted by Wierwille's psychopathic desire to make a name for himself and control others. Most of it wasn't real research, but it looked elegant and spiritual from the outside.I drifted away as I began to notice that many of the folks attracted to The Way were mixed up, hurting and confused. Most seemed to focus more on Wierwille than on Christ. Quoting the Bible replaced living a true Christian lifestyle. They maintained the letter of the law and not the spirit. Many had outlandish beliefs, such as Wierwille's smoking habit couldn't harm him because he was "The Man of God." Of course he died relatively young from cancer. So most of us smoked, because it was "OK". Although some of the things The Way taught were useful, the followers were just as subject as any "non-believer" to various weaknesses and human foibles. There was definitely a lack of sexual purity, as we later learned about Wierwille.Now, nearly 40 years later, I look back and I am thankful I was basically unscathed due to my limited involvement with the group. My take home message was overall a positive one. I still respect the Bible. I even have an interlinear or two hanging around, haha, should I ever have the time to indulge in things like that. However I now understand that it is more important to live out our beliefs, rather than indulging in ever finer parsing out of ancient biblical texts. Oh, yes, and don't smoke. It is a horrible habit.

I used to belong to The Way until i was in the Way Corps and saw some of the hypocrisy that she talks about. I left in 1977 when i lost trust in the leadership. Good book, i just wish she had used some real names and outed some of the creeps who were leaders, but i guess maybe it could cause her legal problems. Surprisingly i guess, i still believe a lot of things they taught and have found them very helpful in my spiritual life.

Fabulous book. Charlene is an excellent writer and the story was an intriguing true story on her experience with Cults.....Two of my book clubs have read the book and a third has it on their list to read.

Story of the brave exit from a very 'high profile' group from the pit of hell "posing' as Christians; they even "teach a class in speaking in tongues"! If you believe the Bible at all, this practice alone bans them; they also preach "all sin is okay once saved"- ridiculous; sexual deviance, too

Edge writes about her past, but through her eyes of the present. It is a fascinating story and Edge is a talented writer. If you are interested in getting an inside view of an insidious cult, read this book.
