Sarah Baxter grew up in Norfolk, England and now lives in Bath. This is a beautiful book, with colorful illustrations. Bu it is meant to be read in its entirety. It is beautifully written. It points out places in the city in question where you can still find traces of either the author or their books, but no practical information on how to find them. I was expecting help in exploring places important to Jane Austen in Bath, and while places are named, street names given, there is little advice on how to do this. So if that is what you are looking for, this is not the book for you.

If you have a literary bent and are contemplating travel this is a fascinating book. Even if your not venturing to far flung place, this gem of a book will allow loads of armchair traveling.Twenty-five locations were chosen from St Petersburg in Russia to Saigon in Vietnam and places both north and south of the equator and around the globe encompassing longitudes from England to Chile.I grappled with artist's impressions for the first couple of chapters. I am used to, and was expecting photographs, ideally artistically shot. You know a bridge or archway looming through the bull rushes taken from a prone position etc. etc.But here we have artistic impressions by Amy Grimes, superbly rendered, colorful, and often showing a 'naive' primitivism influence, with occasional magic realism touches. These art works, capturing the essence of places as we're guided through select novel pathways, are beautiful additions.So this was unexpected! I was envisaging maps and photos to support Baxter's inclusions and find this literary discussion of the place, time and background of a selected novel, supported by Grimes' delicately nuanced works, rewarding. I found myself enjoying this different approach. And I remembered the small book and pencils I used to carry with me to do sketches with. Nowhere near as creative as Grimes' digital collage works and overlays, but I identified with the process. (BTW reading more about Grimes's artistic methods via other access points was interesting.)In fact I was disappointed there weren't more illustrations. They were the deciding factor for me between a four star or a five star rating.Fortunately I have read most of the books selected, and more fortunately I have visited many of their locations. So Baxter's book reminded me of not only the associated books, but my own responses to the novels and to their locations. The particular places recalled to me the times and conditions in which the novels were set, be it at the time of the Hemingway and the Spanish Wars, Steinbeck and Cannery Row in Monterey or Austen's Bath.I would not be taking this book with me on a trip (unless in eBook form) but I would read it before and after I travelled to any of the places mentioned--just for the pleasure it gives. This is a book to be enjoyed in hardcopy, to be held, to have paper pages turning and to be enjoyed at that physical level.'Picnic at Hanging Rock' by Joan Lindsay set near Mt Macedon, Victoria, Australia was a favorite, as was the 'God of Small Things' by Arundhati Roy set in Kerala in Southern India. My issue with reading Literary Places by Sarah Baxter with captivating illustrations by Amy Grimes via my electronic reader is that I feel like I’ve missed out a bit on something magical that an e-reader can only minimally convey. First off, Amy Grimes’ illustrations fascinate me. At first glance, they look minimalistic, but there’s something about them, some magical quality that makes me want to continue looking at them.These illustrations offer a viewpoint of Sarah Baxter’s frequently poetic descriptions of novel settings.“The Crescent’s honeyed stone glows in the afternoon sunlight, a radiant architectural swoosh between the neat green lawn and cloudless blue sky. A long procession of Ionic columns and sash windows sweeps away in perfect symmetry, while the footsteps of the slowly strolling curious–faces up-turned, mouths agape–slap on worn-smooth slabs.”Bath, the setting for Northanger Abbey and PersuasionThe “places” referred to in the title range from the Paris of Les Miserables to Chile from The House of Spirits with stops in Kabul (The Kite Runner) and the Mississippi River (Adventures of Huckleberry Finn).Literary Places is not the kind of book that you would want to read in one sitting. I would read one or two entries, savor them, imagine the places as they once were as they are now, before moving on.The passages also lend themselves extremely well to giving a taste of novels that haven’t been read yet, which I found, in my case, to be far too many than I would have liked. However, if you’ve read the novel, the present-day descriptions of the settings may just result in your wanting to enjoy them yourself in person.I received an ARC from Netgalley and the Quarto Group in exchange for an honest review.

Well I’ve got to say, I was intrigued by this book, and for some reason I thought I was a lot more well read than I obviously am. Out of the 25 books covered in this literary travel guide, I have only actually read 5 of the books and watched a further 3 on the big screen, not quite as literate as I presumed I was. Some I hadn’t even heard of, but do you know what? I’m going to be downloading some of these literary masterpieces very shortly. Interesting facts about the authors and their stories, beautiful illustrations, although I know some may disagree, I would have loved to have seen actual photographs alongside some of the illustrations. What can I say, I’m a visual person, and8 must say, I adored the illustrated maps. So many backstories, so many countries to visit, so many stories to read. Interesting, factual and informative. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest opinion.

This is a wonderful, thought-provoking book. It's short, but I like a book that says what needs to be said without a lot of extra fluff. I run a Yoga Teacher Training program and I plan to add this to my required reading list. You definitely need to read the Gita and Sutras (and the author tells you this up front), but after you've read them, come back to this book. I can also see this as a good resource for Yoga workshops (not just teacher trainings) or for individuals looking to better their understanding of Yoga.

As a beginning yoga student, I have been focused on positions and breathing. Beyer-Nelson provides a thought-provoking entry into the principles behind yoga. This is not a book for readers looking for instructions on poses. Instead, it moves the reader beyond to consider his/her mind state and how the body and mind work together to restore peace and health. The poetry is an added bonus. I'll come back to this book to deepen my awareness.

An easy read with a simple and approachable perspective on Yoga's two great masterful works.

I read Easing into the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali Yoga Sutras last year when it was first published. Now I have the audio version narrated by Jack Nolan and I've listened to it as I followed along in the book. His voice has a good pace and expression as he narrated. It's like reading it again but at a slower more gentle pace. I especially liked his reading when he came to the poetry sections.

This book is both inspiring and practical. As spiritual seekers, there is a temptation to reach out for more and more teachings to perhaps find those magical words that will set us free. While this may be useful in the beginning, there comes a time for actually putting the teachings to work in our lives where the magic can make a difference in our understanding. The format for this lovely volume provides exercises and suggestions for applying these ancient teachings in our everyday lives and finding how fully alive and transformative they still are. Thank you Ms. Beyer-Nelson.

Born in England and now living in Wyoming, Fuller was conceived and bred on African soil during the Rhodesian civil war (1971-1979), a world where children over five "learn[ed] how to load an FN rifle magazine, strip and clean all the guns in the house, and ultimately, shoot-to-kill." With a unique and subtle sensitivity to racial issues, Fuller describes her parents' racism and the wartime relationships between blacks and whites through a child's watchful eyes. Curfews and war, mosquitoes, land mines, ambushes and "an abundance of leopards" are the stuff of this childhood. "Dad has to go out into the bush... and find terrorists and fight them"; Mum saves the family from an Egyptian spitting cobra; they both fight "to keep one country in Africa white-run." The "A" schools ("with the best teachers and facilities") are for white children; "B" schools serve "children who are neither black nor white"; and "C" schools are for black children. Fuller's world is marked by sudden, drastic changes: the farm is taken away for "land redistribution"; one term at school, five white students are "left in the boarding house... among two hundred African students"; three of her four siblings die in infancy; the family constantly sets up house in hostile, desolate environments as they move from Rhodesia to Zambia to Malawi and back to Zambia. But Fuller's remarkable affection for her parents (who are racists) and her homeland (brutal under white and black rule) shines through. This affection, in spite of its subjects' prominent flaws, reveals their humanity and allows the reader direct entry into her world. Adult/High School-Pining for Africa, Fuller's parents departed England in the early '70s while she was still a toddler. They knew well that their life as white farmers living in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia at the time) would be anything but glamorous. Living a crude, rural life, the author and her older sister contended with "itchy bums and worms and bites up their arms from fleas" and losing three siblings. Mum and Dad were freewheeling, free-drinking, and often careless. Yet they were made of tough stuff and there is little doubt of the affection among family members. On top of attempting to make a living, they faced natives who were trying to free themselves of British rule, and who were understandably not thrilled to see more white bwanas settling in. Fuller portrays bigotry (her own included), segregation, and deprivation. But judging by her vivid and effortless imagery, it is clear that the rich, pungent flora and fauna of Africa have settled deeply in her bones. Snapshots scattered throughout the book enhance the feeling of intimacy and adventure. A photo of the author's first day of boarding school seems ordinary enough- she's standing in front of the family's Land Rover, smiling with her mother and sister. Then the realization strikes that young Alexandra is holding an Uzi (which she had been trained to use) and the family car had been mine-proofed. The mum said it best: we’re all mad but I’m the only one with acertificate to prove it “I found the language in this book entertaining with many different expressions I hadn’t heard before such as “pecker up”.The author lives in Wyoming but loves loves loves Africa. Why? Beats me. The horrendous floods after the land first dries to a crisp, the snakes, hippos, lack of clean water and flushable toilets. Is it any wonder they’re all mad? They all start drinking beer at a young age so the get togethers are drunken parties and the parties go on for days. A result of not being able to drink the water perhaps?All in all I loved the book and learning about a curious lifestyle.

This is a revalation to me about the history and living conditions in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. The author's love of the land comes through so clearly in spite of all the hardships. Her family was so quirky and fun to know about but the sad undertones were always present. She seldom feels sorry for herself so I went along with her for the ride amazed at all the hardships they endured. The dichotomy of white superiority vs helping all who came along no matter who they were was revealing.

for the most part Alexandra Fuller writes a delightful account of her life growing up in Africa with a few years off in the UK. The one thing that keeps this book from getting five stars is that it was often hard to tell where she was in the story. It would be greatly helped if at the beginning of each chapter it said something like:Chapter titleBotswana1962age 12I've given the book to a friend so can't check what & where for the year/age but you get the idea.

This hauntingly beautiful and often humorous memoir about the author's Rhodesian childhood perfectly embodies that age-old mantra of our writing teachers, show, don't tell! It shows us everything: the striking beauty of the terrain, the landmines, the poverty, the violence, the vestiges of colonial life. She shows us the eccentricities of her parents, farmers whose combination of ethnocentrism and heartfelt humanitarianism are sure to befuddle we 21st century American readers with our predilection for putting people into distinct categories. She shows us this with stunning, evocative prose. And she doesn't tell us things. She doesn't politicize in either direction. She doesn't allow her narrative to be perforated with a million post-colonial caveats, admonitions and qualifications. She tells us neither that her parents were racist nor that they were saints. She doesn't editorialize about the legitimacy of her parents' love for Africa, or the fact that they considered it their rightful home. She simply shows us what her life was like in a way that makes a girl from a suburb of Los Angeles feel as though she were really there.The fact that Alexandra Fuller chooses "showing" over "telling" has led some readers to call this book "Anti-African" and others to call it "detached." Readers will take from it what they will, but I found it to be neither of these things. I found a memoir that renders a unique life in a unique time and place, with pathos, humor and eloquence.

I loved this book so much; the prose, the story. Very unusual and different from anything I've ever read. Such a fascinating upbringing and oddball family. Stunning descriptions and a great sense of place. I'd recommend this memoir to anyone. So glad it was a pick for my book club as I may not have thought of reading it otherwise.

I enjoyed the author's snappy style of writing and wanted to like this book, but sadly it ends there. Her attempts to paint a picture of life in Africa were creative but lacked depth. The one message the author succeeded to clearly communicate was that she and her family were seriously impaired marginally functional alcoholics who managed to maintain a continual state of drunken inebriation with the help of multitudes of hired Native African hands who essentially ran the household and farm on their behalf.

I have read all of Ms. Fuller's books and liked all of them. I have a family member (sister) who lived in Africa for 15 years in Nigeria and Congo. While I always enjoyed her tales of travel and the expat life I also saw the downfall of her through the years.It was sad. Alexandera's writings are sad. But she tells it like it was. I liked every word, every line. I have read parts of this book several times as I am so amazed at how young children can survive and learn and actually turn into such fascination , educated and well traveled people. But then that comes with their territory and their determination. Their exposures to the world away from the US certainly prepares them to have lived a full and interesting life. I am always struck by the stories they tell as told by their African staff and the love they have for each other as a family.I would recommend another book told along these lines: The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. Africa - Africa - Africa. Such stories to be told.

I have recently visited Zimbabwe and Zambia, and Bobo’s stories gave me a window into the lives of the settlers and the revolutions of the 1970s and ‘80s that I found fascinating. Her writing style took a little getting used to in the beginning, but once I got into the rhythm, the pace matched the details and excitement of the story being told. If you love the outdoors and had your own childhood adventures, as I did growing up in the same era (but in the U.S.), then you’ll really be able to relate to this descriptive tale of wide-open spaces and adventures.

I bought this because it is printed in colour and it is one of the recommended textbooks by our prostho lecturer.It is very thick and heavy. Content-wise, I'm surprised it didn't have any information on post and core. Overall, I am a bit disappointed...

Dated but good

A very elaborate informative and up to date book. Every one in the field of dentistry must have it. Probably the number one book in the field of Prosthodontics.

This book has great pictures and outlines different procedures well. additionally the summaries after each chapter make it a quick reference.

Needed for dental school. Eh, good book for what it is. A lot better to do it than read about it. I guess it is good for a required book, good source of info.

Great reference book for Fixed Prosthodontics! It includes step-by-step instructions on many fixed prosthodontic restorations, including single casting, metal ceramic and all ceramic fixed dental prostheses'. It even includes a few Removable Prosthodontic techniques. Great Pictures as well. Highly recommended!

I frequently order items from Amazon.com. I have had very nice experience except this one.I ordered a textbook Contemporary Fixed Prosthodontics 4/c from the seller BTBDEALS, and I received a fake product. The book should be in color, but this one I received is a photo-copied black and white one. Some pictures, radiographs, and texts are faded or blurred, and hard to read. I requested a return immediately and ordered another one from Amozon from another seller.When I went to the Post Office for returning the faked book by using the return label, the postage would be at least $75, slightly more than the money I paid for buying it. The odd thing was I had to return it to India, even though it was shipped from Jamaica, New York. Since I had to pay for the postage, I didn't mail it to India.I feel very frustrated with all the money, time, and energy I spent on this ordering.

Received in great time, and it was described as noted! I will surely do business again and look forward to my next book!
