Kosher Chinese, by Michael Levy

From Publishers Weekly

In this lively memoir of serving in the Peace Corps in Guiyang, China, Levy explores a society in flux—while mining the entertaining if familiar terrain of cross-cultural misunderstandings. He struggles to explain English terminology to students who unknowingly translate their names into expletives, is coerced into eating the specialty at Dog Meat King, and finds that the community distrusts him not merely because he is American, but because he is Jewish. But Levy turns his perceived otherness to his advantage, earning the nickname "Friendship Jew" and being tapped to lead a student organization, the Guizhou University Jewish Friday Night English and Cooking Corner Club, a rare extracurricular activity in a culture Levy finds devoid of such opportunities. "There were no glee clubs, school newspapers, yearbooks... expressions of creativity were mere distractions, as was critical thinking." Pop culture references abound: Sex and the City, Star Wars, The Matrix are all name checked as if to suggest that Levy is grasping for familiarity in a foreign land, but their ubiquity becomes tiresome. Humor works best when Levy uses them to point to matters of deeper significance, such as the Westernization of China. As one of the local teachers encapsulates it, "Wal-Mart is the future, and Chairman Mao is the past." Interested readers would do well to check out Peter Hessler's Peace Corps memoir, River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze. (July) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Review

“A funny and informative account of life in Guizhou province, deep in the heart of China. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Michael Levy came to know and love a part of the country that few visitors see, a world away from Beijing and Shanghai.” ―Peter Hessler, author of River Town and Oracle Bones“As a Peace Corps volunteer, Michael Levy taught for two years in a corner of China overlooked by tourists and correspondents. Kosher Chinese is a heartfelt, engaging memoir that captures at once the poignancy and humor of daily life in the new China. Levy's narrative balances his own acclimation to China with his students' acclimation to university life, and independence. This is what it feels like to be immersed behind the headlines--for Levy, it came to feel like home.” ―Michael Meyer, author of The Last Days of Old Beijing: Life in the Vanishing Backstreets of a City Transformed“Michael Levy is the tour guide to the real China we all long for. Funny, insightful, full of warmth and wit, Kosher Chinese brims with interesting characters and scenes, and it marks the debut of a fresh new voice in American writing.” ―Bruce Feiler, author of Walking the Bible and The Council of Dads“With intelligence and zesty good humor, Levy tells the story of his sojourn as an ESL teacher in Guiyang… A rollicking, thoroughly refreshing debut.” ―Kirkus“As in Peter Hessler's River Town…and Peter J. Vernezze's Socrates in Sichuan…, Peace Corps experience is the inspiration for Levy's cheekier and freewheeling but insightful adventure story.” ―Library Journal

Michael Levy's "Kosher Chinese" came recommended by a cheerful bibliophile who runs a great restaurant. The cover looked like a big sushi with a picture of Mao on it. At the incredibly low price of a used book, why not?Readers, this is not a cookbook and that sushi is a yarmulka of an Orthodox Jew with a picture of Mao on it, the black seaweed wrapping actually Michael Levy's hair. This narrative of a 29 year old ESL/literature teacher's two years in China as a Peace Corps volunteer has plenty about eating, the alimentary canal, food and cuisine. These are incidental, compared to what else "Kosher Chinese" covers. The book is more concerned with friendships, the fiddler-on-the-roof quality of respecting an ancient, complex culture while "representing" the United States, and the dilemnas facing many us, wherever we live, when our reach exceeds our grasp however good our intentions.Levy is a fine writer and a man who goes with the flow. For example, his colleagues at the University in Guiyang initiate a Friday Shabbos, 'with Chinese characteristics.' In search of cheese for a pizza to be served by popular demand, Mike and his Chene colleague Jennifer pass through a meat market that leaves him queasy:"We listened to music until my stomach was completely settled and then entered the restaurant supply store. Towards the back, tucked into a corner, was a freezer. Inside the freezer were bricks of long-frozen cheese. I pulled out a two-foot long, twenty-five pound bag of frozen parmesan, feeling like Oliver Twist. It would be enough cheese for a year. "Now you can cook us pizza for Shabbat!" Jennifer was twitching with excitement...." (p.92)."Kosher Chinese" could be in itself, almost, a validation of relevance of the Peace Corps in the spinning political-economic globe of today. Even more, it is a reminder that way down deep,as well as close to the surface, the world has many caring, compassionate people who with humor, determination, and skill are themselves the bridges we need built----while having themselves & giving to others one heckuva memorable experience, composed of moments---like the picnic with the Wang sisters and the final basketball game---great and small.Any reader alerts? Remember this is a narrative story, not an analytic tale. It is produced as a basic book. There is no index, no maps, no heavy-weight paper, no photographs----and no recipes. For those, readers would need to select from among the five Chinese Kosher cookbooks liberally available through Amazon.Highly recommended for a page-turning read that nourishes mind and spirit. Write on, Mike Levy, and may the force be with you!

I have taught two semesters of university sophomore English in Shandong Province. My experiences paralleled the author's. It was refreshing (not to mention validating) to have someone else's take on life as an American teacher in China.Levy's book is gently written with self-deprecating good humor. The affection that grew for his Chinese students and friends over the two years that he taught is sensitively portrayed.Anyone would enjoy and benefit from reading this account of Peace Corp work in a provincial Chinese city. It makes sense of Chinese thoughts and customs that otherwise are baffling to the average Westerner.

Entertaining, page turner with a lot of heart and insights into the differences and similarities between cultures. I especially loved the author's treatment of the Wang sisters. I wanted to know what happens to each of the people he comes across, you care for their outcomes. He is able to build a real caring for his students and community he builds in China.

Michael Levy made me appreciate my toilet. His memoir, Kosher Chinese, is a comedic tale of when he, as a young peace corps volunteer from Philadelphia is placed in rural and mountainous Guiyang, China, and navigates his way through a new culture, strange foods and his teaching job at the local university -- all while maintaining his Jewish values. He sums up his first minutes in his new home by writing about the airport bathrooms. He describes singing Country Roads while waiting on the bathroom line, then gives a detailed explanation of his experience with a Chinese squat toilet. The characters in the book steal the show. No one can forget Big Twin and little Twin along with Cousin Wang, the teenage girls Mike (as everyone calls him in the book) meets who keep him updated information about Chinese Pop-culture. Vivian, his new found friend and local teacher, who, when asked about communism, says, "Walmart is the future, and Chairman Mao is the past." Kosher Chinese puts a unique twist on the classic fish-out-of-water story. Mike, to his students, is the wisest authority in any subjects, not just English. If any of his students need romantic advice, they go to him. They also ask many questions about America. He is also pulled into an educator in the Jewish religion to all who join the Jewish Friday Night English and Cooking Corner Club for his students that want to learn more about Judaism (that he was amicably forced into starting). They cook kosher foods and talk about the differences between America and China and practice speaking to one an other in their foreign language. I found myself talking out loud to the characters in the book warning them not to "go in the closet".Kosher Chinese has factual and historical information woven into a comical memoir. You learn about some views on communist China while also reading about his long journey to find cheese in his city so you don't feel like you're researching China or being recruited for the Peace Corps. The story is unique enough to China that you appreciate than antics that go on, but also a little universal so connections can be made with all walks of life. This book is for young adults and adults. You don't even have to know anything about China. (I knew barely anything except for what I heard from the media and all around me.) Though many people can enjoy it, it is particularly funny if you are associated with Judaism, as the author gives many jokes relating to the religion. I implore you to read this book. This novel goes beyond the superficiality of "serving the less fortunate" and gives a real and zany account of living in a strange place and having to adapt to a new culture and way of life. Kosher Chinese is a cut above the rest.

This book was well written and provided much detail about an American living in a rural part of China. I didn't want the two year teaching term the author was assigned and, therefore the book, to end! Throughout the story, the author develops the other characters, as well as himself, and makes the reader want to know what happens to everyone involved.

I ordered this book at the urging of my 11 year old grandson. We share a love of sports and reading so this was an experience we could share and discuss. I loved it! He now has a summer reading list for this 61 year old Gigi to share!list for me and I look forward to many lively discussions

As a 13 year old, athletic boy, I loved this book. It really shows how much a person can go through just to help another. I don't like reading or books, but this book was great. It had a fantastic storyline, and good scenes you could easily imagine

I loved this book! Unfortunately, my dog did too, so I had to buy a replacement copy right away.

This book was well written. I thought that Molly never gave up trying to make Josh Cameron believe that she was his daughter. It was a little sad because Josh Cameron wasn't believing Molly that she was his daughter. Also because Molly's mom Jen Parker died and she had no family left. She didn't even know that Josh Cameron was her father. She was living with her mom's friends family the Evans. Molly doesn't really like living with the Evans. The Evans are also moving to Los Angeles. So Molly is time limited to make Josh believe that she is his daughter.

Good, solid characters and a heartwarming ending. Why this has not become a network Hallmark Hall of Fame movie (story is better than most Hallmark Channel movies) is beyond me. It would be a perfect holiday family movie.

Excellent book.well read in our library. Very popular

My son loves Mike Lupica Books!

I first read this book when I was in the third grade, 25 years ago. I instantly decided then that it was my favorite book and I read and re-read it many times. I loved it. I recently took on a research project involving children's and young adult stories and have a long reading list of Children's stories to read - I put "The Witches" at the top of my list for nostalgia's sake, not sure what to expect. As an adult, I can report, that it is simply a magnificent story. I can see why I loved it so much as a child. Dahl never dismisses the reader (children) as being inept. Like the Grandmother in the story, Dahl knows children don't require extreme coddling. He's not timid about using fear to tell a great story.Parent's strive to create a safe world for their children. But that illusion is one that all parents must slowly deconstruct to prepare children for reality. Fairy tales are an integral part of that deconstruction. In fairy tales, monsters can exist in a way that allows children face their fears and walk through those fears to the other side where strength, courage and confidence are found."The Witches" is a frightening, yet thrilling read for children. Dahl is a masterful storyteller and in "The Witches" he has weaved imagination, fear and courage into a fantastically fun story that has stood the test of time and remains refreshingly relevant for each generation.

Any full-length novel by Roald Dahl (we've read almost all of them) is going to be excellent, a mixture of zaniness, intelligence, and wonder. Here we have the familiar contrast of appalling or even evil adults alongside much friendlier and more sympathetic ones, with the hapless child thrown into weird and frightening situations and bravely plunging in.

Grandmother tells her grandson how to recognize a witch, what he should do if he sees one, how he can avoid being taken by a witch. The grandson listens carefully and keeps watch. She almost makes me believe there are witches. The grandson does have an encounter with not one witch but an entire conference room full of them. He is turned into a mouse. He is a clever boy and is able to escape. Instead of being depressed that he is now a mouse, he and grandma hatch a plan to put the witches out of business for good. He is the one with the ideas and Grandma is always amazed at his cleverness and helps him carry out his plan.Another boy was also changed into a mouse. His parents are disgusted by him now that he is a mouse. Grandma is very sad that his parents don't love him just because he's a mouse. But Grandma continues to be loving and considerate. She re arranges the house so her grandson/mouse can be safe and independent. She carries him in her purse when they go out. The adventure with the witches is funny and clever but the real story was in the tenderness between Grandmother and Grandson. As the boy/mouse considers his new reality he asks her how long a mouse would live. She is honest as well as hopeful. A mouse does not live as long as a boy would. But he isn't an ordinary mouse so he will live longer than an ordinary mouse.I liked Roald Dahl before but this book sealed him as one of my favorite authors.

Dark but the droll humor comes through. As with all his books, children appear to be victims and become heroes. Some allusions to nursery rhymes and funny visuals of the witches themselves. As an adult, I loved it and children will devour the fast paced altercations and descriptive language.

Seriously miffed at this publication. DO NOT ORDER BOOK IS MISSING SEVERAL CHAPTERS AND HAS DUPLICATE CHAPTERS. THIS IS SOME BULL HOCKY. I got this book for my 7 year old as she loves to read and enjoyed the movie with me. Imagine her dissapointment when shw noticed missong chapters😡 not to mention this was supposed to be apart of summer reading. Now i have to find something new

Dahl at his best. Reading in 2018 and post-Harry Potter, I did find it was a little negative on women being the only witches. Why not warlocks? But that's cultural PC crap intruding into my brain - I'd prefer to push it out. The book is great. I'd say 8+ is ideal.

Scary story of a little boy and his grandmama off on vacation at a seaside resort that is also hosting a convention of English witches, the really bad kind. They intend to turn all the English children into mice and kill them. The boy and grandmama have to team up to thwart the witches evil intentions.

My kids could not get into this book. I read a lot of it to them, and they just didn't find it very interesting. I guess they have read a lot of well-written books aimed at their age level (2nd and 3rd grade). They didn't even want to finish it.
