Review

"Makes for intriguing reading … mostly because its author has been instrumental in framing how corporate responsibility is understood … "One of the biggest risks faced by companies is that everyone starts thinking the same," Moody-Stuart concludes. His book marks a valiant attempt to avoid that trap. The conclusions won't re-write the rules of corporate capitalism – nor will they remove the risk of more anni horribiles in the future. But, if the book persuades his fellow corporate insiders to look outside their shells, then it should edge forward the debate." - Oliver Balch, Guardian Sustainable Business "It is hard to imagine a better guide… by raising the issues, and with a perspective based on experience, Moody-Stuart’s book provides an invaluable source of wisdom on how to grapple with them." - Financial Times - Ed Crooks "Makes for intriguing reading … mostly because its author has been instrumental in framing how corporate responsibility is understood …" - Oliver Balch, Guardian Sustainable Business "... the most meaningful and revealing insights on sustainability ever written by a corporate executive." - Crosslands Bulletin

I took the opportunity of some holiday downtime in Borneo to read Responsible Leadership by Sir Mark Moody-Stuart - which seemed quite appropriate given a large chunk of the book is drawn on his experiences of working for Shell in the region……Brunei and in Kuala Lumpur. However Sir Mark draws on an incredible breadth of experience primarily in the oil and gas sector that has seen him live and work in senior roles all across the world. A core part of the book compares and contrasts his experience of leadership positions within Shell in Malaysia, Nigeria and Oman and how the local context and role of Government has a profound effect on the company’s impact on the economic development of the country – in Malaysia and Oman largely positive, in Nigeria less so!This is no ego driven auto-biography nor a one-sided view of a free-market fundamentalist who sees business as a panacea for the world’s problems. Instead it is a thoughtful and often self-deprecating critique with wisdom synthesized from a very successful 50 year career, particularly the last 20 years which saw him lead two global giants – Shell and Anglo American and sit on the Boards of many others including Accenture and HSBC. His own successes, failures and reflections on the power and limitations of private sector are shared openly and he draws out lessons learned and how his own views have evolved over time. The books spans issues ranging from endemic corruption and dealing with Heads of State in somewhat unsavory regimes through to the challenges of rising inequality and how to address the negative impacts of climate change. At a stage in his life and career where he appears largely free of vested interests or agendas, Sir Mark provides great insights with a candour that would be difficult for an existing CEO to give. As such, his reflections would be highly relevant to such incumbents who find themselves at the top of large public companies in an increasing volatile and complex world. But the book is equally relevant to more junior levels of management of or to today’s cadre of MBA students who will have to learn to manage in a world where decisions are rarely black or white, right or wrong, but instead highly nuanced and context specific.I had high expectations of this book and it did not disappoint. Sir Mark is one of a small handful of my personal “business heros” who have laid the foundations for sustainable and responsible leadership that a growing number of today’s CEOs are starting to emulate. His contribution to the sustainable and responsible business cause has been immense and through this book, is clearly ongoing. I would commend it to anyone who aspires to a leadership role in any organization, be it business, government or civil society.

Whereas the idea of 'responsible leadership' has gained much traction in recent years, this account of it is not coming from the classroom, but from the trenches. The book goes beyond theory and represents the story of someone who has led business and other institutions with wisdom, discernment and moral integrity in the face of difficult challenges and in the context of tough industries such as oil and minerals. In talking about ethics, responsibility and sustainability as leadership imperatives, this is a book makes you realise that responsible leadership "is easier said than done". Mark Moody-Stuart is a humble man and so is the book an authentic account of a servant of the common good.

Inspirational work.I'm looking forward to MMS writing about his personal experiences living and working in the most amazing places in the world.

A must book to read for people in business, government ,academics, and the general public that care about how responsible leadership hould be and can be. Mark brings to the table a world of knowledge that he shares in a way that by the end of the book you have made a good friend. I thank Mark for writing this book. T. H.

Few companies have been through the sustainability wringer to quite the same degree as Royal Dutch/Shell. According to Mark Moody-Stuart, Shell's annus horribilis came in 1995, in the middle of his decade-long tenure as managing director, when the company was hit hard on two fronts. These were the Brent Spar oil platform controversy in Europe and the outrage that followed Nigeria's execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and his colleagues.Moody-Stuart's Responsible Leadership: Lessons from the Front Line of Sustainability and Ethics, which he bills as "part memoir, part confessional, part manifesto for leadership," provides a detailed view of these events and much more. It draws mainly on the author's 40-year career at Shell. Moody-Stuart grew up in Antigua, where his family had lived since the 17th century and was instrumental in the development of the island's sugar industry. He joined Shell in 1966 after earning his doctorate in geology at Cambridge, and worked for the company in 10 countries on his journey to becoming its managing director and chairman--posts he held until 2001.The book, which bears my endorsement on its dust jacket, provides candid accounts of Moody-Stuart's dealings with prime ministers and dictators, colleagues and competitors, and investors and NGOs. This is an insider's view of the machinations within organizations as disparate as Shell and the United Nations, and it engages hot-button issues, such as top team remuneration, human rights abuses, and corruption, head-on.But Moody-Stuart delays his account of how he awoke to the corporate sustainability agenda until the book's biographical coda. The key moment was when he first became chairman of a public company, the Shell refining company in Port Dickson, Malaysia, and attended his first shareholder meeting--the company was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. This is when he fully recognized his responsibility to the thousands of people who had invested their savings in the company he led. What is most striking about Moody-Stuart is how this newfound sense of responsibility to shareholders continually expanded until it encompassed all of the stakeholders in a business, producing one of the wisest leaders I have ever come across. The themes of trust and inclusion ring through the book--not just as values to be adopted, but as core leadership attributes to be developed and exercised. Moody-Stuart calls on business leaders to "take off the `corporate hat' and put on the `citizen hat.'" This ability is key to building the trust needed to successfully manage the kind of coordinated action necessary in addressing global issues. Although the book is not a detailed primer on how to work for the common good, it contains many forceful recommendations, with the weight of experience behind them. For example, the best way to build the trust needed for cooperation with the not-for-profits of civil society is exceptional transparency. The author tells us that he and Royal Dutch/Shell learned that lesson the hard way in 1995.Moody-Stuart extends the need for transparency and inclusion into his views on regulation. "Business people should support sensible regulatory frameworks instead of instinctively arguing against all forms of regulation," he says, adding that even though business should be involved in framing sensible legislation, "to prevent special pleading it is advisable to have input from other business sectors as well as civil society."Trust and inclusion are also essential to dealing with climate change, a critical issue that emerged during Moody-Stuart's tenure at Shell and one that is covered in a key chapter in the book. The gist of the former oilman's argument is that whereas business, government, and consumers have all been prone to blaming each other, the situation now calls for a "three-cornered approach" that enlists all three in the achievement of low-carbon outcomes. For such an approach to work, argues Moody-Stuart, two conditions must be met: First, the solutions--alternative transportation and energy--that business espouses must provide consumers with levels of utility and cost that are similar to those of conventional solutions. The author believes this will translate to "significant investment in public transport, particularly urban public transport, and work on low-carbon vehicles."Second, a "broad regulatory framework driving efficiency...as well as a framework to establish carbon cap and trade schemes" will be needed that, in essence, place the onus for action on business. "This is a case where the market on its own will not deliver solutions," argues Moody-Stuart, eschewing price-driven solutions--such as gasoline taxes--for their unintended side effects. The framework he proposes would include "building regulations, transport efficiency standards, industry-sector efficiency standards, and so on."Almost as an afterthought, the author adds a third condition: "that the creativity of the market is necessary to find solutions, to provide choice, and to guide the allocation of resources." He does not elaborate on this condition, but clearly he has faith that business can deliver on it.There's an interesting footnote in this chapter: Moody-Stuart says that he often discussed environmental issues with John Browne, then CEO of BP--in the days before the Deepwater Horizon disaster. (For more on Browne and BP, and insight into responsible leadership at the middle management level, see Christine Bader's The Evolution of a Corporate Idealist: When Girl Meets Oil [Bibliomotion, 2014], a fine book that just missed my final cut.) For example, Moody-Stuart and Browne discussed resigning from the Global Climate Coalition, an industry-supported group with the express aim of lobbying against any action on climate change. And both companies did resign, because "NGOs regarded such membership as hypocritical and criticised both Shell and BP."Many activists argue that such discussions among senior corporate leaders usually end up in collusion to protect the unsustainable status quo. But in a time when sustainable solutions often require broad-based cooperation, we should encourage those discussions because they also can ensure that the leaders mired in the established paradigm do not drown out those who see the need for change.

In addition to illuminating a fascinating area of scientific research - the co-evolution of dogs and humans - this book adds important understanding to dog training. All dog trainers should read it.Brian Hare explains the major shortcomings of both of the two leading models of dog training: "leader-of-the-pack" (dominance training), and "operant conditioning" (mislabeled as clicker training). He points out that dominance training is based on scientifically inaccurate assumptions about how dogs relate to humans; while operant conditioning intentionally ignores dog's unique cognitive processes (ways of thinking).Dogs evolved from wolves by refocusing their social skills and affection towards humans, Hare explains. For example, they can learn hundreds of human words using many of the same mental processes that a human infant does. And can learn by copying humans and inferring communication signals from human gestures such as pointing. Operant conditioning does not accommodate these capacities, so it misses a major opportunity to train from dog's strengths.A major take-home training lesson for me from this book was Hare's point that, as social animals, dogs are not very good at trial-and-error learning. They do much better when shown a technique through social interaction. This runs counter to a major tenet of operant conditioning: let the animal flounder around until, by chance, it discovers the desired behavior. This is called 'shaping' in the operant conditioning lingo, and Hare convincingly explodes this tenet. Gurus of operant conditioning advise that you wait around until your dog hits on the right behavior, then 'shape' that with a reward through stepwise trials-and-errors towards the desired behavior. It is a tedious procedure, frustrating for both dog and owner. And lacks any scientific foundation. It appears to have been co-opted from rat (BF Skinner) and dolphin (Karen Pryor) training, where it is not practical to actually show the animal the desired behavior, so trial-and-error is the only option. Trial-and-error may be fine and the only alternative for rats and dolphins, but why design a dog training program around one of dog's weaknesses? Much better to train to their strengths - their ability to learn from others, especially their humans. Social learning: dogs are brilliant at it, Hare explains, with solid science behind him.And what about dog's inherent cognitive weaknesses? Rather than pound your head against a wall and drive yourself and your dog into chronic anxiety, Hare asks that we recognize that such weaknesses actually do exist and are inherent, and when training doesn't work it actually may not be your fault, contrary to what many operant trainers insist. Thank you Brian Hare from freeing us from the guilt-tripping that has unfortunately become inscribed into operant conditioning as evangelized by leading dog trainers. The book is well worth the purchase price just for this single, valuable insight. Train to your dog's strengths, find other ways to manage their untrainable weaknesses. Hare gives the example of incessant barking - training may not solve hormonally-based behaviors like this. Better look to medical alternatives such as castration. Similarly for many dog 'problems', training may not be able to overcome biology. Aggression, leash-pulling, hunting... don't just assume you're a bad trainer. Instead, understand your dog's cognitive profile (Hare offers an online test for that). Will the future bring gene and hormone therapy for dogs? It could save their lives. There are also some shortcomings in the book that limited it to four rather than five stars for me:In explaining dog evolution, Hare asserts that only dogs and bears survived the expansion of humans into Europe. All other large predators were killed off. He fails to mention house cats. Maybe they weren't large enough? Seems a trivial reason to leave them out. So much could be learned. I find the absence of any discussion of domesticated cats in a book about predator domestication and the ecological evolution of the human-pet relationship, to be utterly baffling. What better species to compare dog domestication to, both for the convergent-evolution similarities, and for the contrasting differences?Hare's cognitive profiles of dogs leave out the single most important cognitive trait from a trainer's perspective: what the English call 'biddability', or Americans call 'will-to-please.' Why do some dogs inherently have a laser-like focus on their owners, while others pay only passing, occasional, unpredictable attention to their owners? Presumably, there is a genetic aspect to this. A discussion of will-to-please would have been extremely valuable.Hare downplays genetic differences between dog breeds based on the argument that their DNA is 99% identical. Thats not a convincing argument when anyone can readily observe the huge behavioral differences that exist between a Border Collie vs a Labrador vs a Beagle. Genes differ in their importance; oversimplified DNA arithmetic is not a sufficient explanation of these differences, let alone a reason to pretend they don't exist.Hare could have done a better job at explaining dog operant conditioning than by labeling it as 'clicker training.' That's like labeling the practice of fishing, as 'rod holding.' The clicker, like the fishing rod, is just a tool. He also presents dog cognitive training as an alternative to operant conditioning, whereas it appears more logically as an extension of it. Operant conditioning is still a powerful and effective training method when it is in synch with a dog's cognitive abilities. It is when we want to train something that is not a match for a particular dog's cognitive abilities, that operant conditioning runs into trouble.Hare says nothing about the formation of habits. Operant conditioning acts to build almost addictive performance in dogs. One can hypothesize that it triggers some releases of hormones in a dog's brain that motivate habitual performance of the desired behavior. In fact, this presumption is emphasized by most trainers who utilize operant conditioning. Susan Garrett calls it 'building value' for the behavior. After awhile the dog sees the behavior as a motivating reward in and of itself. I wish Brian Hare had given his take on this. Is habit-formation a strength of dogs that trainers can utilize?Bottom line: The Genius of Dogs highlights a whole new dimension to understanding dog behavior, while also being a fascinating account of how dogs evolved to become our best friends, viewed from the lens of science - a lens that is all too often missing in the dog training literature.

A superb book. Dogs have spent the last 14000 years getting better and better at reading humans, and anticipating those humans needs and providing assistance. Communication has been a one-way street with the dog doing all the work. "The Genius of Dogs" is a great first step at turning the tables. Hare and Woods have produced an excellent compilation of current dog research to which they have made a great contribution. The notes at the end cite over 600 recent and current dog intelligence and behavior studies. That is a quite valuable source of information. The Genius of the dog also brings some sanity to the popular conception of the wolf. As Hare and Woods point out, a wolf pack is a small family group which operates as a cooperative. It has little to do with dominant behavior and subordinate behavior. .This book is a great read and its assertions are well documented with science. I am a dog trainer of 50 years experience. When you say to me, "I love my dog," I say to you, "Your dog deserves no less than for you to read 'The Genius of Dogs'"

Although I grew up having dogs as pets, and always assuming my dogs were exceptionally smart, some years ago, I was amazed as my brother-in-law gave his dog an instruction on Thanksgiving day. The instruction was fairly involved, but the dog went and did it. So when I read an article in the Wall Street Journal about this book, having to do with "dognition" and the learning and personal relationships between dogs and humans, I bought it and read it. It goes beyond dog-human relationships, and includes insights into how humans also interact themselves. It is more technical a book than you might expect, and goes into quite a bit of detail, but it is an excellent book on how dogs and mankind have forged a bond that endures and grows deeper, largely through selective breeding, (not necessarily on the part of the humans) not through conditioning. It also provides insights into how dog "owners" can learn about their dogs' strengths, and how best to foster canine learning in their environment. It includes sections on conditioning/training, and the strengths and weaknesses of normal methods, and talks about how well dogs understand words that they hear. Quite fascinating, especially the parts on how dogs learn words and names of objects, and how they can use what they have learned to learn new names and group associations. I recommend this excellent book to anyone with a curiosity of how the world around them works, and how "dumb animals" aren't really dumb at all.

Having been looking for a book that would provide me with a thorough update of literature on dog cognition, I was very pleased with Brian Hare's offering. His writing, while reviewing scientific literature, is an easy and "comfortable" read. Decades ago I had taken animal behavior courses that focused on the Skinner school of operant conditioning, which essentially opined that all non-human animals had no capacity to interact with the environment around them other than through slow, trial-and-error learning or instinct. I recently became interested in learning how behavioral scientists and comparative psychologists have changed their viewpoint, particularly pertaining to dogs. I felt Hare provided a wonderful look at how dogs deal with the world around them, and what their true cognitive capability is. A very enjoyable read.

Ten year old loves the pockets and industrial look. Holds his Bible and Awana booklet together. No complaints.

Son loves his Bible cover, matches the Bible we bought for him. Material thin but so far holding up .

Great protection and looks very nice... in a man sort of way.

Not high quality by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I'm not sure it is worth $5, but the zipper hasn't broken yet.

Attractive well made love the outside snapping pockets!

Really like the design, will see if it holds up to use and abuse by a teenage boy.

Contains a quick course on book keeping and business accounting, if you don't need this then about 1/3 of the book is wasted.Reads like a text book and you must hunt for the items relative to the Quickbooks software..A good reference book to have next to the computer. If you are not familiar with accounting software then I would suggest taking a class or seminar. Learning from the beginning using this text would be difficult. I started using the software before I bought the book and didn't make too many errors.Using the book after using the software seemed easier.

I've actually stopped using the book as I get more familiar with the program, but can see myself getting stuck at some point and using it for a reference.Quickbooks is not the ideal program for all businesses, but I could not justify upgrading my current accounting program since they were sold to an Australian company and it would have been as expensive to upgrade as to switch. This is a good reference book for my "starting all over" project.

Great inclusive book. However, I did not find it very useful at all for troubleshooting. Also there are some parts of the book that are unnecessary for the purpose I feel most people would purchase the product. Be sure to take a close look at the table of contents before you buy to make sure it fits your needs.

This is a very comprehensive book for anyone, even newbies, to learn and be able to get around your Quickbooks software. It goes above and beyond what I thought it would be. Very happy with my purchase.

Just what I needed to get me started. It was not too technical and explained everything so I could understand it.Just missing more on Invoice system.

I love this book! It goes into so much detail. Understanding is not a problem if you have a general idea of systems and how they work.

I didn't understand most accounting terms but this book breaks it down so if you take your time and make a list of terms in chapter one then you can start to get the idea of accounting. I've played with Quickbooks before and was lost without knowing accounting language. I haven't read most of the book yet.

It has brought me up to speed on the program and has shown me applications I was not aware of.
