I'm giving this almanac 4 stars because I am comparing it to The Old Farmer's Almanac for kids (2014) which is clearly 5 stars, and the World Almanac for Kids 2014, which is 3 stars for me. (See my other reviews if you are interested in why I gave those ratings.)This almanac is more educational than the World Almanac for Kids, but slightly more focused on animals and such when compared to the Old Farmer's Almanac for Kids. I'll most likely purchase this one again, though, because when paired with the Old Farmer's one, there is nothing lacking as far as great and fun information that is highly educational, accompanied by many fun activities.Believe me, this is a great almanac and would most likely be rated 5 stars by me if I wasn't comparing it to the Old Farmer's one for kids. It's just that I believe it is slightly less interesting than the Old Farmer's one, but not by much. The National Geographic one is still highly readable, very well organized, and extremely educational. You can't go wrong buying this almanac.The World Almanac for Kids 2014 has too many pop culture references, which is one of the reasons I gave it 3 stars on the review I provided for it.

My kids absolutely love the annual National Geographic Kids almanacs. Every year they can't wait for the new one to come out. They pour over the pictures together. (The pictures are beautifully detailed and vibrant.) They also read and recall all kinds of interesting facts about things that they like to share with parents and grandparents.In an age of everything on the computer (which, of course, I'm using right now) I'm glad my kids haven't lost the art of curling up with an interesting magazine or a good book. I'm glad that National Geographic puts out something on paper that makes kids want to turn off the electronics and turn to a book!

My 7- year- old granddaughter and I ran across this book in a department store. I could tell she was really interested in it, but knew I could save several dollars by ordering it from Amazon, which I did right away. I had the book delivered in her name at her house. She was surprised and thrilled. She brought the book to my house that day, and we had loads of fun with it. Of course, she had to ask grandma every question in it to see how much I knew. This was great fun for both of us! The pictures are great. Lots of facts about science and geography, history, etc. If you have a curious child who wants to KNOW, this is a wonderful book!

I purchased this book for my son before we embarked on a 10 hour car ride. He has not stopped reading it since. This book is PACKED full of all sorts of cool factoids and information to keep young minds intrigued for hours. He learns so much from this book and loves to share all his new knowledge. He takes the book with him everywhere, and has been counting down the days until the 2015 Almanac comes out. I am so happy with this purchase that we keep buying it as gifts for other young readers. Don't pass this one up!

My boys (age 8) love this annual Almanac! It is filled with wonderful photos, great facts and fun puzzles. We also subscribe to the National Geographic Kids magazine so they are familiar with the format of the pages. Like most almanacs, the pages are quite 'busy' so if you are looking for a cleaner way to view information, this would not be for you. The knock knock jokes and riddles are a great addition as well! The boys like to whip these out and read in bed when they get up early on weekend mornings and we use them as part of our nightly reading routine. I highly recommend!

This kids almanac has a lot of good information in it, as well as great pictures / charts, that sparks the imagination and thoughts of my middle schooler. While not all-encompassing in terms of the level of knowledge delivered, it has led to further (unprompted) research and exploring – which is always better than sitting in front of a TV.If you’re looking for something that both entertains and educates, I would recommend this one.

Grew up watching/playing Aussie rules, but moved to America and started looking for anything that wasn't NFL "football". The 2014 NRL final between the Roosters and Bulldogs, with Sam Burgess playing with a busted face, sealed the deal for me and made me a committed rugby fan. So, basically, I'm a very new fan to rugby. I read this book as I was watching the second half of the ITM Cup season unfold and I was looking for more insights as to what I was seeing when I watched rugby. This is not the service this book is trying to provide. Fortunately, I am a history buff, so I went along for the ride with a good attitude. This is basically a history of rugby book, which is an outstanding concept. Rugby is a story that needs to be told. Now, if you are uninitiated or recently initiated, and NOT total Anglophile, you will get lost during major parts of this book. This book could have been MASSIVELY assisted by a few pages of maps. Richards tells a global story, a story of nations at times. Some maps would help! I would give 5 stars for this book if it had maps. Speaking to Richard's writing style, he has an avuncular, story-teller tone that he maintains throughout, quite pleasurable to read. His approach assumes you have some background in rugby, which is fine, probably most people who buy this book do. I can't imagine a rugby fan having a library without this book, but I would recommend it to a total novice. Other than no maps (which you can get around by looking places up online), I dinged this book 1 star because toward the end you get page after page of summaries of international rugby games that, I guess, were of some kind of importance.

This book gives us the history of Rugby Union, with mentions of Soccer football, Gaelic Football, U.S. Football, Rugby League and Aussie Rules when their history impacts the history of Union.We see the origin of Rugby Union and of soccer as each emerged from the myriad local rules popular in Great Britain in the Nineteenth Century. The story of the game's origin at one point in time at Rugby School, with one player given credit for the change, is debunked as being as silly as the story that a former Union general, Abner Doubleday, invented baseball out of nowhere in Cooperstown NY. Well, really it isn't _as_ silly. It turns out that the rules used at Rugby School _were_ the rules that various schools and clubs settled on when they decided that they were not going to play soccer. And the public (meaning private) schools such as Rugby School, are shown as being very influential in the spread of the game, as well as giving it such class-consciousness that one sometimes still sees in those longing for the good old says of the amateur game.Then we see the conflict that gave rise to Rugby League, a game that seems mid-way to U.S. football in some ways, although it was never played much over here. And we see the unintended consequence of the breakaway of the clubs that went to League: English Rugby Union was weakened, making it possible for Ireland, Scotland, wales and later on France and Italy to contest the Four, Five and finally Six Nations tournament that has been so instrumental in making Union popular.We see Australia, with three sets of rules, four counting soccer, weakened in comparison to New Zealand, where only League competes with Union. And we see that non-whites played Rugby in South Africa even before their liberation and the World Cup that came as if as a reward.All in all, it is a fascinating story and well-told. Just be advised that it does not include the most recent World Cup.

A very detailed history of the sport. At times I had to re-read sentences, due to Richard's writing style. I think he could have researched the US Olympic rugby teams more: it wasn't "basically a Stanford team." Santa Clara University and University of California were well represented on those two Olympic teams, as well as a Swathmore student. Other than that I thought that there could have been more written about the New Zealand tour to the British Isles in the fall/winter of 1972-73 and how they weren't as successful on that tour as they had been and have continued to be on other tours.

I am just getting into the book as I only read a bit before falling asleep. It appears enjoyable for myself andanyone interested in Rugby. But probably not for a non-fan of the game.

Excited for friend to read it as a gift. Special gift note was not included so quite disappointed since this was indeed a gift with no card or memo.

In the late 1930s Britain's Royal Air Force had, as it chief raison d'etre, the bombing of enemy civilians. The long-time leader of the RAF in the 1920s, Hugh Trenchard, championed the offensive bomber force over defensive forces. Shocked by the casualties of the First World War, Trenchard and civilian leaders like Winston Churchill hoped to shorten future conflicts by bombing population centers until the enemy civilians demanded an end to war; in short, a surrender. This bombing strategy was based on the scanty bombing experience in the First War, bombing in Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan in the early 1920s, and Trenchard's need to develop a unique air force strategy against the attempts of the Royal Army and Navy to absorb the infant RAF. And what if the enemy pursued a similar strategy against the British population? Trenchard wrote in 1923 that the enemy civilians "would probably squeal before we did." Given Churchill's early support for the RAF, it is surprising that he wrote in 1917 that "nothing we have learned of the capacity of the German population to endure suffering justifies us in assuming that they could be cowed into submission by [bombing raids] or indeed that they would not be rendered more desperately resolved by them." Nevertheless, RAF Bomber Command was to receive the larger portion of meager defense spending right down to 1939, one of the reasons why there were "so few" fighter planes to defend Britain in 1940. Not until 1944 could the RAF and American air forces apply the kind of destruction that Trenchard predicted in the early years of the RAF. This book is so good! Carol Blackburn covers a lot of different techniques and some that I already knew... well, she explains them in a way that makes more since than the way I was first shown. My only compliant about the work about is that the type is small which makes it difficult to read. This is not the author's fault, but the publishers and it makes me sad as anyone working in Polymer Clay needs this book, as it makes a wonderful reference book! It was recommended by one of my friends who works in polymer clay and I am so glad she recommended it. as it is as good as she said it would be!

This is the 3rd time that I bought this book. I used the first book so much that it was falling apart.The second book was lost during a move and now I am purchasing it again. It is the BEST book that I've found for everything to do with polymer clay. Don't let the name fool you. It isn't just for bead making. It covers so many techniques such as how to create faux stones/gems, wood, and coral. It also demonstrates the Skinner method and creating canes to name a few. What I like about it is there are lots of photos and step-by-step instructions. It was one of the first books that I used when I starting working with polymer clay, and it is now considered my polymer clay bible. I've found some books that were decent, but none have compared to this one. If you are new to using polymer clay, this is a definite must-have.

I found this a wonderful how to book on the techniques I want to make faux: Amber, turquoise, and many others. Also lots of general tips for a semi newbie like myself

Great book with so many pictures and instructions on bead making, from the different styles and shapes to different style techniques and faux gemstone techniques.The instructions are pretty easy and it really is a good catch all of the different things you can do with polymer clay. Its an older book but in no means obsolete!I would recommend this book highly for anyone new to polymer clay as it has easy stuff as well as more advanced techniques. It is also very easy to modify you own ideas to what is offered in the book, so it is very inspiring just to look at and come up with something that you would have not thought of before.

Wonderful book! If only there had been a "Look Inside" for it, I would have realized what a treasure it is and snapped it up long ago. As it is, I wasn't particularly attracted by the cover, and since I already had another great book on bead-making, I didn't think of buying this one until someone in the CITY-o-Clay group at Yahoo spoke well of it.It contains an extensive section on faux techniques, including wood, veined marble, leather, jade, silver, turquoise, lapis lazuli, ivory/bone, mother-of-pearl, abalone, bronze, amber, coral (had lots of fun making coral!), and easier ways than I had known up to now for making onyx, agate, and malachite. I especially enjoyed making the coral. There is also a section called "Bringing It All Together" that covers findings and threads, attaching findings, and designing with beads.This book is good even for complete beginners, but also holds inspiration for clayers beyond that stage. Just a few of the headings in the Materials and Techniques section: drilling, sanding, polishing, and varnishing/extrusions/coiled beads/mokume gane/mica shift/molding/color mixing/applique/inlay/transfers/caning/and Natasha beads (called "Rorshach beads" in this book--which is another great name for them)There are pictures of and directions for many unusual beads and although I had already learned most of the techniques described, I found a lot of useful tips and good ideas throughout the book and keep going back to it to remind myself of them and find more.If I were pressed to point out a fault, that is the lack of help in finding sources for tools, findings, and materials. A few "source" companies are mentioned in the credits at the back, but with no information beyond their URLs. Most books in this field have at least a page or two with the names and addresses/URLs of companies that sell the materials mentioned in the book, telling which company sells what. There is, however, a 2-page index to the book's contents; and on the last page you will find URLs for some helpful sites such as Glass Attic, Polymer Clay Central, and Polymer Clay Daily. Some of these contain forums, but Glass Attic is a sort of compendium of forum conversations on all aspects of polymer clay use, almost like an encyclopedia.So--no help finding tools and materials--but, ah well, nothing in life is perfect. This book is definitely worth having.

I bought this book on recommendation from other reviews here. Am I ever happy I did! This is definitely THE book for learning how to make faux effects! It happened that I had already been searching in vain for information on how to make imitation bone without having to purchase the product "Faux Bone", which is not within my budget. Lo and behold both imitation bone and ivory are in this book, and it looks real - as do the pearl, mother-of-pearl, abalone, coral, agate, jade, silver, gold, bronze, wood, turquoise, amber, lapis, etc. all appearing perfectly natural! The only effect that was not an exact facsimile was the malachite -- but with all those other delicious choices, who cares? But the book goes way beyond making fabulous fakes, the fantasy pieces are amazing, from wind-chimes to kaleidoscope! There are even pieces that look like blown glass. This whole book is just making my imagination go wild! There are techniques in this book that I have found nowhere else. Really, this book is a dream come true.If you are looking to find a book on using polymer clay and can only afford a single, all-purpose book, this is it. Buy it!

It is actually more detailed than I find useful in y healing work. Still it is facinating, a good background book and a source of knowlege that I read periodically in full.

I got the Bearded Dragon Care book for my Grand son, so he could better take care of BOB. I like BOB so much i ordered the equipment from Amazon (much cheaper than the pet store). I read the whole book and then got LIZ. Both Beardies are doing great. The book tells everything to take great care of your Bearded Dragon.

The book is informative but very poorly written and edited. Subheadings are on the bottom of one page and the information is on the next page. Proper spelling and grammar are both lacking.

I'm a little disappointed that there aren't pictures. The lack of illustrations is what will make me consult another book over this one for questions about my bearded dragon itself, like sexing or health questions. However, for more black & white facts, like the dragon's environmental setup, this book is great. It's a nice addition to a beardie library.

Bought this to use in my classroom. We have a Bearded Dragon named Lizzy, and the students love reading and learning how to care for her.
