Perhaps more than in any other century of Jewish history, the Jewish people of today are heavily divided over matters of faith, religious observance, and the best way to preserve Jewish continuity in an ever changing world. Modern values are contrasted against ancient narratives, and Jews of today are deeply concerned that the Judaism known and practiced for millenia is slowly diappearing for reasons often defined by one's own perspective on the issues. Jews on the right feel that Judaism must become even more strict in its adherence to ancient customs and rabbinic law if Judaism is to survive. Jews on the left say that ancient customs stifle the true worth of Judaism, which are its moral values, while blind adherence to the ritual customs and ancient laws of Jewish religion turn Jews away from Judaism itself.Many orthodox Jews, in effect, think that Progressive Judaism is kind of an anti-Judaism, and that progressive Jews have no sense or respect for Jewish history or Jewish law whose ultimate end will be the disappearance of authentic Judaism all together. Sadly enough, many progressive Jews also believe that what defines progressive Judaism is a rejection of ancient rabbinic law. Some progressive Jews go even further and believe that the Reform movement was founded on a complete rejection of Jewish law. In other words, Reform Judaism is movement that seeks to erase the importance of historic Jewish law in Jewish practice. However, the true brilliance and worth of this book challenges such ignorant thinking about modern progressive Jewish religion. It sets the record straight for both progressive and traditional leaning Jews that Reform Judaism actively engages the historic Jewish law through the process of reforming Judaism by the proces of the law itself.What the liberal or traditional leaning reader might find interesting in this book is just how seriously the leaders of the Reform movement took the traditional religious sources of Judaism in formulating practices for a progressive Jewish religious movement. The early, and contemporary, Reform leaders were careful to consider the impact of their statements regarding Jewish relgion on all of Jewish life in America and the world. Although some in the Jewish world believe that Reform leaders changed Jewish law and practice simply as a foil to the blind obedience of what progressives see as an unenlightened orthodoxy, this book shows that the developers of Reform Judaism carefully involved the canon and process of traditional Jewish law in their decision making processes. To progressive Reform Jewish leaders, the traditional laws of Judaism are not dead or irrelevant, but they are extremely important in shaping modern progressive Judaism, and the Reform movement sees these progressives practices as not outside of Jewish law, but as the continuation of Jewish law that began thousands of years ago.This book comunicates to its readers that although progressive Reform Judaism may arrive at a drastically different interpretation of Jewish practice from an "orthodox" point of view, Reform and Orthodox Jews commonly share a serious concern to engage the sacred tradition in forming Jewish religious life for the current generation. Again, more right leaning Jews may argue that progressive Reform Jews are coming to "wrong" conclusions from the tradition and the law. However, this book shows that one cannot say progressive Judaism simply disregards the importance of the role traditional Jewish law plays in progressive Jewish life.All in all, this book is an excellent read for anyone with an amateur or intermediate understanding of Jewish religion that still wants to learn more. This book clearly conveys the current practices, and basis therefrom, of Reform Judaism, while paying equal respect to the technical and historical sources of Jewish religion. I would add that this book contains a remarkable source of information for anyone interested in joining the Jewish people through any of the current movements of Judaism, and this book should be a must-read for everyone discerning whether or not to call progressive, or Reform, Judaism home. The modern Jew, progressive or traditional, will benefit from the information on how and why Reform Judaism takes the positions it does today in regard to Jewish religious practice. This book may not convince any Jew, non-Jew, or soon to be Jew to adopt a Reform/progressive Jewish way of life, but it will undoubtedly add a depth of perspective to any person who seeks to better understand the thought and practice of one of Judaism's most important organized movements in modern times. It will correct some of the misconceptions that many Jews outside of Reform Judaism have, and, sadly enough, even some misconceptions of those inside of it.

ANDREW LAWSON is widely regarded as England's leading garden photographer. "The New English Garden" by Tim Richardson might easily be mistaken for just another lushly photographed coffee-table book describing well-designed gardens, the "garden porn" that gardeners love to curl up with during the cold winter months when they dream of spring.But "The New English Garden" differs from and is superior to most other books portraying gardens in two ways. First, author Tim Richardson is a knowledgeable garden historian who chose the gardens in his book to illustrate a larger story of the direction in which British garden design has been moving in the past decade or so. This aspect alone places his book a level above the standard "portrait of a garden" collections which simply showcase beautiful gardens of a region or type.However, this book is different in another, even more important way: Richardson is part of a new movement in Britain that is attempting to move gardening from its status as merely a hobby or technical profession to a more widely respected art form, on a plane with visual art, music or writing. This movement insists that for gardening to be taken seriously as an art form, it must be subject to the same type of artistic criticism that differentiates between good and better art, the kind of constructive criticism that pushes artists to improve their work.So after Richardson describes each of the twenty-five gardens in this book and relates why he deems it significant, he then identifies both the most successful aspects of each garden, as well as any weaknesses he perceives. And this last bit is where the big difference lies.It is actually slightly shocking to read something that is not 100% positive about someone's garden, when usually garden write-ups are limited to upbeat, admiring descriptions of both gardens and gardeners. Richardson's suggestions for improvement are of a wholly constructive kind, pointing out specific areas that he believes could be improved or an overall strategy that could make the garden even better than it currently is. But it nonetheless takes a certain amount of chutzpah to say of the Prince of Wales' garden that "the garden at Highgrove does not quite hang together as a coherent whole." And he bluntly states of Piet Oudolf's garden at Scampston Hall that "the overall structure of the new walled garden is a failure."This type of plain speaking will undoubtedly benefit gardening as a whole, as long as it is reserved for serious artistic efforts at gardening - not criticizing well-meaning amateur gardeners' efforts.But just because "The New English Garden" was intelligently-written and added to my understanding of modern gardening doesn't mean it wasn't still a beautiful book with lavish garden photos to drool over. The photographs of Pettifers, Temple Guiting and Gresgarth were particularly magnificently flower-filled. And the photos of some of the gardens planted in the last decade's New Perennials (grasses and large drifts of perennials) style also showed an attractive vision of what these gardens look like at their best.But, in keeping with Richardson's desire for serious criticism, I will point out a couple of things that would have made the book better: First, there sometimes seems to be a disconnect between Andrew Lawson's photos and Richardson's text. One example: Richardson asserts that "perhaps the most successful part of the Tilbury House garden is the walled kitchen garden to the south-west," and describes it at length in appetite-whetting terms, but I could not find a single photo of this "most successful part" of the garden, which was quite disappointing.Another small quibble is the lack of garden maps or plans, which are unfortunately all too rare among garden books. I spent quite a bit of time puzzling out the overall layout of each garden -- something Richardson tries to describe, but not always with success. A picture is worth a thousand words.But these points aside, "The New English Garden" is one of the most important garden books to be published this year in terms of garden writing, and certainly among the more beautiful. Beauty is something universally admired by gardeners, as that is a fundamental part of their vocation, and what a supremely beautiful book this is. Written by Tim Richardson and photographed by Andrew Lawson, Jane Sabire and Rachel Warne, it is an intimate tour of 25 visually spectacular English gardens, all of which were either made or re-designed in the last ten years. Hence the “new” in the title. Weighing in at more than five pounds, it consists of 300-plus pages and is ten by twelve inches, and so is a solid coffee table book that demands to be left out for anyone interested to peruse. Each garden is covered in ten to fifteen sumptuous pages, and you could do much worse that to study one garden each day with your morning coffee, in these dark days of late fall and early winter.English gardening is, at the present moment, at a very interesting inflection point. The 1990s saw the zenith of the “tapestry tradition”, the Arts & Crafts, color-blending movement and the beginning of a less floral, more naturalistic wave, led by the Dutch and German designers. Prominent among them is Piet Oudolf, for example and his famous “Dutch Wave”, that gives greater prominence to the whole plant and its structures in all seasons, than to its floral expression at one brief moment of glory. This new style has been met and matched in England by a more relaxed English style of gardening associated with the gardening legend Beth Chatto and others, in what is called the New Perennial Movement. And recently, there has been a reaction against both of these new waves and a return to a more traditional and familiar English style and vernacular.So this book fascinatingly explores this very vital moment of design flux, that is so very rich in inspiration and possibility. Thoughtful and amazing plant combinations and re-combinations are beautifully presented and detailed. Often a garden profile includes pictures of the garden in late autumn or winter, rimed in frost or dusted with an early light snowfall, and how beautiful these pictures are. The colors and the flowers are sculpturally subtracted, emphasizing the inherent beauty of the compositional plant forms, surely a revealing test of any garden’s underlying design. To me, these are some of the most interesting pictures in this book.There are some very famous gardens presented here, such as Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter and the Prince of Wales’ amazing garden at Highgrove, but it also presents the brand new massed plantings of the Olympic Park in London from 2012, as well as the sublime Gresgarth (by Arabella Lennox-Boyd) and Bury Court (by Piet Oudolf). It would be heaven to spend the last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of June some year, touring the great gardens of England, and certainly garden tourism is strongly on the rise there. My mom loves reading anything from Sylvia Browne. Though she doesn't believe in everything she said. She's a fan still. This was one of her favorites and helped her through the lost of her favorite African Grey.

OMG, I love this book. It helped that I have always loved Sylvia Browne, but when I had to say goodbye to my sweet Princess kitty after 17 years with her my heart was broken. I still grieve all my kitties that have passed and reading this book has helped to ease my grief. My kitty Princess got me through some tough dark times. It amazes me the compassion and unconditional love pets give us. Thank you for quick delivery and great condition of this book.

It's beneficial to get her insights that bridge our spiritual understanding of pets. I had to say goodbye to my beloved (incredibly sweet and gentle) pit bull, a breed that she is not complimentary of on more than one occasion in this book. This bothered me and sort-of robbed me of the full benefit I could have gotten, just don't know why she had to go there with putting a negative spin on a breed that has blessed many individuals and families barring a select few. There was at least as much - if not more - of a history of animals in general than anything. I think this book could have been condensed to half and kept its focus on the spiritual component. So why do I give it any stars? Because I did find the spiritual insights to be helpful in helping to heal some of my grief.

I just lost my 4th German shepherd boy, Skylar, nearly 3 weeks ago. He was my baby who became the man of the house and my protector after outliving his daddy (my husband George) and his other 3 siblings(3 German shepherd girls). We comforted and depended on each other as we began our new lives together. Since Skylar has been gone, I've been feeling so alone. Even though I've made new friends and they all got to know and love Skylar, life just isn't the same.I always find myself reading multiple books on grieving and the afterlife after losing a loved one, in order to find comfort. This book was the icing on the cake. It completely reassured me that all of our fur-angels are all in heaven waiting for us. Although it feels like another lifetime to us, to them, it feels like only a few moments. It also validates everything I've read in the past on this subject: animals and the afterlife, or about the afterlife in general. In fact, it even triggered memories about my own fur-angels who have done some amazing things. After reading this book, I'm finally comforted and at peace.

I believe in the here after, just not sure I buy into the totem animal and spirit guide theories. Regardless, the author encourages you to take what you choose from the information she presents. Reinforced my ideas on animals/pets which I found encouraging after my recent loss of my pet/best friend of 17 years.

I loved this book and it let's us know that our pets are sent to us and many of us will reunite with them again. I love it when she says that it's hard for our friends and families to greet us when we pass over due to the many pets who rush to greet us. That touches my heart. Thanks Sylvia for all you left behind for us to read. We know you are looking down on us and you should feel very good about the helpful body of work you left behind for us. I really wanted to like this, especially after having my kitty pass away, but just like other reviews this book is stories only. I would say 90% of the book is just stories. Definitely not what I expected. Bummer...

I bought this book for a friend who was inconsolable over the loss of her dog, picking it out because she questioned whether pets have to reincarnate (and whether her dog was being mistreated by its new owner) or if they need not visit the earth plane again. The book arrived and she promptly read it and told me that it helped her a lot.I read the reviews from it and was a little apprehensive because of some, but i'm very happy I sent it to her because she is more at ease from having read it.I would actually love to read it myself some day.

I always loved watching Sylvia Browne and believed she was really connected with the spirit world but now I’m even more convinced. This book answered so many questions I had over and above about animals and the spirit world and our reason for being on this earth. Animal lovers and pet owners alike will fully enjoy this book and feel closer to their pet after reading this!5 stars because I will definitely re-read this one!

I enjoyed this book as my first book on the subject. To start, it is well organized with a table of contents and an index. It also has a detailed glossary. So if you are new to the topic there are plenty of ways to initially learn, then use the book as a reference text. The author provides you context on how to read the book and starts out by covering sprit and grain basics. Next was an overview of Equipment. Details on all components with text and pictures, then guidance on where to buy and how much they cost. Technical tables are also provided in this section. Chapter 3 was a complete distillation walkthrough from cradle to grave. This chapter was long but built on the first two chapters and will probably be essential for people just starting out. Some great process tips for organizing your distillation run. The remaining chapters are recipes or grain bills, bottling, and safety. It was an enjoyable read and I finished it in two evenings. So useful appendices in the end as well. Lots of highlighting in my book with important content.

Chris takes the time to really explain the process from start to finish so that someone without any distilling experience can easily understand how to do it. The book is a very quick read because he explains things in laymen's terms and also explains the jargon in the distillation process. Chris also provides examples and recommendations on all of the equipment you will need, where to purchase it and how to set things up. He has even been so kind as to answer emails with further questions. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in distilling. I am very happy with my purchase.

I read and used the authors other book first "The Whiskey Distiller's Training Manual" which quickly got me started. After the first couple runs I got really excited about the possibilities and this book took me deeper into the craft. At this point I need to start the aging process and have every intention of creating a product to compete with the top shelf. If you think you would enjoy making your own this book will get you there. I can vouch for that!

This is a book of lost info that every American should learn and practice. Recipes are easily understood and the pictures and charts are easy to follow
