Review
“Paris may be universally known as the City of Light, but based on this exquisite book it could just as easily be called the City of Parks.†―Chicago Tribune“No matter how many times you have been to Paris, never go again without Susan Cahill (are you listening, Woody?) In our many visits there since 1957 my wife Judith and I thought we had covered all the known and not-so-known delights of the city. Only in reading The Hidden Gardens of Paris did we realize we had missed much of what had been hiding in plain sight. In her earlier book The Smiles of Rome she had worked the same magic, enabling us to return to the Imperial City in the company of notable writers whose experience in their time enraptures the visitor today. We have already started packing for Paris.†―Bill Moyers“Whether you go often to Paris or are making your first visit, this is the guide you need. Susan Cahill will accompany you through the parks of this beloved city--from famous public spaces to secret gardens: a walk through the history and lore of Paris and Parisians, all in the open air.†―Shirley Abbott, author of The Bookmaker's Daughter, Love's Apprentice, and The Future of Love“The secluded places that Susan Cahill and Marion Ranoux show us may have seemed off limits to the considerate traveller, anxious to avoid an invasion of French privacy. But this lively and informative guide gives one the confidence and the an overwhelming desire to venture into the Jardin Catherine Labouré and the Jardin du Musée Rodin, or, on the other hand, to tackle the Bois du Boulogne on the next visit to Paris.†―Elizabeth Cullinan, author of House of Gold“As someone who likes to build a walk into her daily routine, this handy, informative little book helped me visit old neighborhood park and garden friends and meet new ones. And what's not to like about the gardens of Paris and the stories behind them?†―Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don't Get Fat

I was kind of disappointed with this book. While it did contain plenty of useful information about secret gardens of Paris, I would have liked photos. Lots of photos. This book has very few pictures, and they are way too small. Paris is my favorite city. We just returned from a week long trip, and was excited to find the garden shown on the cover. We discovered it by accident, too! A book about secret gardens really does need to have plenty of pictures!
Very informative and useful! It's a tour guide of the Paris public parks and gardens. Each park or garden is described in a short 2 or 3 page article, with at least one color photo attached. There is also a page in each article containing a short paragraph with descriptions of nearby features such as restaurants and other sites. There is also a two page map showing the locations of all the parks and gardens described. The only deficiency in the map is that there are no street labels -- you have to be somewhat familiar with Paris to follow it. On the other hand, each of the articles contains the address of the park or garden and also identifies the nearest Metro station.
This book is a thoroughly enjoyable read and transports me back to Paris every time! When it is beginning to feel like my next trip to Paris will never arrive, I pick up Susan Cahill's well written book and enjoy a virtual trip. My copy has highlighting and Post-it notes everywhere. Why? Because as my return trip to Paris draws near, I begin my list of hidden gardens that I want to find. In doing this, I have discovered some wonderful neighborhoods and have come away feeling like more than just a "tourist". Thank you for a very well researched book!
The book is a perfect size, it has lovely pictures of every garden, and theauthor tells us on what street to enter the park, what Metro line to take andthe days and times the parks are open. It's a perfect guide to Parisiangardens you may not otherwise visit...really super.
I'm really glad to have come across this book because I hear a lot about all the parks and gardens in Paris, but have really only visited the main ones that tourists see. So I was interested in learning about the less-common ones. This book seems to really give good information on those. My one criticism (which is why I gave it 4 stars) is that I would like to see more photos, to really give a feel for what each garden is like. Photos can convey so much more than words at times, especially with nature.
Another nice and fun book about Paris. No problems with seller.
Charming compilation, some not always easy to get in to, but nice to be aware of for future.
We are headed to Paris for our 4th visit and this book is going with us! The book is beautifully organized by neighborhood. The photos are sublime. We were able to find a small park we saw on our first trip but have never found on our next visits. Now I am really excited to get on the plane again!
