I have been reading books on classic rock for almost 20 years now and I found this book just excellent. It has a brief, but interesting introduction to the history of the Grande before it starts discussing it's classic rock roots. The chapters are formatted into brief stories in chronological order that were well written and included quotes from people who were there and pictures interspersed. The formatting of the chapters into these mini stories made the book very easy to read and I did not even use a bookmark. The writing itself is well done and kept my interest the whole week I quickly devoured this book. Overall, I learned a lot I didn't know (how unfortunate about the historical nomination that didn't happen) and would definitely recommend for anyone interested in classic rock, Detroit history or any mix of the two.

Must have for anyone who attended the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, or wishes they had! Great look at the years that led up to the Grande being used as the venue for some of the greatest classic rock bands ever. Took me back to shows by the Cream, the Who, Jeff Beck, Janis Joplin, MC5, Iggy Pop, and so many others. For only a few short years the Grande offered the music and performers we kids wanted to hear for little more than a movie ticket. Great story with some terrific photos.

I just read this book , while sitting with my wife in the hospital. I recommend it highly. Very well written. Amazing pictures , and very in depth. This book covers the history of the city , the architects , the history of the building and buildings like it, as it flows into the era we came up in with great stories of the music, uncle Russ ,the rest of the staff and beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Superb job Leo .

Great book! Brought back many memories of my life in the sixties. I spent most of weekends there. Who could imagine seeing Led Zepplin ( at their first appearance, billed as "The New Yardbirds") for $5! Ah, those were the days. Highly recommended.

This detail-packed book is a tough read but certainly worthwhile. The author describes how African country after country fell into disaster and calamity after each had become independent from their colonial powers, who had divided up the map of the continent into separate national units with zero knowledge or understanding of the future (usually terrible) consequences. Leadership in country after country fell to the most ruthless and corrupt, and societies declined into truly horrible circumstances characterized by crumbling infrastructure, deepened poverty, wars, atrocities, and AIDS. Often self-serving interventions by outsiders, including even some aid organizations, only made matters worse. The really amazing aspect of African culture that the author portrays is the attitude of hope that permeates African societies living in circumstances that we in the West would consider unbearable. In the midst of incredible suffering, Africans retain their dignity and their love of family. This book, which is best read in small doses, leaves one with the feeling that if only Africa can put its political house in order, significant progress, maybe even miraculous progress, will be made.

Dowdens' insight and knowledge of Africa are impressive. Having traveled to most of the countries in Africa as an author, I found his account accurate–a quality hard to find in some writers. His criticisms of 'big men', the militaristic Americans, and the Chinese gave me additional insight into the tragedy of Africans against the world. It's pitiful the African leaders care so little about their nations, preferring to bank away AID money in European bank accounts.If you have an interest in knowing the truth about American aid into Africa, this is a must read. I found this book to be highly engaging.

I could not put this book down... it challenged me to regroup, rethink, and work harder to build deep and meaningful relationships with all this diversity Africa offers.

Got this book as a Christmas present and am presently reading it. Love it as I have myself traveled to many regions of Africa. Gives me fresh new insight to an extraordinary continent and its people. Wish I could read in one sitting as it is a page turner. Very interesting how the author explains Africa's past history and draws the reasons and some answers to the continent's many challenges and struggles. I'm sure to fall in love with Africa all over again once I read the entire book. Wondering and longing for where my next travels to Africa will take me.

Dowden's knowledge of Africa excellent. His criticisms of colonialists, "big men', Chinese and militaristic Americans is spot on. But, what shines is the resilience and hope in the face of hopelessness of the long-suffering Africans.The vast amount of aid money that now sits in accounts in Europe and the Caribbean due to the greed of African leaders is tragic for donors and target recipients alike. Dowden knows that only Africans can determine how Africa works.

Absolutely a must read. Very informative, enlightening, and made me love Africa even more.

Africa, called the dark continent because of our lack of knowledge. So many countries and so much turmoil. This book not only touches on some history but ta;lks much about the people and how they respond to the turmoil and their lust for life in the midst of all of the turmoil (and death and destruction) and their incredible ability to forgive. It shows their ability to sing and rejoice in all of the circumstances and yes, it certainly shows the depth of their sufferings. An excellent writing style that is not dry history but alive in its telling.

I've been purchasing a lot of these AG books for my daughter and she loves them. They are age appropriate and give great tips and advice in general.

Great book for 11 year old daughter to read. Live the book

I've previously seen some Smart Girl's Guide books, but I think they were not associated with American Girl at the time. Now that AG has published some, my daughter is more eager to read them. This one is the guide to Sports & Fitness and has a lot of good information for a growing girl.The book addresses the physical and mental benefits of playing sports and how to be your best in both areas. It also talks about how to treat your body with good food and hydration. There are some excellent tips on staying fit and forming good habits to last a lifetime.Teen and tweens can vary immensely in their levels of physical and emotional maturity. This book does a good job of presenting suggestions that are general enough to apply to girls at all levels of development, while be specific enough to be understood and applied. All the pages are colorful with positive illustrations. Text is broken down into small chunks - lists, tips, dialog, etc. - making it easy to get through. This book is geared toward eight to 12 year olds and I think that is a great range to get a growing girl thinking about how to be active and healthy.

I started getting American Girl books for my daughter ever since our pediatrician recommended The Body Book for Girls back when she started showing signs of early puberty. My daughter loved that book and we proceeded to get other titles about starting middle school, knowing what to say in social situations, how to organize yourself and your life, how to relate to your family, understanding your feelings, and more recently, a girl's guide to her parents' divorce. My daughter may be a bit emotionally less mature than her peers, but as a tween girl, these guides were a godsend for us. She read each one cover to cover and I think she enjoyed getting her information from a written format rather than just from listening to me talk about these topics. This book was not a huge hit for my daughter--as the topic is on sport and fitness which is not her forte. I thought it was still valuable for her to read, but she was less enthusiastic about this one.

This book is great for girls in the 8-13 year old range. It's loaded with lots of great advice about exercise, taking care of yourself by eating healthy, developing a positive body image and being a good sport. It's a good book to give to the young girl in your life who likes to be active and participate in sports.

This is a good book. It talks about exercise and eating and all the ways that it's good for you. It talks about all different types of activities you can do to stay healthy and feel your best. It's got some fun pictures and a few interactive pages as well. Overall, my 9 year old loved it.

This is a nice book for young girls/ladies interested in sports of any kind. It is filled with great advice centering around the world of sports. It has exercise suggestions, quizes, quotes from other girls, and lots more. It encourages a positive body image and teamwork. The illustrations are icing on the cake. They are colorful and a fun addition.
