Please understand that I am not reviewing Miss Austen's works but rather this particular presentation of her books. The set is lovely to look at and will look nice on a shelf or desk just because they are pretty. The binding is good and I really like it that each book has a ribbon marker so I won't be always misplacing my bookmarker! As many have stated, it is a very big shame that the stickers are on the back of each book. I am assuming that maybe because mine came in the winter months the sticker came off fairly easily, leaving no sticky residue. But it is obvious on every book that there was a sticker. Some show a dark mark the size and shape of the sticker. But most of them took off some of the ink on the beautiful covers when the sticker came off. So you have a mark and some of the ink is missing on many of them. This needs to be rectified. ( I have posted photos of the backs of some of the books.)The only other complaint I have at this point is that the case is just a tad too tight. Just a couple of centimeters added to the width and height would make it so much easier to remove a book from the case. As it is now, I have to turn the box over and dump the books out enough so that I can grasp the spine of the one I want to pull it out. I can only see this being more of a problem in the future as books tend to expand when read.I am interested in some of the other sets they offer, but right now would hesitate to spend that much money considering the flaws I mentioned.

I gave it four stars because it was a shrink wrapped box set, but each book had a price sticker on it. This wouldn't be a problem except that when removing the stickers, they took off the pink coloring on the book cover. I got these because the covers are beautiful, so it made me mad that a few of them are ruined now.

Beautiful set with everything she wrote. I'm enjoying the volumes very much. I wish those stupid stickers hadn't been on the backs of the books, though, because when you take them off they ruin some of the cover design and leave a mark where they were taken from.

If you want to preserve classics and like to read with a cup of a tea and a cozy chair, these are for you. Simple cloth binding is enhanced with vintage-style decoration. Thick paper and good, easy to read print. These books are comfortable to read, look great on the shelf.

This set is absolutely stunning and well worth the money. I fell in love as soon as I opened the box. For Jane Austen lovers and pretty edition book lovers, this set is a must.

Beautiful penguin editions, real books, sewn not glued, archival type paper, very nice intros to each book, fabric over paper covers. Glorious to read Jane from such a beautifully designed book. Copious footnotes and information about the history of each books genesis from her childhood stories to publications and additional editions.

Review for Jane Austen: The Complete Novels Kindle edition: The kindle version of this collection is not what the description says. It is missing the novel Persuasion. It was difficult even to figure out it was missing because there is no overall table of contents you have to scroll through the chapters list to get to the different works. I also tried searching for the characters' names with no luck. The reviews seem to be for a mix of of many different items: physical books, the collections, single books, kindle versions etc. or people just reviewing the works themselves causing a undeserving and misleading high rating. I haven't had a chance to read it all yet but I spot checked Pride and Prejudice with my physical copy and it seemed accurate. Still a good price for what was included but not what I should have been getting.

I'm re-reading most of these novels while others are new to me. But they are all a delight. Austen does more with dialogue in defining characters than other authors can do with long descriptions. What an ear! There are no great tragedies, like in the Brontes' novels, but the lives of these characters have very human joys and heartbreaks that can resonate in any era. Austen was definitely a woman of her time, yet she understood the ins and outs of the middle class better than any other author of any century. Darcy and Elizabeth are no Heathcliff and Catherine, and I'm very glad of it. Their troubles stem from human frailties and interference, which 'most anyone who has had any kind of relationship can understand and relate to. These are novels to savor.

Listen, this book is barely a book. It's more like a short erotica. There was hardly a storyline, the heroine goes in for a job interview and ends up a submissive in a office group sex thingy. Not realistic at all and there was no real plot just sex. Maybe it was written this way so it can be a series. I haven't read all the series and I'm not sure if I want to but I'm sure all of them put together could have made one full length book. The sex scene was the only thing saving this. 1 star for story and 2 for sex

Very enticing and compelling story,as you read it gets better and better, how I would like to be(right after I win the lottery) . The characters were well thought out, but I would like more background information on Cunningham, maybe a prequel his earlier exploits. The set up in this story to keep going is what makes it very good.

Relatively well written, although some of the word choice felt a bit juvenile. Main character is interesting. But she says no at one point and the men never get a verbal yes after. They don't really prep her on being a sub or set limits or get her safe word. We as the reader know she's consenting but it feels like she's being taken advantage of (and not in a fun way, although the sex is fun). Will not be continuing at this point but maybe later.

Office Toy is an erotic M-M-M-F read that includes BDSM. It's the story of a young submissive interviewing for a job. The interview, sexual in nature, is where we meet characters Nolan, Cunningham, & Jonathan. I read this short story twice as I was on the fence as to how to rate it. I like short stories that manage to incorporate a plot with character development. It's tricky to find a short story that has both those qualities in a limited amount of pages and Office Toy fell short in this department.Office Toy ends around 90% (the last 10% are previews for other books) is not bad read. Something is just missing. Although the sex scenes are descriptive, this still was not enough of an umph factor for me. I didn't make a connection to any of the characters. I did however find something mysterious about Nolan and wanted to know more. The warning Nolan issues Elle at the end pique my curiosity. During the end you also find out Nolan & Cunningham's relationship. Due Nolan and Cunningham's relationship, there might be more to this duo.I’m hoping book 2 will explore character relationships giving the plot and series a bit more grit. Overall, an ok read for a lazy day.

This is a very short fantasy erotica akin to what you find in an adult magazine, like Playboy. I read it in about an hour & understanding it is not meant to be realistic I could enjoy it for the errotica. I do give it a lower rating strictly because there is a price on it (I read when it was free with prime). I find the $2.99 price tag a bit if a stretch on the value. Even though the author put time into it, I still cannot see it as more than .99... But even that I question.

Extremely well written, which is very fortunate because if the language was too foul, the editing under-done or the grammar or structure was bad, I would have never finished reading this.Believe me, I'm not prudish ... I just know what I like, and what I don't. That said, I wouldn't have downloaded an erotica book if the genre did not appeal to me...and the description was right on for subject matter. That's why I still gave it five stars, nothing was wrong with this book or story. I enjoyed almost every word and would not ask anything to be removed. I'm just thankful Ms Peitsche is such an excellent writer I was able to read past a couple of things.I would purchase more of her books in a heartbeat and recommend them to friends who like to read well written and steamy erotica.

Office Toy is a very strong sexual job interview that reads very hot! It would make a good scene in a porno movie, and like the fantasy of a porno, it's unrealistic and moves extremely fast. As unrealistic as the story is, i couldn't help but picture it in my mind, as if it were from a porno, and I'd be first in line to buy the movie!Office Toy was a fun read, and causes me to miss a girlfriend I had on college.

It was interesting and weird at the same time. Not quite what I was expecting. However, it got me hooked to read the next books in the series. I really hate that, but I know the author needs to make money and it's better for them to sell in installments.

This is one of my favorite non-fiction reads. This story of a Chinese family who seeks asylum in the United States, while highly personalized and deeply characterized, touches on universal themes of freedom, the meaning of family, immigrant striving, and the American dream. Reading this book humanized the bits and pieces you or I would read in the news about Chinese politics and shines a light on the story of Wukan village which deserves its proper telling in history. Highly highly recommend!

I bought this because I'm very interested in Chinese politics and because I've been to Flushing often for food, but otherwise don't know about it. Zhuang Liehong was a human rights activist in China who got enough publicity that a number of American human rights activists met him in China. However, once he gets to NYC (Flushing) he has virtually no contact with them--why? The author does see he and his wife from time to time, but only helps him a little--why? I only got as far as Chapter 10, at which point I gave up because the story became a lot of minutiae as the couple's relationship deteriorates.

A very good book. Informative. Very difficult to put down.

The author spent six years in China, and had been back in America two years when a contact from her expatriate time phoned her suddenly, saying he would see her soon in New York. This was totally unexpected, although she knew that Zhuang Liehong and his wife, Little Yan, were hoping to escape from China and seek political asylum in the United States. Zhuang was a political activist, seeking to reform the local system in Wukan, the village where he lived. Corruption was rife, and he wanted justice for his fellow villagers.Escape was amazingly easy- they managed to get visas to take a tour of some US cities, under the auspices of a tour guide. The hang up was that they had to leave their infant son behind, to make it look like they were coming back. But they hoped to get asylum right away and be able to send for him. They left him with family.New life in the US was not so easy, though. Zhuang did not speak any English, and what English Little Yan knew was rusty. Hilgers went to where she had her laundry done; the woman there gave her some contacts and hints. Soon enough, the couple found that being granted asylum was neither easy nor fast. Without asylum and green cards, they cannot get above-board jobs, so making a living is difficult. Plus, at first Zhuang insists that Little Yan must work at the same place he does, so he can keep an eye on her. And when he gets over that, he goes back to political activism, which eats up a lot of his time. This story alternates with backstory, telling us how and why Zhuang became a man the government of China wanted to keep an eye on.There are some many people that Zhuang and Little Yan interacted with that you practically need a cast of characters. The story can be confusing at times; non-fiction is rarely as smooth and even as novels are. I found the story fascinating; those of us born in the US can barely grasp what difficulties immigrants face when they come here, particularly ones seeking political asylum. Zhuang and Little Yan were lucky because they knew someone in New York, an American who could speak their language, who was willing to devote time to helping them. I recommend this book a lot; it’s highly illuminating of problems both here and in China. Four and a half stars.

“Patriot Number One: American Dreams in Chinatown” follows several Chinese citizens that enter the United States through various means – none of them the traditional, legal route. Lauren Hilgers examines their lives in a “sanctuary city” in upstate New York. Please see the pictures below. The book tells the story of these Chinese citizens by interspersing stories of the present with chapters that are reflections of their time in China. Fortunately, please see the pictures, each chapter also includes the dates that the chapter is covering. The main two protagonists are Zhuang and Little Yan, a married couple that obtains a tourist visa to the United States, and then, leaves the tour group. This was no accident, Zhuang planned it for years. The couple even arranged for their toddler to be left with mother’s parents. Based on Internet research, Zhuang decided to try to settle in Flushing, New York, a well-known sanctuary city. The title of the book comes from Zhuang’s moniker that he used as an anonymous handle well agitating in China. The couple had limited resources, essentially no grasp of English, and no marketable skills. Neither of them had an advanced degree, and the couple was in trouble in China were being political agitators. The couple was able to get green cards through the intervention of a local, Democratic Representative. This has the inevitable consequences one expects. As Little Yan pointed out, while virtually none of the below the line immigrants could speak/read/write English, all of them voted for Secretary Clinton in the 2016 election. The book follows immigrants’ progress as they work in jobs below the board, eking out a meager existence. Little Yan worked in a series of nail salons, travel bureaus, etc. She was paid in cash, and it is clear that the owners did not keep her on the books. Zhuang was a little more forward in his illegal activities. He collected requests for American luxury goods using the Internet, and then he bundled and ships to these goods to China without paying any duties or taxes. The money was laundered through various intermediaries, including friends and family. Predictably, Zhuang eventually turned back to political protesting, and it did not win him that many friends in his new country. The book includes humor as well as insights into the lives of these Chinese citizens. The book is extremely upbeat and glosses over some of the more unsavory side of their lives. (It hints at the activities, but quickly moves on.)The book describes some of their personal challenges and the impact that the stresses had on their marriage. By halfway through the book, it was clear that neither of them was very happy either with their lot in life or with their marriage. Things got better for them. After obtaining their green cards, they were able to bring their son over to the United States.Lauren Hilgers does a reasonable job of keeping the book politically neutral, but sometimes the author’s viewpoints slip through.Eventually, both Zhuang and Little Yan are able to get additional training and begin working in menial jobs.As we leave the book, all of the now green card holding members of the Flushing community seem to be doing well. The book is interesting, and it portrays the shady side of Chinese immigration in the most positive, glowing terms possible. If you are doing research on immigration then this is a good book to read is a very gentle introduction to the topic.

I've been fortunate enough to read several wonderful memoirs in the past few months, but this one in particular really stands out. I selected it because despite my own lifelong love of horses, I had never heard of the Mongol Derby and wanted to know more, and because Mongolia has always been high on my list of places that I would like to visit. The author, Lara, begins her story by describing how, at age nineteen, she found herself somewhat adrift when all of her friends seem to have solid plans for their lives. She discovers the derby, billed as the toughest horse race in the world, and enters somewhat on a whim, only learning afterwards that competitors usually train for many months in order to prepare for a race of that magnitude. Lara does appear to be woefully unprepared when she arrives in Mongolia and begins the race, only to eventually end up winning it.Much of the story takes place over the days she was racing, combining descriptions of the Mongolian land, people, and some history, with Lara's thoughts about past events in her life and how she's processing the race. We meet a lot of her other competitors, including Devan, who was the lead rider for much of the race and eventually became Lara's top competitor as she strove to beat her. We also meet a lot of the people who help run the race, from the race steward to the photographers, vets, and television crews. And, of course, we meet many native Mongolians, in whose homes Lara stays during the nights. One of the reasons that this memoir is so excellent is that Lara seamlessly blends all of these things together in one descriptive narrative, moving easily from one topic to another in a way that doesn't jar the reader or leave the reader hanging. Her prose is beautiful, which helps with these transitions. Although she provides plenty of descriptions of the Mongolian countryside and the days of the race, it is not the type of memoir where the reader always knows exactly where she is and what she is doing all the time. Part of this is just inherent in the nature of the race - Lara is dependent upon a GPS, map, and a book put together for the racers in order to know where she is, and she doesn't always know. I would have been interested to see a total map at the end of the book, showing the approximate course she ran, but it wasn't strictly necessary. While Lara begins the race with a suspicion that she'd be lucky to finish, this changes when she finds herself narrowing the lead between herself and Devan, and the latter part of the book does focus heavily on that rivalry. While I was surprised about some of the things she said out loud about Devan, Lara herself was also surprised, and mentioned that she couldn't believe some of the things that came out of her own mouth. It didn't bother me though, because I read it as more Lara basically accidentally said the things that other people are thinking when they are competing intensely with someone (and it appeared that Devan made it obvious from the beginning of the race that she was in it to win it herself). The race is set up to spur intense competition - television crews are following them, interviewing them, asking questions about other competitors, and broadcasting their progress to the world. Add to that the fact that the competitors are tired, sore, and sometimes sick, and I'm not at all surprised she ended up saying things she shouldn't. Additionally, I just really liked Lara - I could totally relate to feeling adrift, wanting to try something extraordinary, her need to compete and win, and her love of horses.Overall, highly recommended, and I hope to see more from her in the future.

I knew nothing about the Mongol Derby, but I am always interested in women’s accomplishments and adventures, so I looked forward to reading this book. Unfortunately, I found it a major disappointment on all levels.Lara Prior-Palmer presents a very limited, self-centered view of the Derby. I had many questions about the race that were not answered. I found the writing style annoying until I came to a line (since I had an advanced copy, I cannot quote the book) about sobbing summer streets and a duvet of snow that had me groaning out loud for the first, but not the last, time.Much of the book is about her thoughts, her philosophizing, reminiscing, or relating Mongol history. It was very disjointed, and trying to follow the race, I often could not tell what day it was or how far into the race she was. Part of that may come from the length of time between the actual race in 2013 and the publication of this book.I didn’t like the author at the beginning, which is okay, I know most people prefer sugar-and-spice-and-everything-nice female protagonists, but normally I am more accepting. However, I was disturbed by Lara’s nasty attitude and poor sportsmanship.Arriving at the race venue, she immediately decided she hated another woman, Devan, whom she begins to refer to as the Devil or "the B**ch”. She repeatedly mentions Devan is American, from Texas, is a blonde, and has an item of pink clothing, which she cannot forgive. (Full disclosure: I am American and blonde, I lived in Texas for a while a long time ago and hated it, and although I only wear black, my kitchen is pink.) Devan is in the lead throughout most of the race and Lara is determined not to let her win. It seems to be the only thing that motivates her. When Lara realizes she has caught up with Devan at one of the overnight stays, Lara leaves, despite the late hour, and tells the film crew that she will not stay under the same roof as Devan. Later, she tells the film crew that she wishes Devan would fall down a marmot hole. I was dismayed by her bad sportsmanship and just plain nastiness.Normally, if I hate a book by page 100, I quit. However, Lara’s irrational hatred and obsession with Devan fascinated me to the point that I kept reading only to find out what happened to Devan.Lara, near the end of the race, loses her map and steals the map of a race official, then, oddly, asks him if she can have his map. He says no, he needs it. She then makes a rude comment to him about wiping her (I’ll say “behind”) with his map and rides off with the stolen map. Incidents like this puzzled me. I don't understand how her mind works. Was that supposed to be amusing? There is a shocking scene near the end when her horse stopped and refused to move no matter how hard Lara kicked and whipped it. She has a guy on a motorcycle follow along behind her, revving the engine to terrorize her horse into trotting each time it stopped. I would have disqualified her or at least penalized her. All in all, I do not think she deserved to win.

Review

For many in this country, it is probable that the definition of indigenous fauna is limited simply to the coqu. But, for Cuban biologist Alfonso Silva Lee, the variety of animals on the Island is extended above and beyond the famous frog, immortalized as a souvenir, in the majority of cases, erroneously. Because, generally, the frogs that are seen on these T-shirts or ceramic figures so coveted by the tourists are representations of South American species. With this new book, however, the misinformation could begin to be corrected. EL NUEVO DÍA, San Juan, PR --Por Dentro, September 7, 1999In Natural Puerto Rico, Alfonso Silva Lee invites us to know the fauna of this beautiful island, and he does it in a scientific way, with an agile and congenial style, and with some overwhelmingly beautiful photographs.(Periódico Todo Gráfico (Mercedita, PR), November 16, 1998) --(Periódico Todo Gráfico (Mercedita, PR), November 16, 1998)

#2,642,064 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book would be a small beginner's (preteen) handy pocket guide IF HALF THE BOOK WEREN'T IN SPANISH!!! BOTH translations are on the SAME page, making it VERY hard to read page to page (not Spanish on one page, English on the other as is NORMALLY done). Was hoping for an educated person's field guide (have a minor in Limnology), explaining the myriad of flora and fauna of Puerto Rico and their interdependence - not a lesson in GENERAL biology 101. There are so MANY unique species in PR, but this book barely covers any of them (maybe if the book was in 100% English, there would be more room for that info! Most of the pictures are VERY small, with a one-sentence description, and with some (amateurish) photos - no detailed text pertaining to the various species shown. Would have been more informative (and MUCH cheaper) to just Google the data on PR and print out the info, than pay for this total waste of paper and space! Too bad the pages are slick, can't even be used as toilet paper!

This book does well what it aims to do: introduce middle and high school students to natural history, using Puerto Rico as a framework. As an experienced naturalist, I found it disappointing. Most is the content is very general rather than specific to Puerto Rico, with the exception of the wonderful photographs and their captions. If you know little about natural history, you may enjoy this book. But if you are looking for depth on the unique Puerto Rican flora and fauna, don't waste your time with this one.

This collection of essays is a valuable guide for those in middle management and above. It answers the need for a guide to both how to be a more effective strategic thinker, or how to become a strategic thinker.Much has been written about formulating strategy, but this is an event that once ended, is left to be executed by strategic thinkers. This is the first comprehensive book I have read on how to be that person, at any leadership level. The authors describe strategic thinking as “analyzing opportunities and problems from a broad perspective, and understanding the potential impact your actions might have on the future of your organization, your team, or your bottom line.”The strategic genius, Professor Rumelt titled his seminal book, ‘Good Strategy, Bad Strategy’ because he believes strategy is either one or the other. There is no other option. In similar vein I have observed that people are either good strategic thinkers or bad strategic thinkers, there is no third category.Strategic thinking begins with going beyond your day-to-day activities and considering the larger environment in which you’re operating. It starts with asking questions and challenging assumptions about how things operate in your company and industry. Based on strategic thinking, you are able to make daily decisions about how you and your team should be spending your time. This is the only way you ensure that every choice you make, and every action you take, drives results that matter to the organization. On even cursory reflection, this is an obvious requirement of every successful manager at every level.Strategic thinking is not a natural way of thinking, rather it is a skill that is learned deliberately, or less often, by osmosis in an environment of strategic thinkers.Strategic thinking starts with an understanding of the company’s strategy. At whatever level one operates, this is what one is employed to do. Period. If it is a good strategy, you will able to claim that you are partly responsible for its success. If it is a bad strategy, you will able to claim that you worked as effectively as you could to try and get the best out of a bad strategy.William Schiemann reports that only 14% of organizations he surveyed, claimed that their employees had a clear understanding of their company’s strategy and direction, and that only 24% felt the strategy was linked to their individual accountabilities and capabilities. The characteristics of a strategic thinker have received attention in the leadership literature. However, this is “usually in isolation and seldom in the special context of high stakes and deep uncertainty that can make or break both companies and careers”, the authors explain.People who think strategically have specific personal traits, behaviors, and attitudes, the first of which is curiosity about – well, everything – what is going on in the company, in the industry, in the country, amongst competitors, and more. And then they question whether they and their units are focused on the right things. Their focus is on the future and how the unit and company’s operations may change in the coming months and years. To be a strategic leader, not just a strategic thinker, requires consistency. The objective that you pursue, must be persistently pursued, but this must be combined with the agility to adapt approaches and shift ideas when new information is received.A fundamental of strategic thinking is learning: the gathering of knowledge and information. This often complex, sometimes ambiguous body of data, must be interpreted to get the insights you can use to make smart choices and select appropriate courses of action. There are many ways to deal with this confusion, but the authors offer effective and easily applied approaches. These include: talking to your customers, suppliers, and other partners to understand their challenges; using simple scenarios to imagine various futures so you can prepare for the unexpected; looking at fast-growing rivals, and examining the actions they have taken that puzzle you. (For example, why did they have a sale early this year, but of much fewer items that everyone else.)You could use the “five whys” of Sakichi Toyoda, (Toyota’s founder). Why did this happen? And when you have an answer, ask a “why” on that answer, and so on five times to get to the heart of the matter.Finland’s former president J. K. Paasikivi was fond of saying that wisdom begins by recognizing the facts and then “re-cognizing,” or rethinking them, to expose their hidden implications. When analyzing ambiguous data, the authors suggest, list at least three possible explanations for the data, and invite perspectives from others. When you advance from strategic thinking, to the decision and action phase of being a strategic leader, insist on multiple options right at the beginning. Avoid getting prematurely locked into simplistic go/no-go choices of the Brexit variey. Reframe binary decisions by asking your colleagues, “What other options do we have?” And then make your decision based on the long-term, not the short-term.As a strategic thinker, the recurring question that you must ask yourself is, how your actions create value that can maximize your contribution to your organization, and set you up for success. You will find this book is extraordinarily valuable. It has no 'breakthrough', new material; everything has been said more fully elsewhere before, but never as a concise guide, all in one place.Readability Light -+--- SeriousValuable Insights Many --+-- FewPractical application High +---- LowIan Mann consults internationally on strategy and implementation and is the author of “Strategy That Works” and the “Executive Update”.
