I finished the second book this morning and I am still an emotional wreck. Yang has officially passed into another plane of storytelling. Those who know his work well are used to Yang's subtle approach to difficult topics like radical forgiveness, cultural identity and cultural shame, and even social Darwinism, eugenics, and child abuse, all with a wry sense of humor and empathy. His work also often reflects the ways in which ordinary people grapple with and through faith in the midst of personal crisis. "Boxers" and "Saints" are no different in one sense, but this story has a fundamental difference: the stakes are so much higher, and the outcome, potentially so much more disastrous. The characters seem trapped by decisions and consequences which, once they start rolling, spin entirely out of their control.What Yang gives us in each book is a separate portrait of two young people from similar circumstances who take dramatically different paths to finding a coherent identity and a sense of justice. Through their interwoven stories, Yang takes each one through a series of extremely difficult questions about the origins of religious and political extremism, how even good people with noble ideas can cause unspeakable damage, the horrors of imperialism, and the ways in which the various Christian mission movements were problematically tied to the imperialists. Yang takes no sides and does not moralize about the events of the Boxer rebellion, just a profound sadness for their plight and his ever-present deep, deep empathy. And that is precisely what makes these novels so devastating.Yang explores in gut-wrenching detail the ways in which each person's unique experiences shape the ways in which they react to political and cultural upheaval. This two-volume graphic narrative set against the historical events of the Boxer uprising in turn-of-the-century China tells the complementary tales of Little Bao, an adolescent Chinese boy who leads the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fist in defense of his homeland against British and European imperialists, and Vibiana, an adolescent Chinese girl who converts to Catholicism in an effort to seek a sense of belonging. Their stories intertwine in plausible and compelling ways that force us to examine the reasons why adolescents—even in the most dire of circumstances—value community and peer support.Without taking sides, Yang masterfully depicts his protagonists as flawed but sympathetic teens who earnestly attempt to grow, learn, and develop their principles amidst a backdrop of political and religious conflict. Both Little Bao and Vibiana experience mystical encounters with spiritual beings who guide them through their ordeals; the magical realism infuses their stories with metaphysical resonance and calls to mind the ancient Greek epic of the Iliad, during which the gods fought alongside mortals. This is a great book to learn about the Boxer Rebellion from two great POVs. Yang does a fantastic job of weaving in Chinese historical mythology with history. I received the books last night, finished Boxers and now on Saints. Boxers show the POV of a young man in Shandong who lead the charge, and Saints is about a young woman who falls in with the Catholic groups. Both POVs are incredibly written, but the Saints book is incredible--Yang shows how many Chinese people fell in to the religion without truly understanding what it meant. He captures the pain and agony of life as a young woman in China at the time who simply is not of that time and who must turn to alternatives (Catholics) in order to achieve community.Highly recommended!!!The shipping for this product was fast (granted, I do have Prime).

If you take anything away from this review, let it be this: READ "BOXERS" FIRST.Okay, now to the meat. "Boxers" is the story of a young Chinese boy who becomes incensed at how Christians have invaded China and begun to despoil both Chinese culture and the Chinese people. So he learns how to invoke the gods of China to fight back. "Saints", on the other hand, is the story of a young Chinese girl, terribly abused by her family, who finds comfort in Christianity, converts, and -- spurred on by visions of Joan of Arc -- wishes to fight back against the Boxers. The stories are great counterpoints to each other, containing many humanizing touches that make you feel you are reading about real people, not archetypes. The artwork is very clean and readable, and sophisticated in its storytelling, proving against the modern wave of hyper-detailed comic book art that sometimes less is more.

Although I am far beyond the targeted age group for these books, I have enjoyed reading the continuing saga of the Incorrigible Children.The stories are well crafted, have lots of educational bon mots thrown in as well as general good rules to live by.The Unmapped Sea ...( I don't know what that title has to do with the story except they were at the beach)...has ramped up the creepy level and seems much scarier and darker than the first four books. I was very sure this would be the end of the tale and the tails, but readers rejoice, there will be more. This edition leaves our heroine in the lurch, so the author better get typing and get the next installment ready. My nervous system can't stand the strain!

Wow. MaryRose Wood outdid herself in this book, and we adored the other books....we eagerly awaited this book for months, and it was totally worth the wait! We can hardly wait for the 6th book.The author is a master at humor and wit and suspense and unexpected plot twists.What we really loved was the chapter near the end (don’t worry I won’t ruin it) tied up every single one of the lose threads from the previous 4 books....we sat there mesmerized at her skill!

Such a good series! This is a crowd pleaser, for sure. Kids ages 5-14 are enjoying this series, and mom is listening to the audiobooks for fun as well! So cleverly written, great story lines, and so much to love!

The series of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place are great books; Not only is the storyline suspenseful, but the books have many educational tidbits. One of the best series we and our grandchildren have read.

This story has the same child-like heart as the other books, although we get the tiniest peak at romance so it is just a little more mature. The Incorrigibles continue to be delightful, the story is as clever as usual, and we are once again left wanting more. Can't wait for the next installment!

I love all of these books. I am disappointed in the change of illustration I will say, but the reason I was attached to the illustrations in the first place was because MaryRoseWood has made me fall in love with the characters. She has introduced some new characters in this book and the tone has changed a bit. The feel is more overt, not the same deliciousness of suspense but a good read none-the-less.

I loved it. The hardest part is remembering all the subtleties from previous books, and it's those nuances that make reading a kids book enjoyable for me. I haven't checked to see if the next book is already out. If not, I hope to see it sooner than the time between these last two. But that's a compliment to the writer -- your fans can't wait to hear from you again!

It looks hopeless but Penelope is aSwanburne girl, and "no hopeless case is ever without hope." So glad that Book 6 is ready to read!

I chugged this book like it was orange soda and I was Kel. I just couldn't put it down! I really like Skylar and her so very teenaged reactions. I'm so excited to see her standing up for her best interests even if it looks like it hurts for a while. I feel like there can be a HEA for these folks in the future! The guys are so clearly trying to figure out emotions, loyalties, and life. Its a very transitional time and the pressure of the events could only make everyone a little crazy! I only wish the guys could be as honest with Skyler as she was with them *cough*DEVIN*cough*. I can't wait for EVIL [VILLAIN] gets her just desserts.

I devoured this book as I have really enjoyed this series. This book was filled with high angst to the 10th degree. I was pissed off at all the characters at one point or another for their immaturity via lack off communication for the most part. Then I had to settledown and remind myself that these kids are in high school. The author has captured what she set out to create! I look forward to the next book in this series.

It is great quick read. I read it in one sitting. I can't wait to read what happens next. The little cliffhanger at the end has me intrigued!

This book ended with me needing more. The drama is brought forward so intense that I felt for each and every one . I’m ready for the next .

I've always been working in finance and have zero experience in the coffee industry. After reading just the first few chapters, I realized that I am still really far away from that dream. I am seriously considering taking some coffee classes and boy, they are pretty costly. Definitely an eye opening book for me and I feel like I have a much better direction to work towards instead of just dreaming all the time. Very quick and easy read, very to the point with no useless materials to waste your time on. Highly recommended as a first book into the business! Of course you will need to read more books as you progress through your plans to get a more in depth understanding on the business. But this is definitely the perfect first book on the subject.

I’m hoping to open a cafe in the next year and fortunately came across this book by luck! I had yet to find anything like this beforehand. I loved how straightforward and to the point it all was. I loved how realistic the information was and how it also gave encouragement with doses of good realty. The one thing I would have loved to read was an actual example of a small business coffee shop. Including their figures, how it did the first year, how they managed it, things like that. Other than that, I’m very grateful I found this book and I learned a lot of information that was needed! I’m grateful the author felt inspired to take the time to write it.

Easy to read and understand. Gave a backstage view into building a coffee house. I the author spoke of site, building, equipment and counter layout along with supplies, budget, salary and long term fiance. Great eye opener for the dreamer and the business person. I feel this book gave me the insight to learn and prepare more for this journey. The author provided valuable insight and experience. I now have a glimpse into the journey ahead of me.

This book is by far the best one I've read while research opening a coffee shop! Easy to understand and a lot of good information!

This book will definitely be with me when I eventually start my business and I’m glad to have it. I couldn’t find many things I didn’t like about this book considering it did exactly what it says. It’s a short, but factual resource.

This is an excellent book; a little pricey, but worth the money if you are serious about COM+. And I mean serious! This is not a beginners book, for that I would recommend "Inside COM+ Base Services" by the same publisher. This book is a little too biased towards MS development environments. For example they compare VC++, VB, and VJ++ and casually mention there are "other capable environments". Hmm. Then again, this is a Microsoft press book, and COM+ is a Microsoft technology, so its to be expected.This book picks up where introductory COM books left off. The first chapter is about error handling in your COM+ objects - not a good place to start learning COM :)Particularly useful to me was the last third of the book, the design patterns. Here, the authors give us a meaty example of a "real world" COM+ enterprise solution. What other book gives you this? Answer: none. Get this book!

This book, is without a dought, the best COM book ever done. In my seven years as a working COM engineer and some say expert, I have read and bought every single book on COM. And when you come right down to it, even Don Box's book, they are all the same: explaining IUnknown over and over again, rehashes of available documentation and books with esoteric and useless ICat and IDog interfaces. None of them deal with the real COM world and the problems we really face every day. This book does. This book assumes you are a working COM developer and focuses on the hard problems: Smart Pointers, Strings, Enumeration Interfaces, Streaming and trying to deal with the world of STL. It offers real solutions and real code that can be used today to bridge to the STL world and to deal with things like enumerations. It offers code to deal with COM enumerations and collections, a topic scarcely covered. This book has become my number one resource.

An excellent book. The early chapters reveal solid solutions to oft-encountered COM problems - error handling, string manipulation, smart pointers, multiple-reader single-writer locks, streaming and marshal-by-value etc. The later chapters concentrate mainly on design techniques for building scalable applications. In my (humble) opinion, chapter 13: The MTS Revolution is worth the price of the book alone. This chapter describes the evolution of technologies for building scalable systems, introduces the single-concurrent-client model and explains how to write scalable systems keeping code maintainable and in the general case, lock-free. All would-be COM+/MTS developers should read this chapter! I've read both this and Tim Ewald's Transactional COM+ - both excellent books and compliment each other very well. In my opinion, Brown's chapter 13 is far superior to Ewald's chapter 1. Both attempt to acheive the same thing, coaxing the regular developer into the COM+ mindset, but Brown's offers logical facts and reasoning as opposed to Ewald's non-real-world convoluted IPerson examples.

Very good book, explains real-worlds issues one faces when developing COM components.A few first chapters are extremely useful (something I had to learn hard-way. Have I had this book, I would have saved myself many hours restructuring my projects). Basic ATL types are also explained and recommendations given are very good.Concise but very useful is explanation of BSTR, OLESTR, CComBSTR, _bstr_t types.

Not only the author knows COM+ in detail, he also knows how to express the ideas very well. The book covers enough details of all the aspects of COM+. The examples are easy to understand. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning this subject.

This book goes into great detail and handles the issues that have plagued me all along the path.If I had this book many months ago, I would have clearly saved myself a lot of struggle.This is JUST what I have been searching for.

The graphics in this book are not particularly exciting, but the sentiment is. I bought this as a baby gift for a bilingual couple. Mom speaks English and Spanish and Dad speaks German, English, and Spanish. They were both delighted because they want their child to learn all three languages

There's a girl on YouTube (Jenny) with an entire series on learning German which makes this superfluous if you're and adult.

Cute but simply story, there aren't a lot of bilangual books out there for kids, so I was excited to find this one.

Gifted this for a 2 year old German American boy. The child's German mother told me that she planned on teaching her son both languages so I figured this would be a great book to have for their family. She was very happy to get it
