Like others, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, and honestly, it took a few chapters before I was drawn in. But, I ultimately enjoyed this book for the vivid character development and scene descriptions. I didn't feel as though the author hit me over the head with vegan propaganda, but that could be because I knew that veganism was a major theme. I did appreciate the resources available for those who do want to further explore veganism or vegetarianism. Overall, it's a quick read that makes you think.

Past readers and future readers, please don't let this book skew your view of veganism in literature. This is just a poor representation of literature in general. It is 98% dialogue, 60% of which is more like a monologue (and pages, and pages of monologue). Everything involving the vegan character feels stiff, especially his vegan tirades. As a vegan, I am disappointed in this book because if someone who was not vegan read it, they'll be turned off as it is just word for word PETA propaganda and when a vegan reads it, it is absolutely boring because there is no new information for a vegan. A person isn't reading fiction to be informed, they are reading to be entertained. Educational entertainment needs to be blended together seamlessly through symbolism. Nobody likes a lecture, not even a vegan. The Vampire and the Vegan, however, is very straightforward and plainly, not written very well in general. The vampire lore isn't believable, even within the context of the world, and so many aspects of the tiny plot feel like they were thrown in last minute just to satisfy story need without any consideration for how they fit into the story. For example, the three sentences of the random witch that ended the book. The dilemma that vampire feels for veganism is unbelievable and feels like an author's amateurish fantasy. This is just awful. I was looking forward to reading this because I had hoped it would be comedic and would be a welcome change from vegans being the butt of a joke, but it is just bad all around.

I was born and raised among the famous Maasai cattle herders of East Africa; to us, it goes without saying that: animals are supposed to be our source and providers of meat, milk, leather, ivory, blood etc. This is without regards to the pain and torture that we inflict upon them. Reading the fascinating and mind opening book by Ms. Merlene Alicia Vassall – The Vampire and The Vegan has shown me a different way of looking at this ecosystem. Long story short, I am now seriously considering turning to a Vegan for reasons that are amply but subtly articulated in the book. The book is extremely well written, the plot and character development jell; it is backed by facts which must only have come from the author’s extensive research of the materials and arguments presented. I very highly recommend the book to anyone considering turning vegan, eating healthy or anyone who has borne witness to the cruelty and suffering that we, humans, impose upon animals. Two thumbs up to Ms. Merlene Alicia Vassall on her maiden book. Can’t wait for the sequel!!

I read few fictions, and certainly not impossible stories about vampires. But, as a long time vegan, my attention was drawn first to the title, and then to the beautiful cover. The title, 'The Vampire and the Vegan', is perhaps till now the only novel with the word 'vegan' into the title.I started reading skeptically. In the beginning, I was struggling to get into the story, but that's my fault, as a slow and 'suspicious' reader. The airy layout and the clear typography were of a great help. The novel is well documented and thoughtful structured. In the beginning, the main character, the female vampire, cool and aloof, lives in a big city with superficial encounters and a trendy nightlife. When she (the narrator) learns to know her neighbor in the same building (the vegan), very slowly a relationship develops. Of course it takes a lot of adapting to transform from vampire to vegan, and that tension is described sublimely. Unnoticed, the author elaborates on veganism as a diet (including ingredients and cookery), but, and that I appreciated very much, she also focuses on the ethical aspects of veganism as a lifestyle and cruelty free attitude.I obviously can not give away the plot, but the story evolves from cool to a very exciting and unexpected end. Open-ended, uncertain and intriguing. In other words, a cliff-hanger, leaving us uttermost curious what the second book ('The Vampire and the Vegan : book II : Livestock') will bring ! (available September 2016).

I didn't know what to expect from the title, but the story pulled me in and I ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting! While the book seems intended to get a certain message across, the story is more nuanced. The thoughts and actions of the vegans and vampire were juxtaposed in such a way that enhanced my understanding of veganism without being too preachy. And more than that, it made me consider that being at the top of the food chain comes with great responsibility. I was asking myself: can a vampire who violently feeds on humans change her ways? And can we humans who feed violently on livestock (thanks to widespread factory farming practices) change ours? It left me with some uncomfortable and challenging things to think about. The story is filled with interesting and provocative imagery to keep you entertained, as well. I recommend it!

The Vampire and the Vegan allows all readers to fall into a world that has not been thought of in the past. The fact that the vampire, Pearl, can visualize the animal slaughter while feeding was a place I was not expecting to go. I'm glad I did because it gave me a different take on my diet and on how vampires are viewed in literature. Her relationship with Salaam blossoms throughout the book and Salaam's sensibilities are well played through the author. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a different take on what they already have read about vampires. This book is well written with excellent character development and the story keeps the reader involved to the last page. I look forward to the rest of the series.
