My Summer in a Garden (Modern Library Gardening)

From Library Journal

Modern Library expands its scope into gardening with these two titles. Published in 1981, Perenyi's text offers a collection of essays on topics from annuals to wild flowers and everything in between. The practical information is laced with anecdotes and historical tidbits about gardens and gardeners. Reaching back to 1871, Warner's volume also offers helpful advice along with much humor and even drama as he uses plant life to draw lessons for daily living. A nice break from the straightforward how-to books. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is a scanned copy of a book which is available for less money in a much nicer typeset version from the Modern Library Gardening Series. A friend accidentally bought this one as a gift for me mostly because of a flaw in Amazon's search engine. It arrived with a cover that had a picture of a mountain on it (not an interesting one at that) and a note that pages may be blurred or missing because of the scanning process. I do not appreciate the "publisher" showing so little regard for an author's work (it is in the public domain) as to sloppily scan old pages and slap any old cover on it. The book is also available for free through the Gutenberg project. I have replaced it with the ML one, which is edited by Michael Pollan and includes a nice introduction. Please honor Charles Dudley Warner by purchasing the properly published version of his work. His work was definitely worth reissuing in a lovely edition as is the case with My Summer in a Garden (Modern Library Gardening). I am buying all the books in the series as my tiny budget allows!

I didn't know until I actually had this book in my hands that it was written in the nineteenth century. Those are my favorite reads. I love getting a firsthand account of life in the past.As a flower gardener, I'm always interested in what flowers gardeners grew in the past. Although Charles Dudley Warner writes about his veggie garden, it turns out we have a lot in common. I was delighted to read about the toad in his garden. Oh, how I wish I had one in my garden eating pests! We disagree about birds. Perhaps because he was a veggie gardener and I'm a flower gardener. He considered birds pests because they ate his produce. I like them because they consume pests. He had to deal with some very different "pests" than most gardeners today. At least the ones who garden in my area. We don't have to worry about cows or chickens wandering into our gardens or boys stealing our produce. The biggest difference between then and now was a visit from the President. Try to envision what it would be like to have the President visit your garden. The entourage. The Secret Service. The paparazzi. When the President visited Charles Dudley Warner's garden, he came alone. He toured the garden, enjoyed some liquid refreshment and jokingly offered the job of Head Gardener at the White House to his host. It's anecdotes like that that draw me to books written long ago. I can understand why people say that they hate reading about history. Who wants an endless recitation of dates and wars and empires? It's so much more interesting to read about the every day lives (and gardens) of every day people (and gardeners).

MY SUMMER IN A GARDEN is a slim volume in a series of neglected gardening classics being reprinted by Modern Library, however, to suggest the subject of the book is limited to gardening is to do it a great disservice. In the guise of a week-by-week account of one summer in his garden Charles Dudley Warner waxes philosophical on religion, society, animals, schoolboys, hunters and neighbors as well as plants. Its style will feel familiar to readers of the later literary garden-musings of E.B. White and Elizabeth Von Arnim. Although Warner died in 1900 his language is remarkably fresh and the complaints and joys of gardening familiar. The side comments on women's suffrage only remind one with surprise that in spite of the similarities he was living in a very different time.I found the book when tracking down the following Warner quote, "Regrets are idle; yet history is one long regret. Everything might have turned out so differently!" and in reading the book discovered other gems such as, "Nothing shows one who his friends are, like prosperity and ripe fruit. I had a good friend in the country, whom I almost never visited except in cherry-time. By your fruits you shall know them." It is the gentle humor and subtle wisdom of his observations that elevate Warner's book above the ordinary. Being, at present, a city dweller transplanted from childhood gardens, I found reading the book a great comfort.

This book is one of the loveliest I have ever read; so beautiful in fact that I feel anyone who never has the chance to read it is missing out on something really wonderful. It was written a very, very long time ago by a writer who had a wonderful grasp of the English language and its ability to create magic. The story flowing as smoothly as a skein of silk is told to us in such a rich, descriptive and personal way that I found myself standing there in the garden beside the author as he tended his beloved plants. As for Calvin's tale, being a cat person, I have read many, many stories about these wonderful and beautiful animals but none that left me feeling quite as did this one, again partly because of the author's wonderful skill with words. There is so much to say about cats. Dear Calvin died a long time ago, yet my heart broke as if it were yesterday as his health slowly failed until finally the inevitable occurred. If you like simple, beautifully written true stories, you must read this.

Read the bookNow giving as a giftIntroduction was skipped

Very humorous. Fun to read how gardening has not changed over the years. The same problems, and pleasures, existed then as now. Just a joy to read. The extra story at the end about Calvin the cat was quite a treat.

I bought this book because I wanted a source of information on freezing food. This book has very little information on freezing food although the description would lead you to believe that it contains detailed information. If you need to know about freezing specific foods, buy a different book. Chapter three has a section on what does not freeze well, what to do if your freezer fails and how to thaw food. It does not talk about actually freezing different vegetables or food items.

Disappointed in the freezing section. Not nearly enough specifics. We have a long growing season so freezing is a great option for preservation but the details I needed were not there.

Only had to buy one book for all my food preservation instructions- canning, drying, freezing

Not for beginners

For someone like myself who has NEVER canned, dried, or done anything to preserve food before, this seemed a little too general. I would have preferred more detailed instructions. For example, which foods dry well and which don't? How long do certain foods take to dehydrate? How long to process foods in a non-pressure canner? Exact instructions for smoking and drying fish??? Overall, tells you about the different techniques but lacks enough detail (other than the specific canning recipes) for those of us that want to be held by the hand and guided.

This book is okay, it does visit several topics in food preservation but does not go deep enough in those topics. I have found some good recipes and alternate preservation ideas to research further.

Very well written Lots of good tips.

It did not go into what I was looking for. I needed to get information on freeze drying food at home. I know they now have the units to be able to book that but I wanted to get some info on it before I spent all that money.

Seven years after their 'deaths', Gale Asher (reporter) and Ripley Gaines (archaeologist) are being hunted down with a vengeance. A clue surfaces that Taz (one of the Foundation members) believes is viable enough to launch the beginning of a relentless search. In the blurb for this book, it says that the 5 Cosega mysteries must be solved, stop the final Divinations and their daughter, Cira, must be saved. So, the global adventure begins with stops in Fiji, Hawaii, El Perdido (off coast of Central America), NSA HQ in Maryland and Mexico - to name some of the stops along the way. 'Ex Spheriences' are indeed apparent as Gale mentions early in the book. I would like to add there are 'In Spheriencies' and 'Mid Spheriences' as well. The reader must think about the massive amount of technology included, Two examples are the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Eysen Anomaly Matter Interference (EAMI). The imagery is truly amazing and I am still thinking about the city of lights which to me is fascinating, as well. The writing style of this author is flawless and flows smoothly from the beginning to the end. The characters are well developed, action is intense and the plot is undeniably rich with a superlative ending. I don't very often think about a book when I have finished reading it. This one I finished a couple of days ago and it is still floating through my head. All in all, just an excellent book and one which I would most highly recommend to others. Mysteries, action, adventure with the dimension of time tossed in for that added extra item! Most highly recommended.

One might control the future … that is if they can command the past. Time may just be a curious entity, at least it seems that way for Rip and Gale; deceased already for 7 years. At any rate it’s going too fast for them. With many hunting them, they need to modify the impending by solving the previous, as well as enduring the here-and-now, and all within 3 days. Involved in this, is finding the Cosegans, confined in the Eysen-Sphere, and add to that; they need to crack five Cosega secrecies, halt the last Divinations, and rescue their daughter. This is the third book I have read by Brandt Legg, and I have enjoyed it greatly, just like the other two, “Outview’ and “Cosega Search”. “Cosega Sphere” is fast pasted, action filled, and the characters are up to date and realistic. If you love Sci-Fi novels with intensity and depth, then make sure you buy this fun read. It will wisk you away to another world and time.

Cosega Sphere (The Cosega Sequence Book 4) by Author Brandt LeggAuthor Brandt Legg is one great author! I am hooked on his style of writing and look forward to more of his compelling and suspenseful books in the future.I very much enjoyed the Cosega Sequence. I read all four books one after the other and I am sorry to discover that Cosega Sphere is the last book in this series. I don't want the saga to end. The "good guys" are extremely likable and although the genre is Science Fiction, there are many facets of the plot that ring true as far as what the world is like today. The frightening threat of WWIII is one such possibility. If only, we could learn from our past, we may very well be able to alter the future. The Eysen holds the key to doing just that but the powers that be must utilize the necessary brain power to prevent the destruction of the human race. Now Rip Gaines learns that there is more than one Eysen. Savina, who works for the enemy has one in her possession. Can they work in tandem along with the top scientists in the world to find a solution? Will Crying Man be able to help?Inspirational Author ~ Dolores AyotteI'm Not Perfect and It's Okay: Thirteen Steps to a Happier Self

COSEGA SPHERE (volume 4) picks up seven years after COSEGA SHIFT (volume 3) left off, and from here it takes time for a spin. One idea is the different progression of time for different characters: “You found us in your past, but our past is your future.” The characters work tirelessly, even under dangerous conditions, to figure out the five Cosega mysteries: what is the Sphere, who were the Cosegans, where did they come from, why did they leave the sphere, and what happened to them. When spheres clash, they work to return them to their pre-merging state. They wish to “bend the future into something survivable, maybe even something good.”Some of these ‘time-shifts’ are inspired, perhaps, by the author’s observation on his own life (at the end of the book) noting that, “This year, time stopped… and began again.” Perhaps time, as depicted in the story—“The future is a fragile place”—obtained its intensity from personal trials, as art mirrors life.I love the prophetic vision, the hope to create a place where, ”we live together… as citizens of earth, as creators of reality,” acting towards the possibilities they can achieve, even the impossible.Five stars.

Brandt Legg is an insightful and great techno-thriller author. Right up there with Issac Isamov. All 4 of the Cosega Sequence books make you feel like it's something that could actually happen given the world news of today. Reading the last Librarian now (a continuation of the Cosega Sequence) and it's just as thrilling.

A great what if story. A lot of scenes were reminiscent of the old Flash Gordon movies where Flash was certain too die but something would save him in the end every time. The chase went on through 4 books. The final book overlooked one obvious answer to the whole problem that started in that volume. It might have seemed like a cop out, but I would have been satisfied with it if had been done right.Still, this is a really fun story that is engaging to read. All the characters are likable and hateable, I really kept me turning the pages!

I've read all 4 Cosega books, all were great reads. Lots of SF suspense with many eventful sequences. This being book 4 brings an unexpected end but very fitting. The author is to be commended, his story telling is excellent. I will continue to read his books till I read them all!

Its comprehensive and integrated presentation of language design and implementation illustrates and explains admirably the many deep and profitable connections among these fields." ―Jim Larus, Microsoft Research"This book is the best and most complete on this topic that I've seen."  ―Klaus Ostermann, Darmstadt University of Technology

great book if you are taking courses on programming language and compilers courses. I bought this book for my course because it was recommended by my Professor, but I will be keeping it even after the completion of the course. I got the ebook version. Too good!

I would highly recommend this book for the seasoned developer. The author has a dry sense of humor in writing (to this very dry topic), and much of the language is lost if the reader does not have a solid foundation in programming languages; which I did not. When purchased, I started to read, and immediately thought my new career move should be abandoned. However, after purchasing books that are at the beginner level, I am thoroughly enjoying Scott's book, as with each reading, I 'get" more of what he is writing about.Even beginners should buy this book. Put it in clear view on the bookshelf, and work towards it.

If you don’t know how programming languages work, I would say this is your book. It contains plenty of examples in different languages. It explains the trade-offs and internals in a very accessible language. The way to explain the different compiler stages and features is very natural. If you are looking for a concrete topic it is in the book.On the other hand, the book contains complementary stuff in a CD. Along the book some topics are covered in digital content only. One extreme case is the last chapter “Code Improvement”, it is digital entirely. It would be great if all chapters had a minimal ‘core’ of content. By the way, the bibliography would be more useful in digital format only.Great book on programming languages!

Overall, "Programming Language Pragmatics" (PLP) is a very good book. According to the Preface:"It aims, quite simply, to be the most comprehensive and accurate languages text available, in a style that is engaging and accessible to the typical undergraduate....At its core, PLP is a book about how programming languages work. Rather than enumerate the details of many different languages, it focuses on concepts that underlie all the languages the student is likely to encounter, illustrating those concepts with a variety of concrete examples, and exploring the tradeoffs that explain why different languages were designed in different ways."I'm not knowledgeable enough to pass judgment on "the most comprehensive and accurate" part. But, I'm pretty happy about the book meeting the rest of those goals. I read through the book on my own and have only a few significant gripes:- Chapters 2 (Programming Language Syntax) and 4 (Semantic Analysis) are tough to get through. They're basically trying to teach enough about Alphabets, Languages, Regular Expressions, Context-Free Grammars, Finite Automata and Push-Down Automata for the reader to understand what the rest of the book is based on. I've read Cohen's Introduction to Computer Theory, which is dedicated solely to this material and I still had some trouble. With an instructor in a class to walk through the things, it should be doable. But, for a person reading the book on his own, ugh.- All of Section III: Alternative Programming Models, seems to depart from the format of the rest of the book (as noted in the Preface) where the author talks about the concepts and then how the different languages implement them. Instead, he focuses on the languages themselves and almost seems to be trying to cram a primer into his text. Since the section seems to be a special case, it wouldn't be so bad except that the languages covered are a bit out of the mainstream and so that degree of depth gets pretty unreadable at times. Again, with a professor around, things would be better.- At a more pedagogical level, the author has a tendency to merely explain what his example Figures are doing in general terms. The problem is that a lot of the code/pseudocode involves fairly advanced structures in several languages (many of which most people won't have run across). It would have made things a lot easier if he had walked his way through each of those Figures line-by-line and explained what each line did. Once again, this wouldn't be that much of a problem in a normal teaching environment since a professor could do it.Other than those three things, this is a very good and readable book. I rate it at four stars out of five.

Over the years the Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools (2nd Edition) (also knwon as the dragon book) has become the de facto standard for introducing compilers and related topics at universities. This is very unfortunate because "Programming Language Pragmatics" is in a completely different league and should be the one used instead. It gives the student (or the self taught) a complete and through overview of parsing, grammar, automata theory and other key language constructs. What really differentiates this book from others (and most notably the (in)famous "Dragon Book") is that it does so in a easy to understand manner and with lots of well written examples. Many people find compiler and language theory to be dark magic, and it would be wrong not to acknowledge that these subjects are considerably harder than say creating a web page in PHP or writing a small Java/C# program. But much of the confusion also stems from the long history of porly written books which all have lacked explaining key areas or assumed that the readers just know some obscure CS topics beforehand. This book does not travel down that road, it is well written, contains both simple and advanced examples and is simply a delightful read.

Programming Language Pragmatics seems to be held in fairly high regard among those in computer science. Though I can't fathom why and I struggle to understand who the book is for. This text seems to assume prior knowledge in automata theory, compiler design, and formal language theory which, if you are using this book for an undergraduate programming languages class, is not very likely. Programming Language Pragmatics contains walls of text that, despite being incredibly dense, don't communicate concepts effectively. It has some interesting insights into the philosophies and design decisions behind programming languages but it is marred by poor organization and lack of clarity. If this is a required text, I'd wait to find out if your teacher actually assigns homework out of it before buying this monstrosity.

About as thorough a survey of programming languages and their design challenges/decisions as I could imagine. However, conspicuously omits some of the newer languages from much of its discussion, so -1 star.

Review

“Hogan and Taylor, editors of the Adams Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society, have given history buffs a treat―the most comprehensive edition of letters between two extremely lively writers, America's second president and his wife. This edition contains 289 letters covering a longer period of time than the two earlier editions of selected letters. Here are trenchant political exchanges, such as Abigail's famous plea to her husband and the Continental Congress to "Remember the Ladies," and Adams's less famous, revealing reply: he noted that while it was well known that the Revolution had prompted children, slaves and apprentices to rebel, "your Letter was the first Intimation that another Tribe more numerous and powerfull than all the rest were grown discontented. Many of the letters are personal, from coquettish courtship epistles to Abigail's moving premonition that the baby she was carrying would be stillborn. The letters shine a light on such aspects of daily life as illness, Sunday sermons and cuisine. Ellis's ... foreword explains the rarity of such intimate correspondence―Martha Washington, for instance, destroyed most of the letters she and George wrote. Readers will agree that this book is a treasure.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Both Abigail and John Adams decried long separations during their marriage (while acknowledging them as necessary for the greater public good), but the unintended legacy of such trials were the thoughtful, loving, and literate letters exchanged by the couple that open a window on the birth and early years of our republic ... This is a treasure, for general readers and scholars alike.”―Michele Leber, Booklist“[The letters] provide valuable insights into the early days of partisan politics...The Adamses' correspondence gives modern Americans an extraordinarily personal view of our country's founding. Intermingled with comments on the great events of the day―the Battle of Bunker Hill, the vote for independence, the inauguration of Washington as president―are discussions of daily life, stories of neighbors and relatives, complaints about the high cost of living and laments over such family tragedies as a stillborn daughter and the deaths of parents. Their courtship letters are especially delightful.”―Mary Beth Norton, New York Times Book Review“Their loving partnership in service to our country is a remarkable story and one that merits retelling over and over again.”―Senator Ted Kennedy, as quoted in the Boston Globe“My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John Adams is an extraordinary set of 289 of their personal letters...There are many books on these two that provide context and background; this one, in which John and Abigail's voices soar unencumbered over the pages, is a lovely addition to the Adams shelf. You can't help but feel a little guilty reading these rich exchanges, since they were borne of long separations, with mail delivery that was slow at best, and during wartime, unreliable. Even the act of writing could be difficult: in one letter, Abigail talks about a winter so cold, the ink freezes in her pen...While they are apart, they endure the deaths of parents, friends, and, most heartbreaking, an infant daughter. Their elegiac letters carry an almost unbearable beauty.”―Carol Iaciofano, Boston Globe“Because John Adams's work as a critical player in the War of Independence frequently took him away from home, his correspondence with Abigail (some 1,160 letters between them have survived) provides a wonderfully vivid account of the momentous era they lived through, underscoring the chaotic, often improvisatory circumstances that attended the birth of the fledgling nation and the hardships of daily life―from smallpox to wartime shortages―in that "Age of Tryal."”―Michiko Kakutani, New York Times“The letters reveal the making of the American nation, in all its chaos and passion, from the inside...Both John and Abigail's letters are packed with evocative details that throw the reader into the epicenter of American revolutionary life. They recount the developments that led to the Declaration of Independence and the emergence of opposing political parties, the Federalists and Republicans. But, equally fascinating, they open a window on to a private world...My Dearest Friend deserves a special place in the literary canon of the founding fathers, not only for recording the amazing relationship between John and Abigail, but also because of the rarity of the survival of such a correspondence...The Adamses' letters are so enjoyable because they offer a wonderful breadth of topics, breathlessly jumping between flirtatious teasing, gossip about friends and family, and philosophical and political argument.”―Andrea Wulf, The Guardian“This new edition of the John and Abigail Adams letters, including some never before published, refreshes what many observers consider the paradigmatic correspondence in American history. It also showed Abigail Adams as a woman of prodigious talents and shrewd insights on matters small and large.”―Robert Birnbaum, The Morning News“John and Abigail Adams wrote to each other throughout separations caused by war and presidential duties. This comprehensive collection of their letters shows them to be affectionate, playful at times, concerned about both national and personal matters, and literate...The letters provide a unique perspective on people and events and allow us to appreciate the great sacrifice they made in service to the country.”―Susan Olasky, World“An extraordinary series of letters...Most 18th Century letters make for dry reading. Abigail and John's are entirely different. They pour their hearts onto the page, expressing their raw feelings as flesh-and-blood humans, not the marble statues we associate with the Founders...The letters are priceless historic artifacts, not only for what they say about these two people, and about the world-changing events in which they played a role, but also because of the way they transport us back to the time...The letters are much more than rich veins to be mined with an historian's pickaxe. They are fun reading, bubbling with the charm, intelligence and passion of these two, who were both compelling and entertaining writers.”―Edward Achorn, Providence Journal

As an American History Teacher, I thought I knew pretty much about our Second President.Reading this book has changed my understanding of what it was like to be a Founding Father! Not only are we witnessing one of the greatest love stories of the American Revolution and the formation of the United States, but as I read, I watched history, people and dates unfold before my eyes. As an admirer of Thomas Jefferson, it brought chills to me as John mentions his first conversation with Mr. Jefferson. This book pulls the reader in and never lets go! Abigail Adams says to her husband to "remember the ladies," and John's response is a mere sentence about laughter.... Such understanding between two people... such depth and wisdom from a man who worked tirelessly not only to shape this nation, but to remain anchored to his wife and children at a time when he'd spent more time away from them than with.

Should be required reading for all American History buffs. You will be amazed at the intelligence and vibrancy of our founding fathers/mothers. They are both good writers and their writing quality and the insights it contains increases over the years. Reading through these letters also gives an interesting view of how "American English" has evolved. This book will bring you to tears of both sadness and joy as you slowly realize what huge sacrifices and dangers these real people faced in inventing America day to day by the seat of their pants. Live through Bunker Hill and smallpox and surviving on potatoes and outsmarting the British with plenty of details. A hidden gem.

Gives great insight into one of the most storied relationships of the US founding. It's fascinating being privy to the correspondence between these two.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The editor compiled the letters so that the story of their life flows smoothly. When letters are missing or the story seems to jump, the editor adds helpful historical notes. Apart from the excellent work of the editor, this is a true American love story. The depth of John and Abigail's friendship and love is apparent in every letter. You might need a box of tissue because parts of their story are tremendously sad (but I won't give away which parts). This collection of letters is engaging on a personal and emotional level, but also highly valuable for its historicity. These letters demonstrate a reality of our history that doesn't get taught in school. This is a must read for anyone interested in U.S. history, anyone interested in biography, and anyone interested in pure and honest love.

This book is a wonderful adjunct to the HBO series and David Mc Cullough's brilliant book.."John Adams". I have never been devoted to our American history, preferring instead Ancient cultures. I see what I have missed and vow to read more about the brave and devoted men and women who, indeed ,created our country. The love affair between John and Abigail seemed to provide the great man, as well as Thomas Jefferson, with the strength and comfort that spurred them on. Bravo!!

Our bookclub chose this book just about the same time that the John Adams Movie for TV came out. It could not have been at a better time. We got to know one of our founding fathers and his wife who was such a strong woman and the obvious love of his life. The reading was a bit difficult because it was all about their letters to one another written during that time period. But it was a great read. NancyHorse Sense: A whimsical desktop guide to horse care

** page 186 - "About an hour ago I received a Letter from you beginning in this manner - 'My Dearest Friend'. That one single expression dwelt upon my mind and playd about my Heart.." (Abigail Adams)***The union between Abigail and John Adams was one that all marriages are meant to accomplish, yet very few actually do. They were matched; as Life's partners, lovers, friends and equals in all areas of importance, including the politics of the day, politics and movements so immense that it was a miracle their marriage could survive it at all, much less thrive on the danger and anxiety inherent with their time. Abigail was of an intelligence par with her husband, they could converse with each other - no doubt that was the unshakable bond beyond all else between them; and these wonderful historical documents are proof without doubt of what happened in the turbulent times before, during and after the Revolution. Their pen was a weapon against adversity, a way of finding comfort and support in any situation.Abigail, in my view, must be considered one of the first women (along with Mercy Otis) with enough courage to speak up about women's rights, and she had the right partner to speak up to because he chose to listen carefully if not entirely - the times not being ripe as yet for such a radical idea. John Adams brushed some of it off tongue-in-cheek as he responded to her statements about education and other essential human rights for women, but it is clear that he valued her opinions and could not deny the truth behind her thoughts. She could not vote, and I imagine such a forbearance rankled in the psyche of such a remarkable woman. and he probably, at one time or another thought: "Rats. One more vote might have done it for me." In fact, her remark to him "Do not forget the ladies" didn't bear fruit until decades later; slaves were given the right to vote 50 years before women were given that same right. They were there for each other, if only by letters for most of the time during the early years when the important work of the Revolution must take preference over the home ground for John; when Abigail's duty, as she saw it, was to keep the home front in an even condition because that was the job description the Revolution assigned to her. Staunch patriots both, there was little whining on either side, yearning and loneliness was the only emotion divulged in their long-distance love and life affair, and it was also plain that they knew their letters would one day become part of the historical record that John once asked Thomas Jefferson: "Who will write of it? Who can write of it?" Perhaps some of the critical elements of it will never be known, but it would seem that these three made a very good accounting of it as amateur historians. All one has to do to stop complaining about the trials of their own present-day lives, is stop and read of the hardships thrust upon people by something being done for posterity, and the unselfish grit they demonstrated. Thinking of my own children as Abigail, in an incredible leap of faith, took all of hers to have them vaccinated for smallpox when the new vaccine might well have killed them too. When thinking of the choice she had to make in something as simple as what we take for granted now - vaccine against dread disease for loved ones - it is easy to see the sacrifices these people of the forefathers made for the rest of us. They wanted a new beginnings for a new nation, a fairer government, and they were willing to die to make it a reality for posterity. All of this was apparent in their letters to one another. For people with an interest in the American Revolution, and the actual accountings of the people living it at the time, this book, along with "The Adams-Jefferson Letters" is priceless reading.Other highly recommended American Revolution reading:** "Miracle at Philadelphia" by Catherine Drinker Bowen** "Patriots - the men who started the American Revolution - by A.J. Langguth** "Defiance of the Patriots" by Benjamin L. Carp** "Three men of Boston" by John r. galvin** "Jefferson" by Thomas Jefferson (Library of America)** "Paul Revere's Ride" by David Hackett Fischer** "American Colonies" by Alan Taylor** "The First American" (Franklin) by H.W. Brands (Library of America)** "1776" by David McCullough** "John Adams" by David McCullough** "Orators of the American Revolution" by Elias Lyman Magoon** American Speeches" Political Oratory (Library of America) Nothing boring between these pages - the bravest and brightest intellects of our nation were available and hard at work speaking the minds of the rest of us - so that we might understand ourselves.

I love this collection of letters between John and Abigail Adams. You become acquainted with them as you read, and then you can "hear" their voices saying the words! You come away with a respect for these two people as individuals, partners, and founders of our country.
